JOB VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI), an Equal Opportunity Employer, seeks experienced/detail oriented criminal investigators. The per hour salary range for Conservation Officer (CO) 12 is $19.98– 28.44, plus additional benefits and remunerations. This position has multi-county responsibility; frequent statewide travel is a job requirement. As a state certified “peace officer,” environmental CO’s are responsible for conducting complex criminal investigations of violations of state and federal environmental protection laws, as well as the general criminal laws of the state, for the purpose of criminal prosecution. This involves, but is not limited to, interviewing witnesses and suspects; drafting and executing search warrants to gain access to information relative to an investigation; searching for and preserving evidence in a systematic manner; preparing cases for prosecution from interviews and evidence gathered; testifying in legal proceedings and assisting prosecutors in preparing cases for court; and reporting case actions, status, and dispositions. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, providing training and assistance to regulatory staff and local units of government.
As a minimum, the position requires: three years experience as a criminal investigator, possession of either a high school diploma or GED, OR two years experience as a criminal investigator AND a Bachelors Degree in either Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice, Business Administration/Community evelopment, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or a related science curriculum. Applicants possessing related undergraduate degrees are preferred. All applicants
meeting minimum requirements will be considered based on education and experience.
All candidates are required to be certified by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, have a valid Michigan driver’s license, pass a physical and drug test, have and maintain the ability to qualify with and carry an OCI designated firearm, and submit to and pass a thorough and complete background investigation. Residence within 25 miles of the office is required to be maintained. The current vacancy is located at our Kalamazoo District Office.
