Yes, you'll have to wait for the announcement to close and as for "faster", no...not as you probably mean it.
You''ll wait for the announcement to close, your NOR and a TO...just as anybody else would. Assuming you get all that done before November, you'll "jump" to TSU ahead of anybody with a TO who's sitting and waiting for a step or more to be completed.
thank you

Your test score is good for 3 years or until they change the test..but your application is good for 1 year until you extend it yearly
So I tested in 2007, then my score will be good till 2010? Is that correct?

your application and test score are different
test score good for 3 years unless u want to retest to get higher but if you get lower they use that lower score
and your application is when you applied for that announcement and that's good for 1 year you have to reapply b4 your 1 year is up

I just met my BI yesterday.. Today, CASS updated my Background Investigation status to "completed". Is this an interim clearance or am I fully cleared without any more hitches? My friend called me and said she also met my BI today.

well if they sent you a fed ex package you don't have anything to worry about cause you would start the process, once the send you that fed ex package you have been pulled from the waiting pool so u won't be in the inventory anymore. you would have to reapply/extend your application thru usajobs or send MHC an email but you can only do that until you 3 years is up if your planning to use your old score

Sorry for bothering, I having been going thru a lot these last few months.

I'm actually a female but it's ok I think I understand cause I have been going through the same, your not bothering me what I would do is call MHS first and ask them how they go about doing it, they may need you to just reapply or not just check back and make sure it was taken care of. I actually reapplied so I'm waiting for the announcement to close to get back in the inventory. but in order to reapply yes there have to be an announcement, but if you want to change geo location then you can do that at any time.

Don't worry, just wait till your 1 year is up and then contact MHC and ask them what do you need to do. I thought that you had to wait six months in order to take your VBT again. But I think that's only for BPA.

Video Based Test (VBT):
1. What is the VBT?
The VBT is a Video Based Test consisting of several different scenarios. You will view taped scenarios and respond to the video. You will be taped while responding to the different scenarios. The VBT will be administered to all individuals who pass the written test and are conditionally selected. The examination takes about one-half hour and is evaluated by a team of CBP management officials. The tape will later be reviewed and evaluated. The test is rated on a pass/fail basis. Therefore, you will need to receive a “pass” rating to continue through the process. Approximately 6 weeks after you have been tentatively selected, you will receive a letter informing you of the date, time and location for your VBT. Successful VBT results are valid for three years. If you successfully completed the VBT within the past 3 years, you will not be scheduled for another VBT.
2. Do I need a VBT?
Anyone who has not had a VBT for the CBP Officer position will be scheduled for the VBT. If you had a VBT within the last 3 years, and passed, you will not be scheduled for another VBT. You should include a copy of your eligible “Notice of Results” (for your VBT) when you are asked to submit an application.
3. How will I be notified of the VBT?
Approximately 6 weeks after you have been tentatively selected, you will receive a letter informing you of the date, time and location of your VBT. You will be scheduled for the VBT at the location you chose when you registered for the written test. If you have moved or otherwise need to request a new interview location, you will need to contact the Oral Board unit at 612-467-7038.
4. What do I need to bring to the Interview?
You will need to bring a government-issued picture ID, i.e., Drivers License, Passport, etc. You will not be given a VBT without a valid picture ID.
5. How should I dress for the VBT?
Although we cannot tell you what to wear to the VBT, we can tell you that your VBT will be taped and later reviewed by a panel of trained interviewers. Use your best judgment.
6. What if I cannot attend the VBT on the date scheduled for me?
You may call the Oral Board Unit at 612-467-7038 to request a reschedule. Reschedules will only be given under extenuating circumstances. You will be notified of the scheduled VBT at least 2 weeks in advance to enable you to make arrangements to attend.
7. How will I know if I passed or failed the VBT?
The VBT results are sent to the Oral Board Unit at the Minneapolis Hiring Center. The Oral Board Unit will send you a "Notice of Results". This "Notice of Results" will indicate either an eligible (pass) or ineligible (fail). You should receive your Notice of Results within 4-6 weeks from the date of the interview.
8. How long are the VBT results good for?
The VBT results are good for 3 years if the applicant was rated eligible. If an applicant received a rating of ineligible, you cannot be considered for a CBP Officer for one year from the date of the VBT.
If you have additional questions in regards to the VBT process, contact us at our e-mail address of nhc-oralboard.medinfo@dhs.gov. You may call during normal business hours at (612) 467-7038. Because of the volume of inquiries received, you may have to leave a message and wait for a return call, so we strongly encourage you to contact us by email.

