Well the Postal OIG just posted a bunch of jobs online. They have finally opened them up to everyone not just Inspection Service employees. Check out their website under employment. Don't know if I can post the website link, so I won't even try but you should know how to get to the USPS website. Look at the bottom of the USPS website and there is a link to USPS OIG. Good luck!!

I am looking into this position, althought the 25,000 pay stinks. Do you work for the Postal Service, if so any info would help. Morale, advancement, training, how often you have to move. Thanks.

Postal OIG SA's attend CITP training and advanced training in Maryland. I have several friends who are SA's with Postal OIG and a vast majority of the cases they handle are adminstrative (i.e. non-criminal). They will be doing more criminal cases, as they are taking on internal crimes that were previously under the Inspection Service.
With the stated qualifications, it looks like they are looking for current 1811's from other agencies, since they have already brought over a large number of Inspectors.
PS- The pay doesn't stink. It is the same as almost all other 1811 Special Agent positions. Remember you get 25% OVER your base pay in LEAP.

The pay is pay banding also, so the vacancy shows the range of the banding. The pay is on par with other 1811s, like others have noted

I belive you're not in a covered (6c) position. As such, a covered position will actually be at a higher pay scale probably. In most cases, they will match your current salary, if within the grade. In simpler terms, take the GS system. There is the regular GS scale and the LE GS scale. In Los Angeles, for example, a GS-5 (step 1) CBP Officer (not on LE scale) is $31,035 while a GS-5 (step 1) Special Agent in Los Angeles is $38,278 PLUS 25% LEAP.

LE availability pay (LEAP) can make a big difference (from what I hear) it is 25% over, you give up OT pay though. On the Misc. fed agency day in court the postal service seems to have a lot of pretty decent cases. I am guessing that this mostly stems from the postal police. Anything at an 1811 would be pretty cool.

Not exactly. LEAP includes "unscheduled overtime." Scheduled overtime, such as travel for training on your regular days off, some protective details, etc., are charged separately as OT.

In Southern California those criminal cases will be from the Postal Inspectors or possibly OIG, and not the Postal Police.

Does anyone know if Postal OIG S/A's have take home vehicles?

My guess is yes. Most 1811's (SA's) get one, and I would have heard about it if Postal OIG agents didn't.

The only 1811's here in Southern California that don't get take home rides are Department of Education OIG. I think for awhile some of the 1811 DUSM's were having to ride share, but i'm not sure if that is still taking place...

Thanks for the replies. Here in NYC, many Postal Inspectors are not allowed to take their GOV's home unless they have a field stop in the P.M. Of course, they do their best to have some work late in the day!

These are open positions, meaning you do not have to be an 1811!! You just have to meet the min. Requirements.

USAJOBS didn't post the full requirements. One of the requirements is that you have already completed the Criminal Investigative Training Program, CITP, down at FLETC or an equivilent Training. Go to the website and pull up the vacancies. Trust me I thought it was open also. But if you go to the website and pull up the vacancy you will see that this is a requirement they are looking for. Again I don't know why USAJOBS didn't post it the way it's posted on their website.

Irish, actually I received an email from the contact person, they stated the requirement was being a FEDERAL 1811 for aleast 4 years. which kind of sucks .

I spoke to my friend who is a SA with Postal OIG and he said they are looking for current 1811's who want to come over. I'm not into working caseloads consisting mainly of administrative stuff. However for those of you who are thinking of making the switch, they have some field office openings in areas where the commute would be short. In addition, they are supposedly big on teleworking...

It has been a problem for everyone. What was posted on USAJOBS is different then what the OIG website has.

SoCalFed, I understand they're taking the employee criminal cases that the postal inspectors used to work, so there won't be as much admin. stuff.
The telecommuting aspect really appeals to me ... ;)

You are correct that the IG is taking over employee cases from the PIS. It is interesting for me to hear both sides, as I have friends with Postal IG and PIS. Each 'side' has as a definite take on this and where the IG is heading...

Just to update this thread - USPS OIG did indeed take over the internal mail theft and internal crimes mission , minus assaults, from the Postal Inspectors. They now investigate all internal crimes, to include but nor limited to employees dealing or using narcotics, stealing mail, rifling mail, engaging in retail theft, financial fraud, etc. Much more criminally oriented than a couple years ago, where it was strictly fraud, waste and abuse. They have also just started using Federal Mag Court tickets for lower level crimes that the US Attorneys wont take as full cases, which at least gets them a misdemeanor conviction on some of the criminal acts not deemed important enough to prosecute before a Federal District Judge, such as cariers throwing away or burning mail they didn't feel like delivering.
