View Full Version : Not Drunk: But Stopped for DUI All the Time

I had to share this lady's quote:
Posted by Del Star:
My husband gets stopped on the average of 3 times every two weeks. Of course he's on the road a lot.
He has NEVER taken a drink but has been turned in many times for drunk driving ....
One time the police officer pulled him over and when my husband asked him what he had done wrong....the police officer said... "Oh, you were called in for drunk driving and when I saw who it was I knew you weren't drunk but the people who called you in followed me so I had to pull you over."
Drunk driving is the usual cause... he drives from side to side in his lane. Scares the dickens out of me...LOL but he gets stopped for other little nuances too. To me, it would totally destroy me to see the blue lights come on behind me. To him, it's a chance to visit with the police officer (he knows them all now). He doesn't get tickets....just stopped.
One night we were coming home in seperate cars. He was behind me. I saw the blue lights come on and my heart sank.... then I realized they had pulled over another car... it took me about half a mile to realize it was my husband they pulled over as there were other cars on the highway....so, like the good little wife I am, I turned around and went back. As I pulled up on them I put down my window and asked if something was wrong. My husband said "No.. he just had a question about something" I replied "Oh Thank God. I thought you got stopped for drunk driving again."
Well, this was a brand new highway patrolman who didn't know either of us... My husband later said..."With friends like you........"
LOL

In the 5 years that I've been driving, I've only been pulled over once. This was when I accidentally only turned on my parking lights instead of my headlights and didn't realize it. The officer checked to make sure I wasn't drinking and then let me go without any citation. I understand why he pulled me over, and if I did such a thing on a regular basis, I would expect to be pulled over on a regular basis (I would also expect to be pulled over regularly if I drove the way this lady's husband did).

My mother gets pulled over for drinking while driving too. Only she never drinks, she just can't drive worth a darn http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif When my sister or I are in the car with her she scares the hell out of us with the weaving. We always have to tell her to "Pick A Lane!"

Can you say DWO = driving while old? Often times drivers think think they have a drunk driver in front of them. They do the right thing and call it in. Sometimes it turns out the person is tired or old. Old folks are sent on their way, the sleepy drivers are awake after talking to the police. Best

My dh falls asleep while driving ALL the time. Well, he doesn't quite fall all the way to sleep because when his head starts nodding or when he starts driving like he is drunk (usually about 5 minutes after he gets off his cell phone), I get mad and take over the driving. I HATE doing all the driving. HE's the one who wants to go every place, but then he falls asleep. Once in a while he gets pulled over for killing reflectors, but it hasn't made an impression on him. He does not drink, so that's not the problem. Thankfully he works only a few blocks from home so he can make it home and when he has a longer trip he takes someone with him to drive, but whenever we go anywhere together just for "fun", especially in the afternoon or evening, I end up driving and I HATE it. Another reason I hate it is because I too am often very tired and fear falling asleep myself (I will pull over if that becomes too much of a problem though). Any suggestions? How do I get him to stay awake (or stay home)?

Thalia,
A sleepy motorist as every bit as dangerous as a drunk motorist. There is only one answer for being sleepy. SLEEP
Some folks (I am one of them) can take a 10 or 15 minute cat nap, and then be fine for hours. Others (such as my wife) needs at least an hour to nap when she is sleepy.
If he is getting enough sleep at night (who does?) then he may have a medical problem. You should have him see his MD! If he is not getting enough sleep at night, then he needs to take the obvious steps to do so.
I am very serious here about the dangers of a sleepy driver!

I have a bit to say about sleepy drivers...
I am not quite sure why I am about to share this, but what the heck...I have been in a weird mood http://www.officer.com/ubb/tongue.gif
About a month ago I was in a car accident. For my job (home health aide) I had to drive around all day. I had been having trouble sleeping for a couple of months and had actually gotten quite good at various methods of staying awake long enough to get home.
I would bounce up and down in my seat...repeatedly punch myself in the leg...turn on music I hated and crank down the window in the middle of winter. If all of that wasn't enough, I would pull over to the side and take a quick power nap. However the better I got at doing this, the less need I felt to make sure to get to bed early the night before. I was working 12 day stints with 2 days off only to do another 12 days.
A month ago I was so tired I was jumping at shadows on the road thinking they were animals. All I wanted was to get my son, get home and go to sleep. I never saw the dump truck that I rear ended. I could not answer any of the officers questions.
Q: Was I speeding?
A: I don't think so.
Q: Was the dump truck stopped when you hit it?
A: I don't know.
I thank God that I was wearing a seat belt. I thank God that the truck had the new safety bars that kept me from going underneath and coming out of the accident a lot shorter. I thank God that I did not have my son in the car. I am also grateful that I only came away with scrapes, bruises from the seat belt, and sprains.
Mostly I thank God that I rear ended a dump truck that barely felt me...instead of swerving into the other lane and killing a car load of kids...
Just because you usually get home okay...please, do not for one minute think that it can't happen to you. I was extremely fortunate, and won't ever forget that fact. I however was not the only lucky one...ever single car that passed me or that followed me, or that I followed for two months was lucky. That is a hell of a lot of people that are alive based on luck...
That is a hell of a lot of people's lives that I chose to take into my own hands because I had better things to do than sleep.

My jurisdiction is the CAPTITAL for "DWO" drivers. Its not uncommon to stop a motorist or to investigate a TC and find out that TEDDY ROOSEVELT was President when the driver was born!
People blame teenagers for most crashes and poor driving, but I'm telling you, the elderly have got them beat by a mile (sorry Don http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)
I completely support mandatory retesting for retirement age people to keep their licenses. Many of them are a hazard to us all. This is not just me being "insensitive" or (God forbid) committing "ageism". Just observations based on my last 10 years as a LEO.

I support this as well. I have seen my share of these problems, submitted my share of "driver re-evaluation" forms to DMV and have seen the horrible accidents caused by these folks.
What is really scary is to see the fossils behind the wheels of motorhomes, usually pulling another vehicle, or driving trucks pulling huge RVs.
Arizona is just insane. I moved over here and got my commercial driver's license in 2000. It expires in 2012. True, if I wish to keep it valid for commercial purposes I have to pass a physical every two years, but if I choose not to do that, the license is still good until 2012 for non commercial driving!
I pray that I will have the good sense to know when it is time to quit. But if I don't I pray that someone around me is caring enough to make me quit!

We do stationary breath testing all the time down here. We are rostered on for shifts to only do breath testing for alcohol, and now drug testing too. One shift in six hours we tested 800 drivers.
Down here though we do not need a reason to pull over a vehicle. We can stop it to just do a breath test or just to see if the driver has a licence or if the car is roadworthy.
