A Broward Sheriff's deputy shot a Davie man in the leg Saturday afternoon after he got out of his vehicle during a traffic stop with bloodied wrists, waving a handgun and telling the deputy to shoot or be shot, authorities said.

Alonso De la Puente, 22, of Davie, is in stable condition at North Broward General Hospital, said Neil Birenbaum, spokesman for the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The deputy, who authorities have not named, spotted De la Puente shortly after 3 p.m. driving erratically on South Pine Island Road in Davie and followed him, Birenbaum said.

After De la Puente "blew through" two red lights, the deputy pulled De la Puente over south of Southwest 30th Street on South Pine Island Road, Birenbaum said.

The deputy approached the 1997 green Nissan Sentra and saw that De la Puente was "naked and bleeding from the wrists and in possession of a handgun," Birenbaum said.

The deputy retreated behind his patrol car. De la Puente got out of his Nissan and moved toward the deputy, Birenbaum said.

"[De la Puente] approached the deputy in a very aggressive fashion, holding up his gun and yelling, 'shoot me or I'll shoot you.'"

The deputy yelled for De la Puente to drop his gun and fired several times, hitting De la Puente once in the upper leg, Birenbaum said.

It's lonely at the top, especially with others always trying to bite at your ankles
