I am not a corrections officer, but I have been a police officer for over six years. The best advise I can give you at your age is to stay in school, get good grades and stay out of trouble. When you get into high school ask the guidance couselor if the local county jail or state prison has an explorer program. Continue to read about the job. When you graduate from high school I would strongly recommend either college or military or both. Good luck

One thing I wish I had done when I was younger was taken more advanced classes and/or college classes in high school (get dual credit for one class). I know your still young but it never hurts. If your looking at Federal Bureau of Prisons college degree will start you off as a GS-6 instead of a GS-5 (basically, without getting to into what the difference is, more money). It also looks good at other area jails.

David..I applaud you for looking ahead and planning your future. One thing I would suggest is reading as much about the field as you can, and try to talk to those who are COs as well. The Explorer program is a good choice. However, the most important advice I can give you is this:

Stay away from bad company and those who will lead you astray! Find positive people to spend time with. Do the best you can in school and get involved in sports and other activities. Also avoid the drugs and booze as well..there is no good to be found in either. Being 12, you more than likely have a clean slate, so keep it that way. If you stay focused, you can be whatever you want to be. Good Luck!

Well i am a co. And the job is pretty good. My advise as you get older is ask other co how they like the job. Though some will say bad things thats with any job though.Stay positive on youre goals in life, stay out of trouble.Remeber we watch the people who get in trouble who do drugs etc.Find out if any jails or prisons give tours if they do go on the tour.Remeber this enjoy high school do good stay out of trouble and nothing can stop you from youre goals in life.Good luck

Ya I took a tour of a small police station not a jail thought it was yesterday.
And thanks for your replies they help alot.I just seem to like this job because I have a large build I keep in shape and I have good speech skills.Im saving money for that book "Games inmates play" because alot of people reccomended it on the corrections forums.

Learn Spanish.

Valuable no matter what career choice you makes, but especially for LE/corrections.

I don;t think you will make a good jail guard. You write too well for that

But it is not too late to change. I suggest the following

1. Buy the movie "Slingblade". Learn how to talk like he talks and write like he talks
2. Drop out of school in the 7th grade
3. Eat nothing but fast food
4. Stop working out
5. have a rich fantasy life and make up a bunch of lies about how tough you are

Good luck

I respect jail guards

They have a hard job

I think they should get a big raise and extra vaction time because itis so stressful taking orders from inmates

I was a CO for 4 years, been a Cop for 5. Best advise I can give to you has already been said: School, staying out of trouble, learn spanish, etc.

Staying out of trouble is the big one.One bad decision can ruin your career, or chance of a career.

Additionally, learn all you can about your chosen field. Good luck.

sometimes its hard to tell jails from prisons as jails are housing state county and federal inmates for any length in time i know in the north east the county jails get a good amount of money ($50+ a day) for each person they house that isnt from thier county...

i would say learn as many languages as you can, join the military and STAY AWAY FROM DRUGS all of them...

If he was smart enough to speak many languages, then he would not have to settle for a CO job. I think he needs to set his sights much higher

MG although I have never replied you your moronic rantings before, I do find this comment highly offensive, there is no such thing as settling for a CO job for some it is a chosen career and like your choice as a D**k Head some of us enjoy and take pride in what we do like your choice to be a D**k Head

I find your Kurt Vonnegut symbol to be highly offensive and vulgar
