Well, here is my second qustion...

I know and understand that if you work for the MSHP you may be required to transfer anywhere in the state. I understand that, but I grew up in the Rolla area and I know that area the best. How much choice would I get of where I work at?

You get to pick three places.....and they will try to get you there...but you go to the needs of the Patrol....whether is's rural SE Missouri, NW Missouri, the Bootheel, or points in btwn.....

BUT.....It's been common practice not to send folks back to where they are from.....I am sure there are some exceptions.......but they would be rare.....

I have buddies that were not even from my hometown (went to college there) and they still can't get back there....for whatever reasons...

Thanks for the info!

I am exploring my options before I start seriously deciding on anything!

I am in Frankin County and I want to stay in Franklin, Crawford, Phelps, or Gasconade Couty. For those of you that don't know, all of these counties all border each other.

The way the Patrol operates....I just don't see that happening....at least with your initial assignment.....and it will be tough to get there after that.

I have quite a few friends that work for the Patrol.....and unless you get into Gaming or DDC somewhere down the line in your career.....they tend to assign you away from where you are from.

I have a buddy that I worked with on a local Sheriff's Dept. He left the area and went to counties South to work in a Drug TF for two years.....got on the Patrol and went to KC.....and that's where he has been for the last 8 years.....and he's tried like hell to get back up to where we are from and they will not let him do it.....

Good luck...

From what I understand is if you put troop C (St. Louis) you will get it. That might be as close to Rolla as you can get for now! I do know some Troopers that are from St. Louis that got St. Louis!

St Louis might be the exception...as they are hard up for Troopers. I know that St. Louis County will hire a Trooper in a minute....all they have to do is show up and say they are wanting to be hired....

Nothing like going from whatever the hell the Patrol is paying now to well over 40 a year....and not have to move.

Same thing happens in the KCMO area when Troopers are looking to go over to the KS side of the house......

I have also heard they will move you as far away from your hometown as possible so that you won't run into anybody you know. They want you to be fair and not cut your buddies a break if you stop them.

I've also heard they move you when they promote you so you won't be supervising your former shift partners.

I can sort of see the thing with promotion, but maybe just moving your zone, not completely moving you and having you relocate.

I grew up in the KC area on the Missouri side. I always wanted to be a MO trooper but other stuff panned out, and now I'm a KS trooper. I work the KC area and have never stopped anybody I went to school with. I stopped one girl whose name I recognized and later looked her up in my junior high year book. Turns out we went to junior high together but I didn't actually know her - just recongized the name.

What I'm getting at is it's really kind of stupid logic. I guess it would make more sense if you're from a small town, but being from the metro, it's like a needle in a hay stack.