You think you failed the VBT? You don't know?
If you did, eventually everyone will get on the same page and your BI will stop.
Sometimes different offices are slow to communicate with one another, and things like BI's continue on well after people drop out/are removed from the process. It's fairly common overall.

I know that most police departments as well as Customs require that one has normal color vision. I have heard of cases, at least in Michigan, that despite being color blind, if one is able to pass a D-15 Farnsworth test instead of the normal color dot number test (I can't remember the name) that that is acceptable for employment. Does anyone know if Customs would make such an exception?
Yes, I agree! Smart move buddy! I wish you the best and maybe if I ever get called we can end up in NYC or NJ together...in like 10 yrs!! LOL

Do you get any clue when you're background has been sent off to the higher ups? My BI hoped to send it in at the end of last week so sometime soon someone more important than him should be making a decision right?
I've cleared backgrounds for Ca. Dept. of Corr. a while back, and nothing has changed since except a year a half of the same ol same ol.
And I was under the impression my BI doesn't exactly make the final decision, just submits his paperwork.
Only thing I can keep doing is checking CASS right?
Congrats!
I really need mine to take ~4 months too. :)

The background investigation is mostly based on the luck of the draw. Some people like me have it completed in 2-3 months and others on the forum wait over a year. Some depends on how complicated your past is and if it entails one or multiple areas. And it also depends on what adjudicator you get to review everything. Some are quick and others seem to be slow and careless. Just hope your file is not "lost" in a pile of folders or behind a desk. Other than hoping and praying all you can do is wait. After 8 months you should call to make sure it is not lost, but before 8 months it's just a waiting game.
You are correct about your background investigator who did the interview. All they do is collect and report the facts they found, and submit it for adjudication. The investigator has no say over if you pass or fail.

I don't mean to fan any flames that were sparked a few threads back, but there was the question of whether or not to divulge past indiscretions to a BI if there was a chance the BI wouldn't find it. I found an interesting website.
www.securityclearances.org
They are a law firm that specializes in helping people appeal negative decisions from adjudicators. This quote is from their homepage:
"WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW ABOUT SECURITY CLEARANCES
The absolute most important thing to know about security clearance cases is that “integrity” is everything. No matter how big or small the “behavior” at issue may be – the government must believe that you can be trusted to tell the truth, most significantly when to be honest could adversely impact you, your job and your position. Almost any behavior can be mitigated. Integrity once lost, however, is extremely difficult to recover."
"...integrity is everything." If I had to chose between someone who freely admits they made a mistake and one who swept it under the rug because they felt it wouldn't be found, I would say the one who demonstrated honesty would have integrity. But maybe I don't understand the definition of integrity.

TO- Tentative Offer- After you've taken you test and past your test you receive a TO. The better you're score sooner you get one.
NOR- Notice of results: Your test score...the letter usually contains your application id and port you selected when applying.
EOD- Entrance on Duty: Your first day on the job. You spend about 3 weeks at the port before being shipped to FLETC.

I got the call today for Sault Ste Marie Michigan today. I had to turn it down because I can't afford to make the move up there. I was excited to get the call but disappointed for it to be for there. I was hoping for Detroit like many Michigan area people, or even Port Huron if offered.
The lady that called was really helpfull. She told me because of the many applicants and the economy in Michigan, Detroit/Port Huron are not available due to recent hirings and no funding at the time. The bad thing is she said there is several positions available in the Soo and people have been passing on them. So these positions will keep cycling until they are filled and keep knocking us out of the running for Detroit/Port Huron until there are filled. I just hope there are people that are in the situation to move up there and take advantage of it. The funny thing I heard from officers in Detroit is that it is a hard port to get, older officers go there to retire because they are so slow up there.
So people looking for a Michigan Port that have not been called yet, expect an offer for the Soo.
______
--RE: Openings at MI POE's: I also have information from a reliable source regarding the openings PH and Detroit and was also told they needed to fill the SOO. What is crazy about all of this is I know SEVERAL Port Huron Officers that want to transfer to the SOO and get out of Port Huron. They are not being allowed to right now, for whatever reason. It is very frustrating for them, as well as you guys applying for MI POE's. If you can swing it, take the offer to the SOO and when you are off of your probationary period and/or reach a GS-11, do a swap with one of the Port Huron guys wanting to get back to the SOO. You may be there for a couple years but it may be worth it in the end. I know people who work/have worked in the SOO- from what I hear it's a nice Port and cost of living is SUPER cheap.

