I am currently a college student majoring in Criminology who wants to get into LE after school. Anybody have an info on the airfoce reserves MP? I have worked two loss prevention jobs, both times craving more to do. How does it compare to the "standard" air force? How much of a time commitment is there after training? Is there enough time for me to go to school and do this at the same time? Id like to get some outsider info before I talk to a recruiter...

Heres some basic info about Security Forces: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Security_Forces
Youll only have to devote one weekend a month to training and your undeployable for 184 training days. So that means, it will be about two years before they can send your *** to the sandbox. Which im sure will be plenty of time for you to complete your degree.

That sounds pretty sweet. What kind of pay would be involved while i was training (if you know)?

You would get active duty pay while you were in Basic and Security Forces school. Then you would get reserve pay every month.
Heres an active duty pay chart: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/militarypaycharts/l/bl05enbasepay.htm
For enlisted it should be about $400-$500 a month.
Also, check this out: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/ma.htm
In the Navy, not only are you doing Military Police work, but you do Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection. There is also a $20,000 enlistment bonus for MA reserves right now.

Some of that information is correct and some of it is not. You will go through Air Force Basic Training and Security Forces Tech School. While conducting this training you will be paid at the military active duty rate. Enlisting as a reservist or guardsman you will usually enslit as an E-3. So you'll end up making around $1000/month. When you complete your training you will go back to your unit and will get paid based upon how many drill periods you do. Every four hours is considered one drill period and a typical drill weekend is four drill periods and usually works out to $200/weekend. However, there is no guarantee that you will not be deployed for 184 days or whatever. You are deployable as soon as you return to your unit. Will they do that to you, probably not, but remember you are at the need of the military now. It is a good experience and a great way to learn the basics. Be sure you are willing to make that kind of commitment before you go in because you may see the big sand box 3-4 times during your enlistment. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Also true in the USAF, you do a lot of Antiterrorism and Force Protection duties. Additionally, the USAF Security Forces (proper term) are turning more and more towards an Army infantry role especially in the sandbox. (detainee Operations as well as outside the wire patrolling and convoy operations)

Sorry about that. That info was from the Navy for Master-At-Arms. Maybe the Air Force has a different set of guidelines

"Light infantry" is what i've been told. DoD police assuming most LE and SF deploying all the time. I guess I'm popping smoke at a good time. You can't beat the benefits while active, but there is no job stability (as far as what job you will be doing and where). My 6 years active had its ups and downs, but overall good times.

The pay for the ANG based upon an E-3 rank (I'm pretty sure it's the same for the AF Reserves), which is the typical starting rank of a non-prior enlistee is as follows: $187.61 per drill weekend, $1,501.00 per month while in BMT and Tech School. The sign up bonus for the ANG if you do not choose the $20,000 student loan repayment is $15,000
Basic training is 6 1/2 weeks, then tech school for Air Force security forces is 10 weeks 1 day all at Lackland AFB in TX. It's a good stepping stone for a career in law enforcement, however you must be okay with the high possibility of being deployed to Iraq. The advantage of being an MP in the Air Force as opposed to the Marines or Army is you wouldn't normally be sent to the front lines. After training the committment is 1 weekend a month and an additional 2 weeks out of the year. The committment is 6 years. The job description does not differ from active duty Air Force.

How did you come up with the $400-$500 a month? According to that chart, which is outdated by the way, the active duty pay for an E-3 under 2 yrs experience is $1456.20/month. For the Air Force it is now $1501.00/month.

Thats the ball park figure I was told by a Navy Recruiter for total compensation for the one weekend a month.

That is correct SR-25. The pay would be between $400 and $500 per month if one is a full-time student. I didn't think of that. It would also be an additional $350 if one got the kicker.
