I appreciate your help the reason im asking you because i will be driving for CA and i want to know if i should take my own tv any suggestions.
If you like a bigger tv and have room in your car, then you can bring one. Usually those graduating will try and unload them for $40 or less. You can also rent tvs for a monthly fee at the fletc store.

Right now I think pretty much every room in the Taj is doubled up.I believe it's still only the first 2 floors. I have a couple of friends on the 5th floor of the Taj with their own room/bathroom. I'm in the dorms behind the mermorial and I love it. Single person rooms/bathrooms, close enough to walk back for lunch to shower/change, and we also have a pool, tennis, and volleyball court. The quality of the rooms in the Taj are far superior though.

What you wear on test day has 0% to do with getting this job. I'm sure if you ware a F the police t shirt, they might kick you out of the test, but other than that, the GS 7 giving the test has nothing to do with the hiring process. They are just test proctors.
I wore jeans and t shirt.
I'll point out that I've taken the test 3 times and at least 2 out of the 3 times there were mid-level CBP managers in plain clothes as part of the background people.
Is someone likely to shoot himself in the foot by wearing jeans and a tee-shirt...probably not. Might you get a bit more positively noticed by putting in the extra effort to come dressed more business-like/formally...probably.

Requiring you to take a poly or requiring everyone to take a poly?
per my earlier post,I was told that the polygraph is a possibility.Maybe it is on a case by case basis I have no idea.

The initial test, people go in jeans and tshirt because it's administered by OPM officials and not actual CBP officers. Is that why people go dressed the way they do? I'm thinking about jeans, sneakers, and a golf (polo) shirt.

But what is positively noticed at a massive entry test going to get you? Will it increase your score? Will it help you get promoted faster? Will it speed up a TO?
Now I'm guessing you were at a condensed testing site? Now that's a different ball of wax and I would wear a suit to that. But for me, I took each step on it's own.
And I'm working a horribly boring spot right now so I guess I just want to argue with someone, sorry.
So on another note, how about that "Take the mask off" stuff for all the CBPO's out there. I would really like that when I'm processing an Aeromexico flight fresh out of Mexico City.

Hey, your working right now? I'm guessing you are using your phone to post. What do you have? Blackberry, iPhone? And, do your supervisors mind if you check your phone while working when nothing is going on? Or do you always have to look busy during duty hours?

No, I just had got home, guess I could have worded that different. But let's say I was on a G computer, hypothetically I could post on O.com because hypothetically it isn't blocked.
But you bring up a good point about phones, seeing how it's a big topic around the water cooler at my work right now. You cannot use your phone (or have it with you according to some) in a primary or secondary processing environment. Meaning no cellie around travelers.

So, according to some, your cellphone has to be left in your locker/car. Is that a POE rule, or agencey rule? And, what else is being debated around the water cooler?

Seattle is a guaranteed job if you can pass basic muster right now. Easter WA is kind of ebbing and flowing this year.
Seattle is hiring like it's going out of style, I'm convinced they are building a small army and will take over BC Canada soon.
Yeah, Blaine has many new folks in the pipeline as well.

As far as a suit to the test.........blow it in another direction! Absolutly noooo need for a suit or even buisiness casual. All the need in the world to dress comfortable. Jeans a dinner shirt and sneaks will suffice. Just don't show up sporting a "born to loose" tatoo and a swat stika or gangsta tats. No extra points, no one will care, no one will put you on any list (mental or written) for dressing up. Regardless of what anyone ever tells you it's purely fabricated BS. On the other hand if you are comfy, don't look like a dead beat and think your outfit is condusive to sitting in cramped seats surounded by 100 other applicants for hours while stressing thousands of possible answers to hundreds of questions, put it on.
RobRok
04-30-2009, 02:26 AM
The extra 1 or 2 points you score just because you are comfortable can put you in the pool for a TO. The glance you get from a "sleeper" will do nothing for you at all. Certainly not if you don't score at least a 70.

Well...I'm going to have to disagree, at least in part.
I've tested 3 times, in three different small, NB cities/towns in three different states. I twice tested as a GS-11. Both of the times I tested as a GS-11 I've met both CBP managers and journeyman CBPOs there.
I think there is a chance to be noticed and to present an image. For some people, their first impression on their management will be at the test, might as well go business casual just in case someone is watching. Plus...you dress smart...you look smart...you feel smart.
There is no "jeans and tee-shirt" option for the most part at work. If you can't do your best in business casual at the test, how are you going to function well in uniform carrying around a 20 pound duty belt?