I’ve made a new friend today at TSU. Turns out they are very laid back and nice people. If I was to call them 9 am sharp this morning I would have been offered Norfolk, VA. Instead I’m #1 on the list for Dulles. Apparently they have 12 spots open and approved; all they are waiting for is for the Headquarters to release the funds. Who else is waiting for VA here? If you have moved or otherwise need to request a new interview location, you will need to contact the Oral Board unit at 612-467-7038.

I tested in Jan. 09 and since then have been sent to TSU. Now I am just waiting for an open position. It seems Florida (though out) has a lack of training slots.

I turn 37 In August but take my exam this April 28th. The port I am applying for does their all their own hiring (except for the exam.) I understand they want more local people because of the high turnover. (sw border)
From reading here I get my TO after the exam, should that hold me over and keep me eligible past my 37th Bday. I have read so many conflicting comments on this?
Can anyone shed some light on this. Im trying to keep motivated here.

I think there is a way that they pick females out of the bunch because if headquarters needs females there must be a way or method they use and lets say 10 males with a higher score are in front of that female they wont offer all those 10 males positions if headquarters asks for or that port is in need for females...it won't make sense. because majority of the people who apply for LE positions are males there are hardly females, and some ports need more female cause they have a lot of men.

your score and the demand for the POE you applied for constitutes a TO, the higher your score the better i'm not sure if everyone gets a TO they try to fill up the ports as best as headquarters and funding can provide

Hey I am in the same boat as you other Florida guys, I tested on 12/09/08 in Miami, got an 88 and now I am waiting for something to happen. I did get an email in March saying something about they are changing the codes for Florida and I would have to choose between one of two: the south Florida sector or the the rest of the state. I chose south Florida and they emailed me a new NOR. Did you guys get the same thing?
No, under the announcement I applied South Florida (key west, Miami) was already specificed besides through out Florida which is everything else. I applied for though-out Florida.

In the initial application there's a question that essentially asks if you're female and if you'd consider applying for "female-only" openings.
That's not how it's worded, but it's the gist of it.

That would be my guess. I really haven't paid much attention to it since it doesn't apply to me.
I don't know in a practical sense how much meaning that question has. I haven't really seen where CBP has been short-staffed with females, so I wonder just how often such a list would come into play?

I had not heard anything since my background in August and I have not completed anything else. I contacted them to see what was up and they said I was deactivated since I had not attend the VBT. However, I was never notified of when to attend the VBT. Which was a mistake on their part. So I had to reactivate it in Jan but still have not heard anything since then.

ok got ya first off a lot of people let their application go they dont check up on it and you have to stay on top of your process if you did your BI back in august you should of called in december or check cass...shoulda coulda woulda anyway you petty much started all over it you reactivated when you reapplied why you reapply under this announcement it asks you if you want to keep your old score, if you don't and you want to get a higher score then you test all over again but right now you have to wait until the announcement close and get you NOR again and TO again then you start your Quals all over except your BI

Almost never to fairly often.
The answer depends on where one works and what one does.
In a small, slow port one might almost never see a court appearance...especially if he was looking to avoid one. In a larger port, one might see court fairly often.

Is very rare. To learn the true story of CBP click on the first post of this thread. .. They tell the true story. One CBP does not make arrests. Basically you are nothing more then TSA with a gun. And no it is not different on the Southern Border . See the aformentioned posts. A car rolls up {endless line} you send to secondary. The people get out. You find the dope. They comply . You pat down. They say it is not there dope. Call Agents. And that is it. You mostly do what a technician in any PD does . You count or wgh the dope . Test it etc. While the Agents or Locals do all the interviewing etc.
Remember other then an immdiate . Everything is done with Supervisor approval. And we still only do pat downs for merchandise .

I only lurk on this forum but this post has compelled me to throw in my two cents. Where you work may be different and it should be known that every POE probably has a different way of doing things. However, at my Southern Border POE, if I am the seizing officer on a dope load, It is I as the CBPO who puts the violator in the cell and places him under arrest.
And it is not uncommon, and more towards the regular, for me to see 2-3 subpoenas a month. Granted most of these tend to plead out before trial.
As for patdowns, as you say anything more than an immediate does require Supervisor approval. I am curious as to whether that creates an issue at your port. If I am able to articulate a reason there is no hindrance for me to be able to bring a person(s) into the office for a full patdown.

