As I pull in behind someone my seatbelt comes off. I'm ready to get out of the car quickly if need be.

I am not all that familiar with the lawsuits against ford for the car fires from rear-end crashes.

I'd like to know what you guys/gals do when you are on the side of the road for a bit. Seatbelt on or off. I am NOT talking about when writing a citation or other traffic enforcement type stuff.

Do you wear your seatbelt when you are behind someone waiting for a wrecker?

I wonder if you'd be better off with your seatbelt on while you are stopped behind a car on the interstate waiting for the wrecker, or would you be better off just keeping it unbuckled. I'm worried about the cars that come up and hit you in the rear.

Any comments or what you do/recommend would be appreciated.

When I'm on a traffic stop my seatbelt stays off.
When I'm behind a broke-down motorist on the interstate and I'm just waiting for a wrecker to get there, I make sure my wheels are canted in case a car hits me from the rear, but I normally don't put my seatbelt back on.

When my overheads are on, my belt is off (except pursuits). This way if I need to exit quickly I can. I usually leave the door open a crack so I dont have to fiddle with the handle if someone exits in a hurry.

Just my tactics, I also do not know about the lawsuits.

to solve that problem, i don't get back in the car once i've gotten out until the stop is over. if you were a turd with a cop sitting behind you, how much more likely would you be to do something if the cop was sitting in his/her car with the door shut? what about the cop standing on the pasenger side of his car watching every move you make?

When Im Patrolling, The Belt Is Off, Its Just Me. It Hate It Getting Hooked On Equipment, And I Work In An Area With Lots Of Jump And Runs.

I've long said if they find me shot on a traffic stop it ain't gonna be in the driver's seat!
Wear it while driving (state law/dept. policy) but not ever when stopped.

In my rural area, I'd generally be looking up at the car from down an embankment. :)
