Hi, Does anyone here have any updated information regarding the TBTA exam 2065 for BTO. It's taking forever. Are they on a hiring freeze? Last I checked with DCAS they are at 799 but it's been like that for a few months now. Thanks.

Hey Roman, I'm in the 1000 - 1010 range. Do you know if there is a class in progress now? I have been checking DCAS like every other month and the number hasn't changed since last year. What is your list number? I hope they hire more before the list expires in 07. Thanks for the reply. Also does any one know what the PT requirements are for TBTA? Is there a 1.5 mile run, push ups, sit ups, etc... etc.... Thanks in advance.

jmoy i am higher up there in the early 1400's havent heard about any classes i did my year as a temp and got to know a lot of people that work there, as far as pt i heard its really nothing and the academy there is no pt you more of a classroom atmosphere, pretty much the penal code the fire training the toll collecting and the firearms. As far as i know there should be more classes a lot of bto's are retiring and there are sergeant and leutenant exams coming in the near future

Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority. They are part of the MTA but are not MTA Police. They patrol and collect revenues on MTA Bridges and Tunnels in NYC. Triborough, Verrazzano Bridge, Midtown Tunnel, Marine Park Bridge, Battery Tunnel, etc. etc. They are armed peace officers.

you have to be 18 to apply, then you cannot carry a gun. I NY you have to be atleast 21.

RomanArts
05-04-2006, 02:47 AM
Actually even though you are 18, you still do carry your gun like any other officer upon completion of academy and and your probationary period which is a total of 6 months from the date of hire. I was working with a kid that was 19 years old and he was carrying.

Finally got my orientation letter. Anyone know what I should be expecting that day? It will be 4 hours long. Will I be going through a physical, drugtest, and psych on the same day? or is it just a bunch of paperwork? The package didn't give much details. Thanks for any info.

Party people party people... well I was just browsing on the DCAs website and i see that there is another test for tbta officers on may 17, 2007 which means this list is coming to an end. Lets see what happends now.

salc0025
10-25-2006, 12:20 AM
TBTA officers are now Police Officers and not peace officers. A few years ago they passed a bill in NY that changed their status from Peace Officers to Police Officers. its pretty much the same bill that is trying to get passed to give NYC Correction Offices Police Officer status rather then their current Peace Officer status.

Dinosaur32
10-25-2006, 09:57 AM
Sorry salc0025, but TBTA Officers are still classified as Peace Officers. See Criminal Procedure Law, Section 2.10 (20).

Jayc6018
10-25-2006, 10:56 PM
Ok so TBTA officers can't execute warrants the job function of peace officers and police officers are pretty much the same.

Dinosaur32
10-25-2006, 11:40 PM
Jayc6018.......pretty much that is the difference between Peace and Police Officers, especially the larger uniformed agencies.

The guys that took exam 2065 have not all been hired. The list will expire once filing begins for the 2007 exam. I think they have hired about 5 to 7 classes off of that exam, thats about 100 to 140 guys. Im not sure of the actual number. There are alot of people who took that exam that havent and will not ever be called. I have been with them for about 4 years now and its an okay job.

you have to be 21 to purchase a firearm with a pistol permit. Law enforcement agencies that hire officers below 21 give those officers some sort of document that is presented to a firearms dealer that exempts you from federal age restriction laws. However you must be atleast 18 years old to be certified as a NYS Peace officer. NYS Courts and TBTA are the only 2 departments in NYS that allow officers under 20 years of age to carry firearms. What ****es me off (im 18 btw and plan on joining TBTA/Courts) is that im old enough to and will carry a firearm and have the authority, take someones civil liberties away, but I cant have a drink with the boys after a tough night if I wanted to because im not 21.

I'm in line for next exam for BTO.
Do they have to carry off duty like other officers?
I hope not.

Dinosaur32

These days almost no agencies mandate off duty carry, for the most part it is permissive.

Are BTOs on a 20 year retirement and due they take laterals?

nyc2235

I think its 20 years of service and at age 55. No laterals, MTAPD accept laterals.

They check your qualifications during your backround investigation, after you pass the exam, and they reach your list number, they give the BTO exam every 4 years.