I'm not too sure what type of federal employment you have since your previous posts only say you work for CBP, but I think you are wrong about a CBPO only being TSA with a gun. A lot of things have changed since this forum was started, and I was under the impression a CBPO was a sworn federal officer with arrest power to enforce federal law.
And if you are currently in Customs it doesn’t seem like you enjoy your job if all you do is “clerking with a gun (http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1576704#post1576704)”, feel you “have to get out of CBP somehow someway (http://http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1576704#post1576704)”, “will stick it out here a few more years (http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1681799#post1681799)”, and want to work for FPS, local or state police at the age of 52.
But if I am wrong, I will admit I am wrong. I'm a just an applicant for a CBPO position so I will not pretending like I know everything. And if you are a CBPO, I would like to know why you don't like the job. Maybe I would have to rethink my career path. I still have time only being 26 years old.
merlin436
04-19-2009, 12:09 PM
IAs I said...it mostly depends on location and port management.
To say the CBPO's do not make arrests is highly disingenuous. It's far more accurate to say we seldom do "formal" arrests. Popping a trunk and finding 30 pounds of M.J., cuffing up people, securing them in a holding area and "detaining" them while seeking ICE/State/Locals for ultimate prosecution amounts to an arrest...by just about any reasonable definition of the word.
It's irrelevant to who cuts the formal paperwork.

Any help from current CBPO's is appreciated.

I NEED HELP!! plz : ). I'm tryin to get my e qip stuff squared away abd I see on the checklist i need to burn 2 complete copies of e qip. Is that accurate? All 60 pages times 2 and with my luck I'll be out of ink on page 59 LOL.
First, NO. There is a signiture page that you print out, sign and send in. Everything else is sent electronicly.
Second, save a copy of your entire SF86, you may or may not need it later. It's a good thing to keep around for finding info you may have lost.
That is a good link robeans provided. I went in and selected each plan and immediately ruled out those that had definite deal breakers in them. In the end I went with BC/BS because I have had them before and have never had any problems with them, but that is what works for me. As long as you know what plan code you want when you go in they will give you the forms to fill out the important stuff is which plan code.

I suggest you start looking for insurance plans now,

As for pre-employment forms you should look them over and if you like you can start to fill them out, but it would be a waist of ink to print them out because there is a starter packet waiting for you with the same exact forms on your EOD at JFK.
Hello Everyone,
As most of you all have done, i too have been lurking in the shadows probably for the last 50 pages.
Just as a little intro to what i have been going through.
I applied last Aug 08, and outta nowhere i received a package with the TO letter this March 09 and To be completely honest i figured i was out of the running. Well i turned in my prelim paper work at the end of March, and have completed the physical/medical, drug screen and today (Sunday) i went to take the VBT.
I was pretty nervous about the VBT, I kinda expected to see what was on there but i still was nervous, i dont think i did very well, but you never know. I at least tried to adjust and give it my best shot all though it may have not been enough. We will see.

Yes i noticed that to, but im assuming the booklet is a little older. So the actual single paper that tells you the checklist I think would be more up to date.
yeah I thought that as well, but I'll still send in the rest just in case. I'd imagine the residency requirement page would be important. If they don't need the extra paperwork hopefully they'll just toss it.

These guys who think it is their duty to harass Border Patrol Agents are nothing more then scumbags. You can tell how they feel when one guy at the beginning of the video says directly to a BPA, “Why don’t you get a real job?”
On HonorFirst (http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=borderpatrol&msg=42692.43) we were talking about another guy who tried this, but the BPAs called the Highway Patrol who forcefully extracted him from the vehicle and hailed him off to jail. Sounds like the BP are not playing around anymore with this stuff. Of course he posts a video on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUzd7G875Hc) saying a different story, but in the discussion on HonorFirst an email from a BPA (http://forums.delphiforums.com/borderpatrol/messages?msg=42692.45) has been posted with a description of what actually happened. They are two completely different stories, but I am trusting the BP account of what happened.

I also applied in Aug 08 and am waiting for E TX. I've been in TSU since Dec of 08. The last EOD calls this geo pref went out in early Jan (So hopefully more are coming soon) and the begining of the TSU line starts somewhere around early to mid Nov 08. Dependig on how fast you clear the steps you might have a little wait when you get to TSU.

Exactly, we do not need the GRAMMAR Police. We're in a informal atmosphere having informal conversations. Everyone here are busy working people and do not have the time to read and reread post to make sure they're grammatically correct. Of course under different conditions they would be more careful about the way they type. For example, the way I talk to my friends will not be the same way I would talk on an interview. Lets all just relax and appreciate the help we're getting from each other and stop trying to make people feel bad over some grammar and spelling.

