NYPD Exam

Hey everyone. I was just curious if anyone out there knows about any study guides or websites to prepare for the NYPD entrance exam. I am scheduled to take it in July and I live out of state in North Carolina so there is no way I can attend the study sessions that they offer in your city. I downloaded the one from their website but would like to further prepare myself. I have wanted to be an NYPD officer since I was 17 so this is something I want to be over prepared for so I have a better chance of passing. I don’t have a college degree yet but I have 7 years of military service under my belt. Anyone have any advice/info about this? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly I took the exam without studying for it and I got a 98 it's really not that hard of a test just read the question understand and put your answer -- The study material in my opinion is a waste of money

Thanks for the reply. A 98 is not too shabby. How many questions were on it? How long did it take? I will be coming in from out of state to take it so I need to plan accordingly. I don’t think I am that big of an idiot..lol. so I am pretty sure I wont fail it, I just want to be prepared and get the best score I can. How do they handle candidates that pass the test (i.e. starting the background, physical fitness test, polygraph, etc.)? Do they go by the test scores or do they just start processing everyone that passes?

You will pass the test, its not hard. but looking down the road at the Police Academy, here is my opinion.

Since You Have prior military,

The 2nd day of the NYPD Academy at orientation, they will ask for
Company Sergeant Volunteers. Stand up and take the position. Its not hard to do, its not like the Marine Corps. If you are Company SGT., you will get to pick what precinct you go to, well, at least a top 3 choice. If you know a Captain or higher, then don't volunteer, you will get your pick anyway.

You passed the ASVAB and got into the Corps, so your all set, no need to study.

Would this be recommended for someone without prior military? I was a Cadet in the Civil Air Patrol and an Officer in the Balto. Co. Police Explorers. WOuld this benefit me as well?

...and how exactly do you survive in NY on 25K per year (before taxes)..On another board, an NYPD P/O stopped a car and is was a recruit in the school. The recruit showed the P/O his check for $600.00 take home for 2 weeks..Although now they will give you a 10K raise if you give back 10 vacation days and 6 holidays for the 1st 5 1/2 yrs..

i know some one who went to ny to take the test for nypd they said the pay started out at 20-25,000 and then they said to him but you will qualify for public assistance.... he was very shocked

i dont know why you would work and put your life in harms way to be on public assistance

I have a cousin who is in the NYPD right now, I think it's his second year already and he is making $38,000 or so... he said in due time the salary will climb back to what it was before.... just takes the city pulling its head out of its ***** and running a competent budget...

that's his word, not mine...

Before I join the Police Dept. there I plan on using my savings to buy a 2 or 3 family house in Brooklyn and rent them out to help with the low pay
