I have kind of a unique situation and I need some help from a VA trooper if possible.

Over 10 years ago now I got a ticket in Newport News for 78 in a 55. I was only 17 at the time. I live in SC and after I returned home I called the number on the cite in an attempt to pay and was told I HAD to appear. I told them that this was not feasible and tried for several weeks right up until my court date to make some kind of arrangements to no avail. Well to make a long story short I just said screw it and never paid it (please spare the lectures)

I had totally forgotten about it and have been a police officer here in SC for 4 years now. Well I ran across a letter in some paperwork I found a week or so ago from VSP stating that my right to operate a motor vehicle in VA was permanently revoked(this letter is 7 years old). South Carolina does not have reciprocity with VA so no kind of suspension has ever showed up on my license. I did an NCIC and DMV check last night at work and found nothing.

I have been back to VA several times and never had any issues but I just found this letter and was reminded of the whole ugly incident.

I am planning a trip to VA in the next few weeks and dont want to run into any issues. Who do I need to call to have them check and determine what if anything I need to do to. I dont want to get stop for something and end up in jail. My chief wouldnt like that.

If your privilege has been "revoked" (probably just suspended) in Virginia the letter would be from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, not the Virginia State Police.

You will need to contact the Newport News J & D Court since your trial went forward in your absence, pay the fine and then contact the VA DMV and pay the re-instatement fee. After doing that, if you don't have anything else, your privilege will be restored in Virginia.

P.S. It wouldn't show on NCIC or your DMV (in SC)....if you ran it through VA DMV I am sure it would show.....SUSPENDED-FAILURE TO PAY FINE

Yeah thats my fear, guess I definitely cant ask for PC on a 10 year old traffic warrant haha. The reason I checked NCIC is I figured by now if they were that interested in it they would have issued a bench warrant.

I will give them a call and see if I can track it down. If they start that same crap they did last time about me having to appear and pay in person and all that then I guess they will just have to eat it. I will just make my wife drive ;) :D

They won't start that "crap", you have already been convicted of reckless driving.....a Class 1 Mis. in VA.....they obviously don't want you to appear as a capias would have been entered on you, and THAT would have showed up on NCIC. They just want your money.....could be a max of $2,500.00!!

When I tried to pay the fine years ago they wouldnt take it in any form, cash check or credit card, they told me that I HAD to appear. They actually did this to my dad too which he was traveling alot at the time so it wasnt that big of a deal with him. Thats the crap I was referring to. I wouldnt have even had this problem if I could have just mailed a fine and plead guilty.

Yeah, with reckless you must appear as it is a charge that you can get jail time for, that is why they won't let you pay it before the trail date.

Now that you have been convicted they will let you pay for it.......but I can only imagine the late fees that will have racked up.
