I contacted a known bandit in a known bandit hood the other night. He was named as a suspect in an assault that had occurred about 20 minutes earlier. As soon as I rolled in, I saw him (knew him from mulitple previous contacts). I patted him down, like I always do, and didn't find anything. I know he's a crack dealer but I've never caught him with any weapons before, so apparently I got complacent.
Well, I let go of his hands and he turned around to face me. As he was talking about the assault (which was really a "misunderstanding" you see), he raised his hands up and put them on top of his head, casually. When he did, his shirt raised up and I saw the gun barrel sticking down from his belt line.
I slapped leather so fast he ate gun barrel for a few seconds. I retrieved his gun, handcuffed him, and patted him down again. It turns out he was carrying a Walther PPK look-alike. It was a BB gun, nothing more, but it looked just like the real thing. It even said, "Walther" on the grips. That little ****head almost got shot for his BB gun.
The next day I found out he'd been doing a series of robberies in the area. I don't know if he was using that gun or not, but he got arrested in the act the following day.
Moral of the story: Don't get complacent on your pat-downs, especially if you know the bandit you're patting down.