'Nuf respect due".
I am not sure about testing for a GS-11 position. I was speaking on behalf of us testing for the GS5/7 slot as a CBPO. I can look smart in jeans and a dinner shirt. In fact as far as comfort goes......better put on a long sleve. You can always roll it up and is more professional. If I were testing in a smaller group for a GS11.......I would go buisiness casual.
What is NB cities/towns?

I wasn't testing for a GS-11 position. I was reapplying as a GS-11 for a GS-05/07 CBPO entry-level slot, same as you all. I was looking to relocate elsewhere and reapplying was one of many options I was pursuing.
Suit yourself.(pun intended:D) I doubt it would make a huge difference. Just don't be suprised to find out that the guy you saw standing off in the corner at the test site is actually your GS-13 manager.

Hey I see you have kids, what do you plan to do when you go to FLETC? I am having a hard time with this...I really want this job but worried about being away fromt hem for 15 weeks! My husband would watch them but it's just a very long time! Just curious as to another take on it. Thanks.
I have three girls ages 5, 6 , and 8. My husband will care for them while I am gone and I have my laptop so I will be taking that, and using the webcam to call home daily.
I think it is important to prepare them, my children have known for months that mom was trying to get a new job and that she might have to go away for awhile.
I have started them on a new routine so that it will be easier on dad while I am gone. They get there own breakfast, clothes, and are starting to learn to do their own hair.
I am looking into babysitting for them while my husband is at work, I am looking into friends and family, or a summer day camp.
I am preparring a binder with anything I can think that he may ask for, divided by each child. such as their shoe sizes and what size pants or tops they wear. also who has what allergies ( stuff he knows but forgets sometimes). What insurance coverage they have, and the numbers to each. Also I need to set up a power of attorney for my husband and my mother because he is not biologically my kids dad, there dad has major issues with crack coccaine and with a power of attorney it will be hard for him to just show up and take them. so the attorney information will be in there. I am also going to give him some quick and easy recipes since I am the cook of the family and he will have to take on that role when no one comes over and cooks for them.
That is all I can think of, I have been in organization mode since entering TSU. I want to make it as easy as possible for him and the kids, normally I am not this organized lol.:) I hope this answers your question, it will be hard to leave them but just remeber it will be worth it in the end and in my case it will be what is best for the family.

I am not a mother, but I am a father. I know it is a little different, but I think the belief system is the same.
You must do what is best for your family, even it means sacrificing a little time in order to set up the big picture.
Remember, if reward is what you want, then there may be a little risk involved.

One last thing about the attire before the story gets old or turns into another wasteful argument. I feel more comfortable in business casual in a business setting like the one where I tested.
I am in law enforcement and when I went through the process I was told by the investigator that out of the three times I was there in their office, I had a business suit 2 times. Right away I started thinking what he was talking about because I was only there twice. Then I remembered I was called in for something that seemed unimportant but I had a suit. Finally I remembered my second meeting with them I took the coat off because it was a 100 degree day.
Moral of the story is they watch this stuff and write it down. MAYBE not at the test but personally I just don't wear jeans to a federal office. But hey, if you want to dress like you're going to the DMV that's fine too. ;)
To add to someone's question some time ago. The BI that came to my house wore a suit. It shows respect to wear something on the same level. I had a shirt and tie.
Morning everybody... New to this but have been reading everyones input. I'm glad I'm not the only one waiting this out its extremely stressful. Hopefully this BI gets cleared soon. Been waiting since OCT 2008, thats when I met with my BI
Trying myself to get into jfk, whats is taking so long with you?

Yup, I always dress a level above what's expected. My motto is always, "dress for the job you want, not the job you have."
I'll be there in a suit, and I'll definitely go to the FBI test in a suit as well.

Thank you so much for the insight. I know it's best for my family. My kids are 3 and 18 months so it's harder to explain to them. I would get a web cam too I had thought of doing that. That is a good idea about the binder I should start on something like that too!

For me that's the reason I dressed up, I felt more comfortable that way. It was a bit of a confidence booster sitting in nice clothes beside the guy with holes in his shirt that more than likely hadn't showered in a week.
As far as scores, maybe he aced it and I failed... you never know! If that's the case though I sure hope none of you have to room with him at fletc ;)
Anyone who just reapplied this past announcement get a NOR or TOS!!!!!!!!!!
I called MHC and was told I would receive a NOR then a TOS. I was also informed on this forum I wouldnt receive a NOR since Im using my old score. I just dont want to get lost in the system as other have stated here already.