When you think of it, all anybody has to judge us with on this board is our writing.(content, spelling, grammar, etc.) When we write less than optimal, we look less than optimal.
As far as the job goes...yeah, a lot of the writing styles written here would not go over well on Uncle Sugar's dime. If you ask me, practice doing things the best way you can. Habits(both good and bad) tend to carry over both ways from work time and personal time, especially if you're tired or stressed.

It's a good thing for everyone, the applicants, CBP, DHS, and the country. This will ensure applicants study hard and try their hardest to obtain the highest score possible. Application of the trickle down theory will ultimately benefit CBP's salary payers and the targeted group CBP is intended to benefit and protect, the taxpayers.

Since I have not worked in a yr & half I'm banking on getting this job. I'm in a situation where I don't kno if I should get a job because of the fact the my last step is the B.I. I don't think it would be professional to find a job & quit after only a few weeks. I am ready to start working again, hopefully soon.

Don't just let your application wonder around in that office, occasionally call and check-up on it remember those people are not working on one applicant they have thousands. Keep an eye on YOUR stuff no one will do it for you!

Was there a spelling portion on the exam (don't answer) and how did you manage to pass it? I'm starting to think you are misspelling on purpose because it truly takes effort to accomplish what you continuously do.

Maybe you should read posts more clearly without worrying about grammar and spelling. Or you could always do a little research on the people you are talking to.
I’m guessing she was referring to the fact that they had similar dialects and mannerisms. But of course that is only assuming.
I'm actually a female but it's ok I think I understand...

I don't see the relevancy of each poster's gender since this thread's purpose is for the exchanging of information regarding the application process. It is not necessary to research the specifics of posters when the contents of their posts are indicative of their education/job skills/work experience/demeanor/personality.

I think if you research previous posts of a poster you can get a good idea of where exactly the person is in the hiring process. Especially if they do not have a signature. You can also get a good idea on what type of person they are, and if they actually know what they are talking about. I have also found it helpful to review a person’s previous posts if I am trying to answer a question they have posted.

I don't need or want a mental visual image of anyone from this forum, male or female. Reading the contents of the poster is sufficient to construct a basic foundation for a personality diagnosis.
Was there a spelling portion on the exam (don't answer) and how did you manage to pass it? I'm starting to think you are misspelling on purpose because it truly takes effort to accomplish what you continuously do.
Can we please please please please please just chill out with the grammar and spelling. There is no reason to kill the atmosphere of the forum by trying to insult other people. We are here to HELP each other not throw around insults.
Someone spoke about how she reacted to being corrected, but if you have to insult someone just to correct them then you leave her no choice. Come on guys and girls, lets keep things nice.

Yes the security expires. You should be reinvestigated every 5 years.

TPA I have a question what's the difference between reactivation and reapplying?
From what I have read of the forums, reactivation is when you drop out of the hiring process and restart where you left off. And reapplying is when you drop out of the hiring process and start from the beginning.
I am just a first-time applicant so this is just what I have read online. So if someone who has a more specific explanation, or can clarify, please do.

Need to get mean so I can be prepared to search those bags and deport the illegals. Making the illegals return on the same flight back to their country of origin without entering American soil is what I'm looking forward to.

Yes it will affect Homeland Security. They were just talking about that on the news and 50 million will come from how Homeland Security orders office supplies. I just they will be using Staples online. :)

they said with either it just puts you back in the inventory and pull by score it doesn't matter if you have everything cleared, if they pull you and everything is still active then you go straight to tsu but if some stuff has expired then you have to take those over. No one starts back where they left off.

I didn't see any on the thread over here. I had remembered seeing it being talked about over on the HonorFirst site. Besides, if you had called the hiring center I would trust what they said over a Internet post.

My adjucator called again today, she is going to clear my background. I still have to send her one more thing but she said that she was going to clear it, and that if I failed to send the information that she needed she would take away my clearance. so that is what is going on here. Anyone else waiting for MI, or in TSU for MI right now?

Director's award, there are two combination academic awards, a firearms one, a physical fitness one. I can't remember the specifics. There are a few subcategories to each one.

Question guys and girls, my CASS now shows:
4/15/2009 You have tentatively met the pre-employment requirements and your file is being reviewed. Once a final determination is made that all requirements have been met, you will be notified of the next steps.
Is there a different message when you are in TSU? How do you know you are in TSU?
