Will joining the Air National Guard as Security Forces better my chances of being hired by the THP? Right now I am employed by my Sheriff's department as a certified dispatcher, certified 911 dispatcher, and certified corrections officer. Also our new Sheriff is a retried Trooper he had 33 years of service. Thanks in advance. What I am asking is would my job right now better me off or joining the ANG under Security Forces. Also here in a few months I will prolly end up becoming a Deputy or City Policeman, and go through the Police Academy.

I would think IMO being in Law Enforcement would help more than quitting LE and joinging the military to try and get back into a certain LE agency. What if THP doesn't hire you for wahtever reason???Get what training you can in LE,especially a academy and then see what happens with THP.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I am only 19 so I still have 2 years to go before I can even apply to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. My Sheriff the retired State Trooper told me I made the right decision and was lucky to get into Law Enforcement at such a young age. He said you usually don't see many 18 year old's in law enforcement, and that he would help me get accepted to the Trooper Academy whenever I get 21. I have never been pulled over, never been in trouble and he said as long as I keep that up, I have a really great shot to become a Tennessee State Trooper whenever I get 21. What does everyone else think?

Furthering your education will increase your chances of getting hired with any agency. Keep that in mind.

I have been around a lot of Troopers in my area and it really comes down to what kind of patrol you want to do. Troopers mainly stay on the interstates and run some interdiction and traffic patrol. ALOT of 45's and 46's even in the county. If you are more into answering calls and hanging out in drug areas then you need to stay with the Sheriff's department. Troopers are highly trained professionals and I respect them a lot as I have work with them on traffic stops but in our neck of the woods they do not get to answer the day to day calls like a sheriff department. Some calls are BS like animals barking and then some are hair raising just hearing it across the radio ( as you probably know) so think it over and see what excites you most, either wouold be a great choice. Police work is the greatest job around. :D