500Pearl already answered your question
CBP = Customs & Border Patrol
CBPO = Customs & Border Patrol Officer, there is no one better than another. In this read, the terms CBPO and CBP Officer are interchangeable terms. ICE = Immigration & Customs Enforcement.
Both ICE and CBP are under DHS, Department of Homeland Security.
ICE has numerous positions, including FPS, DRO, Special Agents, IEA.

I reapplied under the new announcement for Colorado, as I feel like Montana might make things difficult to move onto another agency. I just checked
CASS and my background has been fully cleared, not just interim, and all thats left is my medical. I had to clear up a medical issue and that information was sent away last week, so I'm guessing that'll clear fairly quickly. So I'm wondering if its still possible to get a new TO in after being put into TSU, but before my EOD?
Also, is there anyone currently working in Montana that would be willing to share their thoughts on how difficult it would be to pursue my current applications with BPA and IEA. I'm concerned about location to testing, etc.

within the Agency there are CBP Officers and Border Patrol Agents
CBPO's go through the GS pay scale, and BPA's go through the GL pay scale, as for retirement both now have a similar plan 6c/12d.

junito,
don't try to compare your VBT results taking so long with other applicants timeline, all POE's will process the VBT's at their leisure (at their pace), the only ones that can help you find out what's going on with your results is MHC.
CALL them!... they will let you know what's up, if you're still showing up on CASS and the hotline you have not been dropped and are still in the process.
Just chill for a bit dude, the results will come in... again CALL MHC they will fill you in on your progress.

With a new vacancy, comes a new wave of applicants to this forum in search of answers to questions that can be found by reading from the beginning of this thread. Thats what I did, and it answered a lot of questions that I had. I suggest all of the new testers to do the same, if you're serious about this job.

This whole hiring process is driving me crazy. I have been in this process for over two years. I work for DHS, already have a security clearance, have a B.A. was in the military, and my background is clean. I went to TSU just recently. I know someone who has never held down a steady job, drinks to much, has no education, lied on his application about his past. He took the test 3 months ago, met with his BI one month ago, and was just sent to TSU for the same location I applied. He didn’t qualify for GS-5 none the less GS-7 and he got GS-7. The Minneapolis hiring center called him and advised him on how to re-write his job experience so he could clear GS-7. While meeting with his BI he began telling the investigator about his past and the things he did wrong and the investigator advised him to “keep those things to himself or he would not get the job” I met with my BI for 5 hours and nothing was left uncovered. This guy met with his BI for 1 hour and was advised to lie. My BI was in the security office for over 8 months, his was in there for a month. I have said it before. This whole thing is a crap shoot.

Yoda answered your question, not I.
Border Patrol Agents work between the Ports of Entry. It'll depend, but generally BPA work involves catching illegal aliens or some other type of smuggling. Customs and Border Protection Officers work at the Ports of Entry. It'll depend, but generally CBPO work inspecting goods and people who legitimately enter the US.
Do yourself a favor, search both terms and study up on both positions on this board. There's at least one large BP thread currently active.
"Better" is subjective. One man's "better is an other man's "worse".

This post should make people use the "I've been waiting WEEKS for my such and such," much less frequently. I was guilty of the same mistake but after seeing posts such as this one or yoda's, I felt like a heel complaining about my "wait" and I've changed my tune. Please, all new apps, re-read this and search through some of yoda's HUNDREDS of posts here to get an idea of how long and illogical this whole process can be before complaining about why you haven't received results for something you did weeks ago.

An 18-24-30 month process between testing and EOD used to be pretty much the norm back 5-6 years ago.
The process isn't fast and it isn't put into place to benefit the applicant, but to benefit Uncle Sugar.
It's only purpose is to ultimately hire thousands of new trainees from a pool of 10's of thousands of applicants.

I am not a parent but this is a great idea for all those that are.

Hey JDNoble81,
Did you BI transfer over from CBP to ICE for your two apps? Also, it looks like you had to take another fitness test for ICE. I thought the pre-employment fitness test was the same for both.
Just wondering because I just registered to take the written for an IEA position under the current annoucement.
Thanks,

How do you know just by looking at CASS that your BI fully cleared and not just Interim?

If your security requirement says completed and you have not met with a background investigator, it is only an interim.
Anyway to find out how many openings there are at a specfic port.

Thanks,
The only thing that transferred from CBP to ICE was the medical and drug test since they were less than a year old. The fitness test is different.
The BI didn't carry over. My CBP BI didn't clear until 4/1. In Feb, I was sent a pre-employment inquiry from ICE regarding some issues in my past that I had to address. I addressed them and sent the paperwork back. A few weeks later, my background showed on their system in Dallas as cleared. However, its only an interm since I have not met with a BI for the IEA position.
Good luck on the exam.

