Tell me about TCLEOSE.

What do you have to do to get this certification? Do you go to an acadamy and obtain this like our MCOLES?

Just looking for some info please.

Thanks

Depends on if you are certified in another state and TCLEOSE accepts you to challenge the test. If your are not qualified to challenge you must complete an academy.

If you are certified in another state, TCLEOSE will allow you 3 opportunities to challenge and pass the test. If you fail to pass the test on your 3rd attempt, you will be required to attend a Tx. police academy.

I was fortunate enough to challenge and pass the test on my first attempt. Good luck, the test is not a cake walk.

I've been looking at some practice exams on the net. Are these ???'s really on there such as. Minimum standards for ammunition rounds used for qualification or statistics on how many active law enforcement licenses there are in texas......these questions seem ridiculous! And if so...how did any of you pass this crap... I haven't taken it yet, but man...some of these questions seem crazy, and a bunch of crap no one would really need to know.

I have outlined the entire TCLEOSE requirements much like I did in CA so that you can easily study for the test and I also have a trainer on there who formerly ran the Victoria College site and now has gone private. Check it out.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I've been an officer nine years in Illinois and am going to challenge the test in July. I usualy test good and have a lot of comman sense so I figured that and my experience would get me by with a little study. But when I looked at some of the practice tests, the questions seemed a little strange. Definately alot of the practice ones I came across couldn't be answered with a good comman sense answer...seems like they want you to memorize law books or something. I don't wann be a texas lawyer, i wanna be a Texas officer :) I also found the sight www.tletca.org which has a lot of good stuff.

When you start studying the notes as I have them laid out you'll notice that a lot of the different levels in each crime are the same so it is not nearly as daunting as it seems at first. I rewrote each of the codes into regular English so you don't have to have passed the bar exam to understand them.

I'm in the process with a suburban department right north of Dallas right now. I love living here, though the heat can get a bit harsh and the water restrictions suck right now.

I know when I took that tcleose test...it was like I walked into the "twilight zone"...the questions didn't seem anything like what I had studied in the academy, however I did take alot of practice test off of the victoria web site and the odessa web site and I only had about a handful of questions that were almost the same wording, just remember most of the time there is always 1 wrong answer and from there its just a process of elimination. At least you will get your results soon after and not have to wait about 2-4 weeks for your grade like they used to do. When it was my turn to get my grade the dang computer went down..that was one of the longest 15min of my life, I was just glad I passed the first time around. I wish you the best of luck!!

I studied so much, I finished before everyone in the room; everyone thought I failed cause I finished so fast, but it turned out I scored higher than everyone else that tested with me.

google search "practice tcleose"

The Victoria College web site should be the first to pop up. That has the best study material I have found.

the college sites can be helpful for teaching you how the questions are asked, but be warned, they are not always correct answers. We have found a few questions on both Victoria, and Odessa Colleges site that are incorrect, or outdated.

What do you need to do to keep yoru TCLEOSE active. I got my cert in feb and havent really started to look for a job yet. Is there certain courses i can take to keep my cert from expiring at the two year mark. Im a leo in louisiana and got my tcleose certification for an upcoming move to tx. That move may be a lil longer then expected though. Any help?

I would go under the Tcleose web site and it will tell you everything you need to know on keeping up your license..I hope that helps, I know you can even sign up and take on line courses to keep up your hours however there are some classes you have to be in a class setting.

Yep, just took mine a little over a month ago (Dallas) and I distinctly remember a question regarding the # of rounds fired and from what ranges during the AUTOMATIC weapon course of fire. Maybe someday I'll make TAC and can put this knowledge to some use...

pkagel

Now that has to be the most useless question ever. What do they think that the course of fire has to do with being a cop. Another one Bryan posed was

What is the first rung on the use of force continuum...?
officer presence
command presence
police presence
professional presence

This question doesn't test a student's knowledge, it checks their ability to memorize. I was quite amazed by the difference when I was in the Navy. I went to Nuke school where it was all about memorization and did ok and then to Nuke prototype school where it was all about putting the theory you learned in Nuke school into practice. We had quite a few guys drop because they couldn't think past what was written on the page and couldn't understand broad concepts. They could memorize a book if need be but couldn't tell you why any of the characters, in it, did anything.

that question would also be outdated, since no one uses it like a progression of steps anymore.

i took it in '96 and the questions were more law related, or they asked questions like, "what would make better cover, a mailing drop box, or a shrub?" i remember a cover and concealment question. but i'm sure it's changed some in 10 years.

pkagel

It's still listed as a TCLEOSE objective and although each of the answers mean essentially the same thing the correct answer IAW TCLEOSE is "Professional Presence." I think the question, if written properly, would list all the force options and have you choose the first on the ladder and not try to confuse the issue with tricky wording.

I don't think much has changed on that test...I remember that same question on my test, and I took it less than 2yrs ago.

I know that anyone with previous experience can challenge the test, but does anyone know the requirements to see if i qualify to challenge the test and how do I go about doing it. I have contacted TCLEOSE, but no response yet. I have a BS in Criminal Justice, but cannot find anyone to hire me to go through an academy. So I was wondering if I can challenge the test or if anyone knows. If I can't I guess i will go through an outside academy, thanks

All necessary information can be found on the http://www.tcleose.state.tx.us/.

However to make things quick TCLEOSE Rule $217.1 (g)
(g) A person must successfully complete the minimum training required for the license sought:
(1) training for the peace officer license consists of:
(A) the current basic peace officer course; or
(B) successful completion of a commission recognized, POST
developed, basic law enforcement training course, to include:
(i) out of state licensure or certification; and
(ii) submission of the current eligibility application and fee; or
(C) as an alternative to the current basic peace officer course taken at a licensed academy, the commission may approve an academic alternative
program that is part of a degree plan program and consists of the
commission-approved transfer curriculum, the commission-approved
peace officer sequence courses, and after September 1, 2003, at least an
associates degree;

Having a degree in Criminal Justice is not enough to take the TCLEOSE test.
However if the school you earned your degree from taught the TCLEOSE basic curriculum (Tx Law, Defensive tactics, Firearms, EVOC driving, etc) as part of you degree plan you might be eligible. check with your school to find out if your degree qualified. My guess is anyone who graduated with such a degree would know if theirs qualified.

What happens when you "Challange" a test. Basically telling texas, Forget that, I know my stuff?

Or they give you somthing much more different than regular TCLOSE

Challenging the test means that the state looks over your police training and experience, and if they are similar to Texas' training, you get to sit for the written licensing exam without having to complete a police academy. It's basically an equivalency of training thing. I'm hoping to challenge the test within the next week or so.

Some agencies like HCSO and HPD make you go through an Accelerated academy even though you are state TCLEOSE certified. So you can learn department procedures, local ordinance and learn thier standards for patrol. Smaller agencies will put you on patrol as soon as your hired.
