I'm in the process of applying for sheriff for Suffolk County . anyone here a jail officer or correction officer ? . if so, what's the salary ? is it equal status with police?

I don't know what the salary is. A dispatcher in my dept left us for the SCSD; he loves it, makes good money, and there is plenty of overtime. I am not sure which jail he works in, but it is never a dull moment there.

Sheriff's Deputies in Mass are corrections officers, that's pretty much it. They do not do any traffic enforcement, do not respond to any calls, etc.

Unfortunate really, as deputies do so much more in the other 49 states.

In no way are deputies of equal status in the eyes of most police officers in Mass, especially the State Police. It's sad, but most would say that anyone working for a sheriff's office is a wannabe fake cop and is looked upon with contempt. Hopefully this will change some day, but right now it takes someone with thick skin to be a deputy. Good luck.

glad that is only 1 state, but most of the original 13 states, the sheriff has limited functions, but serves the purpose for courts and jails and serving legal process.

Now, in Florida for example, deputies are the balls. ;)

All i know its the top paying in the country. They make more in the academy than more officer's make with 7-10 years experience make any place else. I can get you all the pay infomation you need I have a friend of mine that works for SCPD.

You're thinking of Suffolk County New York (Long Island).