Anyway to find out how many openings there are at a specfic port.
Ask someone in the port's management. They ought to know what "fully staffed" is for their port.
As an applicant...knowing that really isn't going to do you much good. What you need is a funded training slot to open up for you. You need to graduate from the academy before you can fill an opening.

There is no easy way that I know of to tell if you have a provisional clearance or not.
I'd send an email and ask...if you really want to know. If you've already EOD'd your supervisor ought to be able to look it up for you.

I agree with merlin, the only almost sure fire way to know is either email or call the hiring center. I had an interim for customs, but went though the full process for BP. When the full clearance for BP was granted I called the hiring center to confirm the full clearance was transferred over to customs, and a lady there was able to look it up on my file.
I say almost since sometimes when I call the hiring center I get someone who knows what they are talking about. And sometimes I get someone who seems to be new.

Personally, I'd stay away from calling people unless you really need to. Calling makes people drop what they're doing to answer the phone. That slow things down.
Email instead. They can work on/answer email during down time.

In the hopes of stalling long enough to get a new TO for Colorado I asked for my background to not show cleared in CASS until it was fully cleared and adjudicated. The next day it went from "Completed" to "Pending", and it remained there for a couple weeks. Today it changed back to "Completed", and thus that should mean it has been fully completed.

This past week has been busy for me. My Pre-Employment forms cleared CASS on Tuesday, I completed the medical/fitness yesterday, and just came home from taking the VBT today. A quick question for those who have received a TO and subsequently reapplied under a new announcement for the purpose of changing your geographic location. If/when you receive your new TO, does MHC send you a full packet? And if so, are you required to resend all of the forms (EQIP, Pre-Emp, etc.)? My guess is no - but how does MHC confirm that you accept the new TO (with geo-change) if you do not have to redo all of the forms? This question is moot if the new TO is not a full packet and just confirms your geo-change.

A couple weeks before you graduate from FLETC, your training officers will receive a final list of who's backgrounds have actually cleared all the way through.
Some officers graduate to only give back the badge at the end of the ceremony.

That is why I want to find out now. I don't want to quit my job if I'm not going to be cleared....really I don't SEE a reason why I woulnd't be but you never know. That also seems like a big waste of money to put someone through training only to have them not be able to go on the job (yeah I know it's the Govt but still)

Also, it can be checked in TECS. Can't remember what screen, maybe the "20" screen? When I was there my TECS instructor would check for us.
Also, during Pre-FLETC, TECS won't let you do the NCIC training unless your background is cleared.

Very, very, very few people do not clear before Graduation. I had a few people in my class who cleared the week before Graduation. Also, I had a classmate that received and beat a NOPA while there.

Hi Guys!!!
So, it has been a REALLY long time since I have posted here, but I have some new questions. I just checked CASS today and all the items have now changed to COMPLETED!!! yay!
1. What has been the average times that people have noticed on how long the wait is for the call?
2. My wife is pregnant and is due in August. If I were to get "the call" within the next few months, do you think they would delay my entry until after my child is born?
Thanks for any advice/help you guys might have...

I have heard of three cases, personally, that MHC delayed for any number of reasons. One friend had been working at the same place for 14 years and really liked the people there and felt bad leaving on such short notice. They gave him an extra month without batting an eye. I would say the birth of a child would definitely qualify for some extra time at home. Though, if you've read much of this forum, you realize there seems to be little rhyme, reason, or logic to anything in the process, at all. So never stop expecting the worst. That way you'll be prepared. But, if you were to force me to put money on it, I would place the bet in your favor. Pre-congratulations by the way. :D

It really is very frustrating to see so many blow through the process while my file is on someone's desk!...

Did anyone applied for Miami? I want to stay in town that's why I picked MIA but if I get any offer besides Miami I will take it as long is in Florida. I've been told from some officers that I know that we have to take this as a one time opportunity and take any chances CBP offers you to get your foot in and start your career. MIA is my preference but having more than just one place to go work at, is more chances you will get a call after the whole hiring process. Those offering you and different place than your GEO preference is one way of letting us know they are interested and the best chance we have of getting that important call at the end of all this nerve wrecking months.

