I am applying for the State Police. My question is that they ask me how many times I was involved in theft. I was wondering if it would look bad if I reported 36 thefts with 25 of those being from my previous job? I was taking soda during my shift and not paying for them all the time Sometimes I took them and others I actually forgot to pay for. I am not sure of the actual number so I made a guess. I worked at that job for five years. All the other thefts were not of anything over one dollar

Of course it's going to look bad. Any theft is going to look bad at least 36 thefts is a pretty big hurdle to overcome since it shows a habitual behavior, especially in light of the fact that you say there are others that you committed which were under one dollar in value. And, lets be honest, you didn't 'forget' to pay for some of the sodas. When you take an item and don't make immediate payment for it, you made a conscious decision to do so. Play the "I forgot to pay" card with your background investgator and you may as well forget about making it in law enforcement. But since you've already displayed a habit towards theft, it's going to be a very difficult road for you anyway but best of luck.

those are some pretty HIGH numbers on paper, but the $$ amount does make a difference to a department. SO if you actually only took $36 worth of soda even though it was (gulp) 36 times then you might have some hope. You might need to wait several years and show that youve grown up and held responsible jobs without continuing the behavior stated. When i worked at a fast food restaurant between the ages of 16-18 i ate food without paying for iseveral years and admitted that to my BI. I passed backgrounds and have been cleared to be hired. BUT that was 14 yrs ago when i was a Juvi.
NOW if you would have LIED about taking sodas while at work then that would definitely RUIN your chances of becoming a LEO after you fail the polygraph.
Dont give up hope and dont try to lie about that to another dept.
