How many of you "And be honest now" can honestly say that you might just drink a little too much?. On my two days off I drink pretty much almost a 5th a day "Rum and coke". when I get home after work I drink some too. I know this might be uncomfortable for many of you, but just be honest here, please. Do you guys/gals drink much on your time off?
P.S: Mac, if your out there, I know you don't. :D

IMHO, anyone who drinks that much has a problem.
As for myself, I finished off my bi-annual 12-pack last weekend.

:( Brother, you need to find another hobby and a support group if you're drinking as much as you say.

A fifth is not too much for some people, and one drink is too much for others.
I know some guys who can drink a 5th a day and fuction just fine, and other guys who want to start a fight after only a couple.
Of course, you shouldn't be driving with all that in you

So, you are saying that it is the AMOUT one drinks that determines if they are an alcoholic?
It has always been my understanding that what makes one an alcoholic is whether they continue to drink even when drinking negatively affects their lives
For example
-A guy misses too much work from hangovers, yet he continues to drink
-A guy gets into fights and gets arrested, yet he continues to drink
-A guy cheats on his wife when he is drunk, yet he continues to drink
-A guy can't pay his bills because of drinking, yet he continues to drink
-A guy has alcohol-related health problems, yet he continues to drink
Now if "gruntb11" can go to work and maintain healthy personal relationships and have good health, who are we to call him an alcoholic?

I don't drink too much real alcohol, but I drink a lot of beer. Maybe it's because I'm Irish, or just thirsty.
If you think you're drinking too much, or it's causing you problems (or you're asking here), then you're drinking to much. Don't be afraid to get help.
However, If you don't have a problem with it, you show up for work on time, and you don't kill a car load of nuns I say it's not a problem. (Others will say it's not a problem unless you're using a cell phone).
Sort of related: I heard a study recently that alcoholics who drink coffee have less chance of liver damage and the more coffee they drink lower the risk (and perhaps why I'm still on my first liver).
If I worked in a prison, I'd drink twice as much. I don't know how anybody can do it, you have my respect.

After my divorce I went through a stage where it was definately affecting things. Luckily I had a couple friends who sat my a** down and set me straight. After that I didn't drink for over three years. Now, if I have 2 or 3 beers while watching hockey/football, or at a family gathering thats a heavy drinking night.

You have a very good Employees Assistance Program available to you. Just ask someone from your Psychology dept at Gilmer about the program and they will give you info. You don't need to tell them why either and I wouldn't.

never said it was soley dependant the amout...but drinking a 5th every day will lead the the last on you gave...alcohol related health problems...because if that person trys to stop drinking they will withdraw and detox...

I, too, am a little biased here...but then again I'm an alcoholic.
I was my Department's "Alcohol Guy." Glut is right when he says for some a fifth is no problem and for others two beers is too much. There is no magic number in regards to having a drinking problem vs. alcoholism, saying that if you drink this amount, you qualify.
When I taught the course, I put it this way: It's about attitude vs. results.
The guy who says one day that, "My wife is angry with me over my drinking, my work is suffering, my kids are ******ed at me, the dog won't come near me, I've dented the car too many times, I'm not a 19 year-old Grunt and running loose in Okinawa anymore....perhaps I should lay off, or cut way back, AND DOES SO...may not (and that's a may not) have that bad a problem.
The guy who says all that stuff and then says, "Oh well, pour me another one," is bought and paid for.
When I took the 20 question quiz (compiled by the Johns-Hopkins Med School) and put out by AA, in my drinking days, I had four "yes" answers. Too bad it says you're probably an alcoholic with three. 21 sober, non-drinking years later, the fog has lifted enough, and I see the questions differently to know that I should have answered more than a dozen with yes answers.
There is another test called the CAGE test. It goes like this:
Do you ever feel as though you should Cut down on your drinking?
Do you get Annoyed when people talk to you about your drinking?
Do you ever feel Guilty about your drinking?
Have you ever had an Eye-opener (a drink to fix a hangover), the next day?
Two yes answers indicates a problem which must be dealt with.
BTW, I learned that normal people, never ask themselves wether or not they are alcoholic. I used to have that talk with myself all the time.
As Hack 1095 directed you, I also encourage you to talk with you EAP people. Good things will happen for you, my friend, trust me.

It doesn't effect me in any way shape or form. I don't drink like I use to though. I work and spend time with my kids just like any normal person does. I just love to drink. I have cut down a whole lot lately.

Then my hat is off to you...you're one of the guys who, "gets to drink." I'll stick to iced tea, Diet Mt. Dew and Diet Coke. All the best to you and the family.
If things ever change for you, or for a friend, we're here for you!

FYI, I'm off this week, currently its 0131 hrs, I'm on #9 Bud Light since 1030 hrs. Not my normal, but what the hell. I enjoy a few beers every once in a while especially when I'm on the computer. It keeps me from calling old girl friends lol.
Yep, I'm D.R.U.N.K. ah well, on to my pornography!!!
PS, so far I haven't had any problems getting the beer from the can to my mouth. However, typing is an issue. Its taken me several minutes to type this and spell everything correctly. For some reason the keys appear to be moving. lol, my wife (damn her evil hide) is sitting right behind me playing World of War "Crack" she hasn't a clue. Hope this helps :D

I think it is totally normal to go out on a drinking binge or even stay home and enjoy a case of beer. :) As long as one does not make it a daily routine to be intoxicated, it does not cause problems, and your life can function without alcohol, so what. The last time I was pooped face was at my wedding last January. My unit is having a going away party for me Saturday and you know I will enjoy myself. My wife is the designated driver :D

Had the surgery myself, wasn't drinking a whole lot, but I did have an occasional beer or two. That will stop you from drinking, the surgery is good as long as you follow doctors orders. Good luck and hope it all works out.

I only drink when I party. I've got three kids at home. So when I get an opportunity to get a night out, I make the most of it. As a matter of fact, I have a batch of 151 jello shots cooling in the fridge right now... the kids are going away for the weekend! It's gonna hurt on Saturday... maybe Sunday, too.

I found the first year on the job we were partying every set of days off just like college. That being said after 6 years I don't think my body or wife would put up with it. I stil tie one on every once in awhile, but I have a lot of hobbies that keep my busy, that being said golf is not condusive to maintaining any form of sobriety,LOLO. In all seriousness though, if your drinking that much and living a normal lifetstyle, you should probably seek some help because your liver probably needs it.

It has been four years since I had the surgery, I was at 510lbs. and lost down to 189lbs. While I was at my lowest weight I felt sick all the time, so my Docter gave me some meds. that helped put a little weight back on and I now feel like I did while I was in high school.I am now 215lbs.and a34 waist and I will not ever go back to the old me!! I used to wear a size 64 waist!!!

i never, ever, drank.. nor smoked (cigs of course) until i started working at my facility. I wouldnt say i have a problem per se, but job stress has definitely led to bad habits. So i can understand where you are coming from.