That is a good question, since this is my perdiciment. I was already EOD for May. Im not sure if I need a whole new package needs to be filled out. Lucky for me though I copied all forms and kept copies. If anyone knows if all the forms need to be done again in my case(already EOD). Other than that it was overall good.

quick question for all of you IEA guys, it's basically a jailer position, correct? it involves transporting, apprehending, securing, deporting? fugitive retrieval kind of deal? also highi school GED requirements or a ba/bs. less stringent requirements (educational and experience) than Special Agent and CBP officer, correct? just would like all of your experiences and reasons for applying for IEA when CBP seems like the better choice (for those who don't mind sharing their reasons). thanks
where on the announcement does it say high school or ged requirement?

Hey nycmike87, how many new officers where there on your 1st day of orientation? Did anyone bring there spouses that you noticed? I have my 1st day out here at SFO on the 18th,trying to get an idea of how many they usually call.
Just curious, why would anyone bring their spouse to work?

GED? You need 3 years experience or a bachelors degree for a GS5 for the IEA gig. From what I hear there is not much in the way of corrections type stuff and it involves mostly transport of criminal aliens and going to jails to interview them and figure out who needs to be deported. The pay seems comparable if not more and it may be a good foot in the door for an ICE 1811 spot later on. Also there is opportunity for travel or at least moving around to different places in NYC (even if its just from jail to office to court and back) instead of just working inside the airport everyday for the next 20 years. Don't get me wrong I like florescent lighting as much as the next guy but fresh air is nice too sometimes.
The way I figure CBP you deal with the general public and try and find out who is a criminal. IEA you deal with criminals and figure out which are the dangerous ones and what to do with them.
But forget all that. Your right it sounds TERRIBLE. No one put in for it. Especially if you are going for NYC and are gonna score higher than me. Forget you even heard about it!

i have 13 people with me more next week also. And why would you bring a spouse? This is your first day of work. Its your Job not theirs lol. ..... Dont bring your spouse or anyone else, just yourself in a suit when the time comes.
Actually bringing your spouse on your first day of work is kind of interesting. It allows them to meet you co-workers/supervisors bosses. I can see where it could make for a more family friendly environment as far as work goes. The boss could kind of give a small orientation for the spouses as to whats going on. What other job requires you to go away for several months when you are first hired. I don't think my wife would go, but it is kind of an interesting idea.

Well... I'm not sure if any one has! I ask because in my packet it state's that "spouses are welcomed to attend" it might be that every POE has it's own criteria. Again I wouldn't know! No I wouldn't find it strange, if someone is just filling out paperwork all day. Maybe CBP out here doesn't mind introducing significant others as to what kind of work they will be doing exactly. I highly doubt that the 1st day of orientation as they call it will be WORK!!!

Either way its your future Job. Dont bring other factors into play. Just do the normal thing and show up "ready to work". That should also be on the papers you received with your reporting papers. If you want your spouse to come tell them ok, but when i graduate. Which makes more sense, because you not completely done yet, Do you get what im trying to say?

I would think that if he found out he might be annoyed that you wasted his time. You'll be lucky if you don't get a bill from CBP for the expense of hiring a contractor to come out and meet you not to mention going to see your references and all the paperwork involved. Besides all that why would you want to go through with meeting the BI if you failed the VBT and are not eligible for the job!?!? Couldn't you find a better way to spend the afternoon besides answering deeply personal questions to a stranger for a job you cant have?

To answer your question, Piegan and Roosville. Why...because they're both fairly busy smaller ports which are not all that far from something resembling civilization, Montana/Alberta-wise.
Then again, I don't have to live there...you do. What exactly are you looking for?
quiet or not so quiet...
cheap or not so cheap...
rural or brutally rural...
Sweetgrass is the busiest port. Eastern MT is pretty much empty and uneventful. Raymond, Roosville and Sweetgrass are the only 24 hour ports.

I'm looking for something reasonably close to civilization, probably like an hour or so is fine. I'm not looking for dirt cheap housing, but at first glance online, Eureka looks fairly expensive given its still a small town.
Any tips on where to live if I chose either Piegan or Roosville?

Piegan has G-housing alongside the port.
Western MT is getting expensive. Lot of Asians are buying up property there.
For the most part you can forget being within an hour of civilization, especially if you define civilization as 25K or more. Montana doen't have much. Calgary, AB is roughly 150 miles or so north of Piegan, that's pretty much it as far as anything major goes.
Sweetgrass is probably your most likely option. Shelby, MT is roughly 35 mile south of the port and is roughly 3.5-4K.

