View Full Version : Do ST. louis Dept's hire recruits to go to adacamy??
I havn't been able to get any concrete answers to this. Some say they will, some say theres no way. The county website lists an opening for commisioned officers, however when you read the description it does give details about recruit hires and their pay rate, etc. But, there is only the application for the open enrollment recruit which just pays for the academy if you are accepted. Im currently in MI and am originally from St. L. I am trying to relocate my family back however i cannot afford to not work for 6 months. I wonder how some of these guys can pay there bills while going to the academy. I know that the city police will hire cadets, but my house is in creve coure, not within residential limits.
Any ideas??

St. Louis City will hire you to go thru their acadamy. They are pretty good pay wise from the recruit standpoint. That is where I got my start, then I went out to a muni in the county. Unfortunatly I got called up for my military service so I've been gone for a while...but I am hoping when I get back into it again.
trafficcmdr,
How long did you work for the city for, how lond did you have to live in the city?? the problem with the city dept. is that my house im moving to is in creve coeur. Obviously not within city limits. As far as the county academy, the only application i can see on their website is for the open enrollment. I have a fulltime job, with benefits, a wife and a 3 month old son. I currently am a juvenile corrections officer in MI, I would like to get into the adult system. But how are these cadets paying their bills for 6 months while they are in the academy?? Are they all living off credit cards, inheritances, spouses or what??

Yes, they pay you while you go through their academy. I also emailed someone in their personel/recruiting dept. a few weeks ago, who told me that anyone with a Missouri Class A Post license does not have to attend the Stl. Academy.

Juvie, sorry that it took so long to get back to you. Yes I did have to live in stl city in order to work for the city. However (correct me if I am wrong) I have heard thru the grapevine that after a certain ammount of time you can live in the county.
As far as police recruits who sponser themselves through the acadamy, its hard to say how they make their living. I know that there are several acadamies in the st. louis region that offer part time acadamy, where you don't spend 6 mts of training..instead it is boken up to last aprox. 1 year.

Last I talked anyone over on that side of the state, they were fighting the same Kansas City was fighting with...
If you work for the city, you must live in the city......no exceptions.
I have heard that STL is like KC.....they actively send out folks every so often to make sure you are living where you say you are at......
I do know that STL had been fighting it (so is KC) but nothing has happened thus far.....

Well, as far as the open enrollment, which I am going through. I've been told that most departments do their recruiting within the first few weeks of academy based on test scores. As of right now, I'm sceduled for the PAT next. I too am worried about money, however I have family that is wanting to help with the financial aspect. I was also told, that the academy is so strenuous that a part time evening job would be prohibitive.

New rule is 7 years in the city, I think, before you can move out. St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and a bunch of others will hire you and send you through the academy...it's all timing and budget related (and if you know anybody). Some of the munis will only hire retreads (i.e laterals) and some will hire both retreads and new recruits. You need to watch the St. Louis Post Dispatch Classifieds daily for police job openings. If you live in Michigan, look it up at www.stltoday.com . If you get hired by the City, you will have to move into the city in 60-90 days after starting the academy. Some of my best times were working as a city cop!!!! City has a lot of issues, but you can't beat the warzone-like experience! Probably St. Louis County PD - 1st Precinct (North County) comes close.
I noticed Florissant, MO, PD just had an ad for folks with at least 64 college credits or 2 years military. Of course, when I left the St. Louis area a few years ago, FPD had a bear of a shift schedule!
Good luck.
i am scheduled for the written test in nov. Just looking for any help that i can get?

You wont have a problem, just look and act sharp. The written test should not be bad. They used to send out a study guide as well, which is close to the actual test.
