what deptartment would allow ANY officer to wear a uniform and NOT require them to carry a gun... "here, wear this deer outfit and go prancing around the woods for me; ignore the men in camo."

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office Reserve Unit is a community-based cadre of uniformed, trained volunteers. Qualified citizens attend a Reserve Officers Training Academy, and upon graduation join officers on patrol and work special events within the County. Events include: football games, parades, the Dream Cruise, Arts, Beats and Eats.
In addition, the Reserve Deputies assist with Neighborhood Watch events and conduct child fingerprinting programs in the community. I don't know about Oakland County, but several counties in the state allow the Reserve Deputies to conduct Marine Patrols on the area waterways. Most agencies allow fully qualified Reserve Deputies/Officers to carry firearms as long as they are under the supervision of a full-time sworn officer. The Reserve/Marine Officer Academy is typically 17-20 weeks in length, with classes being held one or two nights a week for three or four hours. Schoolcraft College and Oakland Community College usually hold a Reserve/Marine Officer Academy once a year.

Exactly what he said. Id just like to add that alot of things your responsible for. Luckily my department offered alot of things for us but many require you to buy your own uniforms, duty belt, ect. Which can become pricey. If your looking to get into law enforcement or just give back to your community its a great program. Id look into if further and find out what they offer.
As far as departments without firearms ... I know Genesee County and Saginaw City Reserves do not carry.