Dear CBP Employee:
NTEU continues to press the Department of Homeland Security to permit CBP employees working on the frontlines with the public to wear respiratory protection at their discretion.
The DHS interim guidance on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) issued to all DHS employees yesterday mandates masks for employees who work within six feet of those known or suspected to be infected with the swine flu virus, but does not address NTEU’s request that employees whose jobs require them to regularly work within 6 feet of the travelling public be permitted to wear N95-rated filter masks at their discretion. DHS has indicated that the interim guidance was not intended to address NTEU’s specific request and that further guidance would be forthcoming, however, we have not seen anything yet.
To follow up, I have sent a letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano and Office of Personnel Management Director John Berry again reiterating the urgency of NTEU’s request. I continue to press these points at the Department level, with Secretary Napolitano’s office, at the bureau level, with Acting Commissioner Jayson Ahern. In addition, we have been in contact with the White House and our supporters on Capitol Hill, pushing for a resolution to this issue.
We have also issued a number of news releases and media statements and have been conducting interviews with reporters about this situation.
I understand your frustration at the delays we are experiencing. I will continue to use all available means to press our demand that DHS employees be allowed to wear masks at their discretion and will keep you updated on any further developments.

Guess I'll be off to the range ;)
DOH!
For the same reason I do not like the Beretta 96 Brigadier, the P2000 is double action only, and it does not compare to the quality, durability, and accuracy of a Glock. Also, I do not like the location of the magazine release, which takes a little bit of getting used to after releasing the magazine with my right thumb for so many years. The handgrip is shorter than the Glock's, and while rapid reloading during quals, my hand has gotten pinched between the magazine and the bottom of the grip on more than a few occasions. The barrel is shorter than my trusty old Glock 17, so accuracy went down at the fifteen yard line.

Expect quite the struggle in the winter to get into/out of the port with a 70+ mile one-way commute. People do it though, I know ND people who traveled 180 mile 2-way commutes.

I wouldn't see why this would be a problem since it was close to a decade ago. On the other hand they did close the announcement early because of to many applicants, and I am assuming you applied on this recent one? I had originally applied in September 2007!! I didn't send in the info for the original location I had applied for so it delayed everything. The bad thing that they don't tell you is that you can't apply for two locations at the same time, when you do that it cancels you out of the first place you had applied for... so its been a long process. The good thing is that I'm graduated from college now and can go pretty much anywhere. The latest TSL letter said I was selected for St. Thomas USVI !! Any other advice??

Anyone knows how often is the CBP announcement open every year? Does it come out every year?
There is no set schedule for opening announcements. They open them when they need to. You might see 3 in a year, you might see 1 in 2 years.
Before 12D/6C came about last July, it was fairly predictable to see a late winter/spring announcement and a fall/early winter announcement each year. It's much less predictable now, but I'd be willing to bet that they next announcement comes about before the calendar year is up.

From the sounds of this post, I presume you already received the initial letter stating you were unsuitable and responded. This would be CBP's response to your response? If that is the case you have two options. You can let it go and try in a few more years, or you can appeal the decision. The former is easy the latter would probably require a lawyer. A few pages back someone posted a link that shows the legal determinations for different security clearance issues. The adjudication process is the same, just different standards are used for suitability and clearance issues. Any advise we could give would be purely conjecture because we are not intimately familiar with your situation, so I'd consider my two options and go from there.

quick question for all of you IEA guys, it's basically a jailer position, correct? it involves transporting, apprehending, securing, deporting? fugitive retrieval kind of deal? also highi school GED requirements or a ba/bs. less stringent requirements (educational and experience) than Special Agent and CBP officer, correct? just would like all of your experiences and reasons for applying for IEA when CBP seems like the better choice (for those who don't mind sharing their reasons). thanks
I dug the below post by an IEA from the IEA thread. I'll say it more or less mirrors what I've heard about the position...but I'm no expert on ICE/DRO. Truthfully, outside of training I've never met an IEA. ICE is a small organization, by CBP standards, and IEA's probably number 1/4 to 1/5 the total number of CBPOs.
The educational standards for an IEA and a CBPO should be roughly equal. I'm not sure what the minimum educational standards are for an ICE SA. Since it's a highly competive job, it's probably near impossible to get hired on as one with minimal qualifications.
Ok guys and gals here is the skinny on IEA,
If you are assigned to a camp, you will be a glorified Immigration CO! that does a lot of Bus and Van driving, booking in bodies (not enforce/cap work)and assignments such as: feed, medical, laundry (yes, really!) counting camp cards, key control, gate access control, clothing them, suicide watch, disturbance control and etc. When you are not doing that (at a camp) you will be making really good money on details all over the nation (fugops, cap, worksight enf.) and flying all over the world escorting aliens home, staying in 4 & 5 star hotels (most of the time) However, the Gov seems to be cutting back on escorts and doing more JPATS (conair) flights with contractors on the flights.
If you are assigned to a district office away from the border, your day will consist of mostly CAP work which is alot of van driving, alot of interviewing at jails and alot of desk work. You will not fly as much at a cap office but you will get details.
I am not really bitter, just disapointed, the big picture (for me) is it is hard to actually feel like your doing law enforcement, I have always felt more as a babysitter with a badge and a gun. I have been a IEA for 5 years now and although I have gained alot of experience in a short time and worked in 3 districts, the job satisfaction I was hoping for by my 5th year is just not there.
The plus side is the job security is outstanding, I have my 3 years career conditional so i can come back when i leave if i want, the money is good and you will just keep getting raises every year. The normal career track is to go from IEA to DO or SIEA, then SDDO, AFOD and then a DC boy, but the good ole'boy network is alive and strong so be patient.
Good luck to all.

