First off, and without becoming too loquacious let me say that I truly value and appreciate those with sage advice and those that stay on topic. I understand that there are many with passionate opinions about their beloved firearms and I hope to become as fervent about my new purchase.

My question then is this: I am in the market for a new semi-pistol. I am debating between the Springfield XD and the Berretta Px4 Storm in either .40 cal or 9mm (so I can throw 2000 rounds downrange and not spend $400 in ammo(exxageration) ).

So far as I can tell, the Beretta is a fairly new weapon and looks very promising, however since it IS so new, there have been little to no field testings in the real world environment. I am curious to hear from any who own one, either as a duty weapon or simply as a new 'toy'. Likewise with regards to anyone having experience w/ the XD.

I HAVE considered Glocks (for all those fans who are fuming right now... :D ) but don't have them in the final running at the present. I am a large framed guy (stocky, Neandrathalistic and solid) however I have small fingers and have trouble wrapping around most full sized grips. I think that the interchangeable backstraps would be most advantageous.

As a side note, while I AM aspiring to get into the District Attorney's office as a county prosecutor, I am at present still a struggling college student paying his way through graduate/law school. Money is not the most important factor, (I'd rather have a good gun than a cheap paperweight) although it IS a consideration and may ultimatly influence my choices.

Thank you all in advance for your expertise and knowledge. I truly value your time and opinions.

PS. This is my first thread and post on Officer.com and I hope that I have posted something that will generate a lively and productive discussion.

So much for staying on-topic...

Get a Glock 19, works good, and easy to take care of, lasts forever, fits good in small hands (which have no relation to anything else, I swear), and it's a decent price.

You should just go to a range that rents guns and try a bunch. Go with what you like.

I don't care for either model, but do have a preferance for the Springfield brand.

Whichever one you get I'd recommend the 9mm version as it is much cheaper to shoot than the 40 cal.

I know how tight $$ can be, so if this is for carry, seriously consider a good .357 magnum revolver.

I used one when I was in law school; a S&W 640. 5 shots, a bit heavy, but absolutely sweet.

Also look at S&W 3913's.

I would also choose the Springfield. Reason is because while I own 2 Berettas myself, I have heard huge praise for the Springfield XD guns. I too think that the Beretta is a little too new to be considered extremely reliable and cost-effective.
