Does anyone know how the hiring process is with the MCSO? I'm taking the written test Saturday, and kind of curious to what is all entailed. I know new deputies have to start in the jail first and work there way out, but for how long? Any advice or insight, much appreciated. thanks jwswisconsin
Well, I had an internship with them while I was in college and the deputies I spoke with said a min of 5-6 years but its all based on senority and how many people they need in each bureau (patrol, airport etc etc)....One deputy I spoke with said he know guys that been working the jail for 9-10 years and still trying to get out of the jail scene....GOOD LUCK with your exam
EDIT: Sorry, I don't know how there process works but if you call there office or google their website I'm sure you will find what you are looking for

Not sure about the hiring process, but I went through their academy for local police department in the Racine area. Expect to spend a good amount of time in the jail before being able to see the freeway or courts. A deputy came to my department due to the fact that he was still stuck in the jail after many years. I believe that when you go through the academy and if you are at the top of the class, you might get the opportunity to go straight to courts. I know more about the actual academy then the process; good luck!

I can't speak for MCSO, but Dane County works similarly. They tell their recruits to expect to spend 4-6 years in the jail before getting out on the road. But I know deputies that have made it in 3-4 years. It all depends on how well you do your assigned job and how badly you want it.

Also, from what I have heard is that the SO doesn't really have much of a patrol area/division. They don't have troopers in Milwaukee County, so the SO takes care of parts of the freeways, but between MPD, WAPD, Glendale, etc... the sheriff's don't do much patrol work.

It is my understanding that they no longer hire you as a Deputy and do not put you through their LE academy up front anymore. They now hire you as a Correctional Officer and all you get is the Jail Officer Academy. All existing Deputies in the Jail are grandfathered in and get to keep their status.

From what I know abou the MCSO process. You take a written test, interviews and a psyc/med screening. NO physcial agility test. Right now there are only hiring jailers. Supposedly there is no chance of going to the road because you would be classified as a jailer and not a patrol deputy. When MCSO hires for the road it is my understanding that you will have to apply again for the road. I would assume that if you are in good standing that you would have a better shot for the road. It stinks but if you really want to go out on patrol you would either have to wait a long time (years) for the sheriffs or you would need to apply for a local PD. Good Luck.

good luck becoming a deputy in milwaukee. im a CO in the jail now and the sheriff is going to layoff somewhere around 60 deputies next year. he plans to fill the jail with COs. he has said that he will not hire a deputy during his new term.

I'm a CO for the MCSD also. The department hasn't hired a deputy in more than 5 years. All they will hire is CO's as long as Clarke is in office. If you want to be a sworn officer my advice is this: Go to MPD like many of us.