Just wait, they will review everything and you will either be cleared to move on or get another letter. The waiting game is mostly what getting this job is about I think lol. I am not sure what kind of timeline you are looking at for all of this to clear, but you did your part now sit and wait lol.
Just wondering, if you tested in march of this year when was the announcement posted? and when you tested in march you got your NOR 10 days later? so then they opened another announcement in april, and it's been about 2 weeks since the announcement closed and no one got their NOR? wondering if anyone knows why...the hold up in things if some people have tested already?
Maybe mid Feb? This was before I knew anything about NOR's TSU's or BI's LOL. Went to a job fair registered and was sent a test date.

I was recently visited by the TSU fairy. Here is the quick version of the story:
This past week I was doing a job that involved driving across the country. Had no cell reception for almost the whole trip. Checked online CASS from hotel Monday night and it still showed my medical was still pending. Finally got reception late Tuesday and I had two messages on there from TSU trying to offer me a job. The calls came Monday at 8am and Tuesday at 8am. That means my medical cleared, my file was sent to TSU, and TSU called me all in such a short time frame CASS didn't even reflect it yet. Crazy. So I called and left a message for the TSU man saying I will take the job and where I want to work. When I finally talked to him Wednesday he said that message saved me a spot among a short list of openings for that location. Glad I left the message.
Thanks for all of the experienced CBPOs that help us on this forum. We would be lost without you. Good luck to the rest of you.

To the person who ‘stole’ (!) my spot for Norfolk, VA two weeks ago – thank you!
Today I’ve got my own spot and exactly what I wanted, too! Dulles Airport – Class 957, EOD June 1st!
Thank you all for the inspiration and moral support!

As far as I can remember they repeatedly ask the same question, but just worded differently. So just make sure you answer truthfully and you shouldn't have a problem with that section.
I think it's normal coz the BI don't know about the hiring process and they don't know whether you fail on the medical/fitness or vbt. That is MHC's responsability.
Just wondering, why did it take you so long to get a TOS with a 89. You took the test in 07. Did you reapply?
How does this compare to the NYPD job, salary, pension, vac, sick time (unlimitied) If anyone here was offered both positions which one would you take? Im on both lists, not sure what I would do.

I'm curious if any of the current Montana CBPO's have any insight to which POE's I might have the opportunity to choose from?

Piegan had/has G-housing, at least as of 2 years ago. ND used to have a bunch of it too, but they phased most of it out 2-3 years ago.
Family, yes. Rent, varied wildly. I think they pretty much negotiated every house differently. Some people paid for utilities, some people had them included. I don't recall exactly what it cost, it was something like $250 a month for a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 story house with a basement. Remember, that's living next door to the port...usually pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
What's available for new hires today...I really have no idea.

Hi to all,
Haven't been here for a while and still trying to catch up with over 250 pages in this thread.
Cass shows everything as completed (haven't updated signature), so I think I should be referred to TSU from there.
I've heard that when you get the call from TSU you're offered three different spots in your Geo Pref, (East TX in my case), and you get to choose from one of those. What happens if they don't offer anything you like and you decline at the moment, do they give you a call once something else comes up? or do they drop you from the pool?
Not saying that I won't take the first thing they offer but just wondering...
Thanks

If I had to guess I'd say NYC pretty much nailed it.
Announcements are opened when they need one opened. It only takes a fews day max to get one up and running. I seriously doubt they plan them out more than a month or so in the future. If any of us are lucky, we might know a week or two in advance of an opening.

