Does Budget do trailers? I know they rent box trucks and conversion vans.

Iceman,
I would call an 800 # and double check that. I always borrow my buddies Ford Windstar to move and I always move with a uhaul trailer. I have moved every Aug Since starting college in 2000.
My next peice of advice would be borrow somebodys vehicle a friend with a trailblazer, jimmy, tahoe, something along those lines Go to the local Uhaul rent your trailer then go home and unhook the trailer and place it on the explorer and be on your way....Always got to be thinking outside of the box.. Good luck.

Take it from someone who has moved plenty of times in the past 5-7 years (college and all). I have never had a worse experience with any business in my entire life. I needed to move across the country so I needed a hitch put on my SUV so I could pull a trailer. I used the online reservation method of obtaining the equipment at the times I needed. I then made sure to call an confirm my reservation with the local company. They could not confirm my reservation for 3 weeks. They then refused to order in the appropriate hitch for my vehicle.

I planned well in advance for the move and the equipment. After 3 solid months of being on the phone in conference call with the regional office and my local office I was able to kind of sort of get the equipment I needed. I will NEVER use U-haul again!!

I would suggest cancelling with U-haul and renting with another company.

UHaul rents poorly maintained vehicles.

I rented one 3 yrs ago to move. They rented it to me with no gas (barely made it to a gas station), and it broke down in heavy, heavy rush-hour traffic. Good times.

I'll never have anything to do with UHaul ever again.

No matter what trailer you rent check and double check those tires. On my last move I rented a car hauler and had a tire blow in NM and then had a bearing burn up, axle break, tire caught fire.....2 feet from the propane tank on my VW Camper..... 10 miles from my house in TX. Luckily some good ol' boys got me stopped and told me what was happening. I didn't notice the fire as it was behind the BIG truck and it didn't pull any differently. I probably would have noticed it when my bus blew up though!!!!!

Should have bought a Chevy, but we won't hold that against you, hahaha. I've moved from Wa to Ak and then from Ak to Wy with Uhaul with no problems. Then moved from Wy to Fl and had a flat on my car carrier, followed by a blown serpentine belt on the truck. Wasn't too happy with that trip, but they got someone out to fix both problems fairly quickly. I returned the favor with a busted pass window on the truck as I was trying to slim jim the door open after I locked the keys in.

I think Uhaul is one of the only rental agencies that will rent a trailer w/o one of their trucks having to be rented also. I say just borrow a friend's truck to pick it up and then slap it on the Explorer. Might run into trouble if something happens on the road, but what other options do you have?

Thanks for the great advice everyone! I would love to do the switch-a-roo and just pick up the trailer with another vehicle, but it won’t work once I arrive at my destination. I’ve found a family member who has been dying to take a road trip, and actually asked me if he could drive out there with me and stay a few days. Soooo… As long as I buy him a case of beer (AFTER the trip) and let him crash a few days at my place, it is all good. Hell of a weight off my shoulders. :)

I've always been a little torqued with UH because all their trailers say "Do Not Exceed 45 mph" on the fenders (in reverse, so you can read it in your sideview mirrors). Come on. Who in their right mind is going to rent a trailer to travel any distance and go no faster than 45 mph. You can't even legally go that slow on most of the Interstate system.

You know that it's purely there for legal liability reasons. 'Oh, the trailer disconnected and took out a busload of nuns? How fast were you traveling? 55 mph? I'm sorry, that violates your contractual agreement, removing us for any and all liability. What attorney would you like me to send your signed contract to?'
