Can anyone tell me about the test? Is it the National Police Officer Selection Exam?
Thanks!

Just curious if you knew that although you would be considered a deputy sheriff, they do not do any patrol work since they consolidated with the city of Kansas City? To the best of my knowledge, the only thing that comes close to police work they do is serving arrest warrants and doing vehicle check points for tax purposes.
Other than that I'm not sure if they use the national test or not, but I highly doubt it as I never saw any department in the state use the national test (but it has been a couple years since I left the state).

Actually, WyCo Sheriff DOES have a road patrol now, consisting of a few deputies. They do the same type of patrol work like KCK officers do and patrol anywhere in KCK they want, since the whole county is incorporated, meaning everything is within a city limit. There are only 2 other cities in Wyandotte County (Bonner Springs & Edwardsville).
I believe WyCo SO used to send all of their deputies to the academy, but I've heard recently they are not sending the ones that work in the jail to the academy unless they go to the road or get promoted to sgt.
You might try Johnson County, KS. They still have to work in the jail, but have a little bigger road patrol. They have a new highway interdiction team, K9 unit and they're working on getting a commercial motor vehicle inspection team. Probably more opportunities at Johnson County....and better equipment/facilities.

I just graduated from KLETC yesterday, and we had two deputies from wyndott county there, one was a sgt. with the jail, and the other was going to be a road officer.

That appears to be the only time they're sending WyCo deputies to the academy now. They used to send them all there, but I guess they're saving money this way.
If you really want to be a cop, try a city so you won't get stuck in the jail.

i know that working for the jail would be good experience....so later on it would be easier for me to get hired with other departments.(i am not a certified officer) i was curious to see what the written test would be like. i have taken overland parks and passed, johnson county sheriffs...passed that one. i know that each department has a different written test.hopefully someone could give me some insight.

If I may interject something here about working in the jail first. By being a corrections officer or deputy, whatever you want to call it, you learn very quickly how to communicate with the inmates. communication is the key to working any job, but learning to communicate in the jail with the inmates teaches you some skills that you would not get starting work as a road deputy. I have had Sedgwick County Sheriff Gary Steed tell me that the best road deputies that he gets are the ones who have worked 2 to 3 years in the jail. If you can talk to the inmates in the jail and get results, you can talk to anyone on the street and get good results. Okay, I have had my say.

Excellent points!!
As for Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department, I worked with a guy a couple of years ago who was a supervisor there. He absolutely loved the department and the sheriff.

I recently started on as a reserve deputy with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office, and what is said here is true. They do all of their training for new deputies in house. After you are trained, you will work in the jail for several years before you get an opportunity to go to KLETC and become a sworn leo. There are many deputies who have been there 10+ years who are not sworn.
When I went into my interview for reserve deputy, they all but begged me to go full-time with them, but I politely declined. Working the jail doesn't bother me, but the fact that you are in a non-sworn position, does bother me. Also the fact that the pay is quite a bit less than other local agencies bothers me too. Honestly, the people there are great from what I can tell though, and everyone seems to enjoy working there