When I worked in Montana Gov houses had a LONGGGGGGG wait list. Few houses (not bad houses, but not enough to go around) I lived 30 miles away from work (fuel effecincy is a must) and there was not a lot to choose from there. On the plus side, not much traffic....ever. Housing is one of the main problems facing the Northern border officers.

BI Question ....
Do you meet with the background investigator before or after the BI? I have something I forgot to include on my BI paperwork. Almost 13 years ago I received a citation for open container. It was a festival weekend in a small town and the city suspended the ordinance till Sun 12am. A large group of people were standing outside a bar drinking, including me. At 12:10 a group of local police approached and wrote everyone a citation that had a beer. Nothing sever, I was just guilty of stupidity. Anyway, I paid the fine and had completely forgotten about it. I just remembered it over the weekend and that I did not include on my BI paperwork and it specifically ask for any alcohol related charges regardless of time if I remember correctly. Is there a way to notify them of something I forgot or do I bring it up when I meet with the BI?

From what I have heard and read legal. But always legal. i.e. I heard of a case where the spouse initially came to the U.S. illegally but later married and gained legal status. However clearance was not given to the applicant because of the initial illegal status of the spouse. Not sure if you can appeal that.

Your background investigation starts months before you are contacted by an investigator. He/she may or may not already know about the forgotten citation before your meeting. It should not be that big of a deal. Just bring all supporting documentation, citation, payment receipt, ect., for your initial meeting to help the investigator locate it. And just explain to him/her that you forgot about, was not trying to hide it. It will look much better offering the forgotten infomation instead of them finding it and asking you about it. You may even want to tell him/her about it when they call to setup the meeting so they could research it before meeting in person.

Oh yea I wouldn't doubt that. The case I referred to the applicant's spouse was illegal before they got married. I guess it differs case by case though as with many other aspects of the hiring process.

If you meant to ask can a CBP officer, one who is already trained and on duty, must marry a legal US citizen, I dont know but I highly doubt it matters. I do know that APPLICANTS can marry or be married to whoever, but you will need to answer some extra questions and provide more documentation as to the legality of your spouses presence in the United States.
My spouse is waiting for her perm. residency so she is not even that yet, but she is legally in the process and has all her papers in order. If you cant provide this, you wont beat the NOPA they fire at you.

I know it's easier said than done, but dont sweat the VBT. For me, the hardest part of the hiring process is the written test, so you've already made it past that! Just go in there confident and relax, it certainly won't help psyching yourself out prior to the VBT. If you have read this forum from the very first post, you'll see that only a few out of MANY have failed the VBT, so the odds of you passing is very high. Goodluck.
Anybody took the test for CBPO (GEO JFK/NY) but the test site was in Philly on May 2nd at 9am? I was on my way to pick up my friend who was finished taking the exam, but unfortunately, while I was waiting on a red light, I got sideswipped by a trolley/bus.

Hello,
I'm a newbie here. I wasn't able to find any posts about this, so I apologize if this had been answered already.
I'm having a bit of an issue. As you can see in my signature, I've been trying to get into the CBP since Nov '07, and recently things started moving.
When I did my VBT in Miami, the administrator said I should be hearing back from them in 4-5 weeks time or that I could also check my progress on CASS.
My problem was I never received a (snailmail nor email) letter with my Application ID.
I wrote the DEU email address and they sent me my Application ID, however, never having logged into the CASS, I could never tell whether or not I was "in" the system.
When I tried to login, I got an error message saying that I'm not in the system.
My dilemma is having never logged in before, I don't know whether I have ever been in CASS or not.
How long has it taken you guys to be able to login on CASS? Was it right after you got your NOR for the written test?
Could it be I'm not in the system yet because my VBT and medical/physical exam results haven't been processed yet?
thanks in advance

If you received a TO (if you are going through VBT, Fit, Med you have received a TO) you should be in CASS. You will use the last four of your SSN and Announcement ID to log in. Your Announcement ID can be found on the upper right portion of you TO and most correspondence that followed the TO.

In reference to VBT Question:
Best advice I can give you is be confident in yourself and your abilities.
You already know what works best for you in calming down your stress level.
So prior to going to your VBT if you need to work out in the morning do it. If you have to stop at Starbucks and get coffee on the way do it. If you have to do the pre-game dump, have at it.
Everyone has their own way of getting rid of stress.
Just try not to think about it too much and you will be fine.
Just my opinion here, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. You might want to consider dressing up or going with casual friday for this.
Hope that helps...

This doesn't make sense. Did you get a TO? You wouldn't be schedueled for a VBT or a medical if you didn't. Your application ID# is on your TO. If you aren't in CASS and you got a TO then you need to call MHS and let them know.
