I am looking to relocate somewhere in the south, however, not limited to that particular part of the country. I have been with NOPD since 2003 and due to losing my home in Katrina my wife really wants to relocate out of this area. Anyone know any departments hiring with good benefits and a safe place to move a family? Thanks for everyone's help!!!!

I would recommend Nashville. Hey the chief in Nashville was on with NOPD back a few a years ago as well.

I recommend Shreveport/Bossier area. Then again, that's where I consider home, and LOVE it there. I'm sure you've probably thought about it already, but I had to throw it out there. You've never considered LSP? Ultimately, that's where I wanna go! Decent pay, great retirement, and they (to me) have the best job in the world!! Law Enforcement, and in Louisiana... :D OOOORRRRRRR....have you considered LWF? They also have great retirement, and they got some good jobs too. Just figured I'd throw it out there.

As a Shreveport PD retiree and former SPD Recruiter I would advise against it. SPD is, and always has had, severe leadership and morale problems complicated by local politics. The pay is up to over 31000 to start but what you have to go through every day at work is not worth it. The Department is under constant political pressure from the minority community so in every shooting involving a minority suspect the Officer is raked over the coles by both the Department and the press. The community has major race issues that have been brewing for years and sooner ot later it will explode (Being from NO you already know what that is like!)
There are good guys that work there but there is a pretty big attrition rate.
The only good thing about being a municipal Police Officer in Louisiana is the good retirement benefits and Civil Service protection in most larger City PD's.
If I were you and I wanted to stay in Louisiana I would only consider the State Police, other than that I would head to Texas or out west where the pay and benefits are good and they fight over recruiting experienced Police Officers. I hear Florida is also good, and they accept Louisiana POST certification for lateral transfer hiring.
NOPD has a horrible reputation nationally right now and wherever you go your going to need to make it crystal clear that you were not a problem Officer that left their post during the hurricane, or was involved in corruption. I would submit a copy of my personnel file to whichever Agency you apply with so that they know you have nothing to hide.
Good luck, you've been through hell, and you deserve a good future!
Just my .02.

Border Patrol is hiring big time. Last I heard, they were looking to push a few thousand through the academy in the next few years. Even heard rumors of re-opening Charleston, in addition to Artesia. The announcement is on usajobs.opm.gov. Just put Border Patrol in the keyword search and it will pull right up. 37 is the cut-off, unless you have prior federal service.

You just missed a lot of testing for CBP. www.usajobs.gov is a good place to start. 1811 series is criminal investigator - do series searches for 1801, 0083, 1883 and 1895 as well, perhaps something will come up for you. Feel free to pm me if you need any help.
As far as Louisiana is concerned, the only department I would consider would be Bossier City PD, but they may be full up. You may want to check the Dallas metro area - Plano, Denton, McKinney and DART police are good places to start. I was offered jobs with three of the aforementioned departments, but I left nopd in 01. If you are a veteran, the feds will pick you up, just keep applying.
In metro Atlanta, several departments are hiring as well. Keep in mind that just about everywhere you'll have to pass a polygraph for PD work, so you have to have a clean BG. Not insinuating that you don't but there are problem officers in NOLA still...
Good luck!

Border patrol raised their age limit to 40, just a heads up for everyone.
