My name is Gabe. I'm a Law Enforcement major at Vincennes University in Vincennes, IN. I was wondering what the hiring process of a county is in the state of Oklahoma and the requirements to be a deputy. I was also wondering if anyone has any cotacts to anyone in the Cherokee County department.
Thanks,
Lefty

Why not stay in your home state or maybe go up to Chicago
I have never been to Oklahoma, but I hear the people are pretty uncivilized and the schools are terrible. I would not want to raise a family there

GuitarCop, you related to Charles Barkley?
Quite funny you say that you "hear" and take it as a fact. Most people in Oklahoma are FAR more civilzed than any others I have met.
Oklahoma is a great place to raise a family. Unfortunately, it is not so easy on an Oklahoma Police Officer's pay.

i went to the academy with 3 guys from cherokee county and a guy who worked a small town in cherokee county. if your really considering living in that area i would look at muskogee p.d. they do not require a degree and gladly hire new officers. they got their pay up pretty good as well. its only like 24k for one year while you complete trainging and probation period but then its goes to somewhere in the mid 30k a year and climbs each year. i assure you thats the best salary youll find in that area. a lot of county's will not hire guys just walking in. people call it the good ole boy system but most sheriff's put a completely new guy in the jail working for a while and then see if they are the kind of guy they can use. i didnt check your profile to see if your already a certified officer but some states academy's will lateral into oklahoma cert. after you sit through a legal class. what made you decide on cherokee county.

watch out HCSO511, next thing you know, Guitar Jerk will be bagging on the Freemason building in Guthrie as the source of all that is evil..
Oklahoma isnt the deep south but it can be close at times, when i go to SE OK, i can close my eyes and imagine being in Alabama pretty easily.
Ok is a fine state to raise your family, MOST kids are still taught to be respectful, and the cost of living is low...so is the average income tho.
The biggest complaint is the lack of anything to do, however this is changing, at least in Tulsa or OKC area.

its really changing all over. i-40 seems to be a border. south of there gets a little backward but the northern part of the state isnt much different from anywhere else. noone is chasing indians or having gun fights anymore. i cant believe people see television and think thats what happens down here.

oh ive heard all that crap. had a guy on yahoo ask me if tumble weeds really blow around everywhere. if we had to fight indians all the time. this is rediculous as thinking alaska is all ice and eskimos and everyone living in igloo's.

Cherokee county is not set in stone. My girlfriend an I would like somewhere close to Tulsa so she can finish her residency as an optomitrist. As for my college degree I will have two years in after this year but not sure if I wil get my degree on time. As of right now I want to make contacts and may be try to get my foot through the door to get a little jump start. Any suggestions and advice would be very helpful.

well cherokee county is a pretty good drive from tulsa. not insane but further than id want to drive every day. tulsa county is looking for deputy's something feirce. they are even waving college for certified deputies. tulsa p.d. wants a 4 year degree. wagoner osage creek oklmulgee and rogers county all border tulsa county. osage is the only one i'm familiar with and they wont hire uncertified for the street. the others may but i have no clue. last time i checked creek county they only hired certified.
tulsa county would be worth checking. i dont know if they will put you on the road uncertified but they will send you to the academy. bigg dogg will be more familiar with their policies but they may have changed since he was working there. in oklahoma one degree is as good as the other. im sure out of 10 applicants your degree would look better being l.e. based. the main thing here is cleet. especially to the sheriff's office's. and its getting harder and harder to get someone to send you too the academy. good luck and keep me posted. if i can do anything to help you out let me know.

Haha Ive been to....or should I say through.....Keota. In fact I remember seeing an officers house than lived in town there. Someone set his car on fire if I remember right. One of those aggressive new guys in the middle of the war on meth. I guess the methheads didnt like him doing his job. Seemed like a real good officer.

Yup thats the guy. His big trashcan next to where the car was parked looked like a huge frisbee when it melted.
