Hey everyone,

I'm working on becoming a police officer by the end of the year. I currently live in Reno, and applied to the local PD here and LVMPD. The problem is that housing prices have gotten out of control over the last few years, and although the pay is high for these departments, it would be difficult to buy a house on the salaries.

I've been considering moving to Colarado for awhile now, and the Fort Collins area looks really appealing to me. Anyone have any experience or knowledge of this department or the Larimer Sheriff's Department? I know it's a pretty low crime rate area, but I want to be in a decent size city with at least some action.

Fort Collins PD isn't hiring right now, but I might work for Reno or Las Vegas for a few years to get some experience and action, then try to get into Colorado later. Does that seem like a bad idea?

Thanks for your help! This is a great forum!

You need to do some research on depts, crime and population. Yes, FCPD is a good dept, but they are very very picky on whom they hire. They have a fairly busy dept, and a supportive community, hence their 100, 000 sq ft, $30,000, 000 new HQ. If you think house prices are expensive where you are, check out CO, you won't be happy.

I tried to get on as a reserve with the Larimer County Sheriff a few months back. They are VERY picky about who they hire and they have VERY high standards for their officers. Good Luck with your search. :)
