If I were to take the job at KCPD as detention officer us the threat of infectious diseases that great? The sergeant mentioned it and I've just been thinking on that a little bit. I really love police work I just want to narrow my risks down as much as possible.

I know a guy that works as a DEO for KCPD. He's been there 5 years and hasn't had any health issues......
But I am sure they are just warning you to let you know what could happen...

Ok sounds good, appreciate the reply =) Had a friend tell it to me like this... If you're to get the disease / or die, its going to happen no matter where you are or what you're doing. So that also puts it in perspective also =P
Thanks a lot,

Hey everyone how are ya?
I just called the kcpd to find out if they are hiring, and was told the hiring people are not in today. So, does anyone know anything about the dept? Like are they hiring? Are there many spots open? Is it hard to get in? Is it possible to get a night shift patrol position?
Thanks in advance!

They take applications year round and have an academy going through this fall (police officer). I am applying for detention officer with them. It took 6 months for them to send me the letter for an interview. They were busy with other stuff.
As far as getting on.. their standards are pretty low.. check out their website and you can get a list of standards etc.. along with benefits etc.. http://www.kcpd.org/ . Night shift is usually an easy shift to get. The sergeant I interviewed with even told me I'd start with evening or midnight shift. Most people want to switch to days, therefore evening/midnight shift are freebies... in most cases.
At this point however, I'm thinking about just applying for police officer since I'll be 21 in May.
Hope this helps.

Oh and as far as your question about your med school. Honestly, I don't think that will have any adverse affect on your application.

No clue but I just got my letter today for a psych exam with KCPD for detention officer. I'm going to call and see if I can just apply for police officer instead, if not I'll go with the DTO for a while. =)

Lol well dont stress too much over it.. Don't do anything unhealthy.
Detention officers book the prisoners, and hold them there untill they are bailed or what not. They are responsible for watching, guarding, cleaning vomit, etc.. from the prisoners. Whereas the cops just give the prisoners to the detention officers and go on with their patrolling.
For most people detention officer is just a foot in the door to the police side.
Perhaps well see each other at the test date. =)

Well, I talked with employment of KCPD about the police position. Sounds like I'll be better suited to apply with the September test date. Seeing as I won't be 21 until then. So! If you are applying in August, then good luck! If not, then I'll see you in September. =)