The BTO uniform is the same as the NYPD uniform except their patches look like this http://www.patchdepartment.com/nyc/images/tbta-gib.jpg

and their shields look like this http://i.b5z.net/i/u/586639/i/TB-TA.gif

they carry glock 19's on duty, and off-duty they carry glock 26's.
here the union page, to see their dress uniforms go to "law enforcement awards" www.btoba.tripod.com

Any tips to help me study for the exam?
My neighbor whos a TBTA officer told me that it's just like the NYPD exam and to go to Barnes & Noble and just pick up a police exam study guide and it would do wonders, But I wanted to know if anybody who took the exam has any advice.

thanks again,

Ok I am currently in the hiring process. I am done with all my testing, did the physical , medical psych and the drug test. I also did the temp BTO for a year. The current academy is 13 weeks and it is located on Randalls Island. You are a New York state peace officer. You do carry on and off duty but off duty is not mandated. Now eventhough I am going through a hiring process I am still taking this 2007 exam. Its a small agency so you have to score high I took the test in 2003 scored 86% was number 14xx out of 11,000 and they called me in december for orientation and physical was jan 06. So good luck to everyone, if anyone has any questions just ask in this thread.

RomanArts
03-08-2007, 08:02 PM
NYC as far as the hiring process i am pretty much done. Whats happening now is some of the people that went through the process including me didnt make it into this feb 12th class now since we are done with everything but they already had 28 people for the class we are all just waiting till the next class which should be sometime this June 2007. What happend was some of our final background check wasnt completed in time because thats done by DCAS. UMM as far as the physical part its the trigger pull, tha stair climb and the .65 mile run which has to be completed in 7:30 min. The truth is I heard they are going to make this new physical for the new list much harder.

nyc2235
03-08-2007, 10:05 PM
any word on this new physical, please give us a heads up.

good luck by the way, and I wish you well in the academy.

"For the current list on the subject title, Exam No. 2065, the number of the last eligible certified was 1436, and the number of the last eligible appointed was 1079. A review indicates that 14, 758 applicants filed for this examination."

I heard froma couple of people its in june but noone knows the actual date. So I have no other choice but to sit back do my thing and wait till like mid may, thats whne I would call and try again to find something out. I just dont want to bother them that often. I answered 9. I am not sure if this is what they were exactly asking, but I put 9 because there were 6 ezpass lanes and 3 cash lanes. That was one I was confused on.

Also the other question I was confused on is what car would you most likely pull over for saftey reasons? (not sure of the exact wording) but I chose the motorcycle with a side car. Anyone else put these answers?

Yeah I put the motorcycle with the side car, it was the only logical answer lol

and btw there were 9 lanes visible. It was really 10 but that choice wasn't given, the 10th lane was in the opposite direction. at the end of the page on the left hand side

There were actually 3 cash lanes. You are probably thinking of the two black boxes that said cash only that were typed manually, but there were 3 lanes that had the original cash signs on them plus 6 lanes with ez-pass signs on them.

Exactly because they specifically asked the question "how many lanes accepts cars only"

The answer was 2.

There were 9 lanes all together with 3 being Cash and 6 being ez pass.

MTA test cheaters?

BY PETE DONOHUE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Monday, June 11th 2007, 4:00 AM

Some job seekers who took a Civil Service exam to be MTA security officers may have had a copy of the test in advance, the Daily News has learned.

The News obtained a copy of what appears to be the exam from an anonymous caller who alleged it was posted on the Internet before the test was administered May 19.

"If that test got out ahead of time, I would think they'd have to throw out the results," said Joseph Mauro, president of the Bridge and Tunnel Officers Benevolent Association. "It would be a major screwup."

The Citywide Administrative Services Department has launched a probe and alerted the Department of Investigation. The city administers Civil Service exams for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Bridge and tunnel officers are not police officers, but they do carry guns, enforce laws and make arrests. MTA Bridges and Tunnels has 787 officers. The officers, who also collect tolls, made more than 1,800 arrests last year, Mauro said.

Approximately 90 bridge and tunnel officers are hired a year. The current list of potential hires expires later this year, necessitating the May exam, officials said. The test was given at five city high schools, Citywide Administrative Services Department spokesman Mark Daly said.

Test administrators are supposed to collect all booklets after a test is given, the city department said. The department had planned to tinker with the questions in the May exam for future use but now may have to shelve that idea.

"The document forwarded to us today [by a News reporter] appears to be a copy of the test booklet," the department said in a statement Friday.

"We are reviewing this matter," the statement read. "At this juncture, we have no evidence that the integrity of the exam was compromised."

i already assumed this test was going to be thrown out and redone due to the printing error

which btw if you noticed the 2nd question that was supposed to be in error was printed the same exact way on the supplemental sheet as it was in the test booklet

but i think that reporter is full of **** and is sensationalizing this as he received a copy of the test book but no specification as to when he received it hence someone probably snagged a book after they took the test and sent it to the daily news then which means they are just spinning it like this to create controversy which wouldn't surprise me in the least bit

Probe Leak Of Copies of BTO Exam Booklet

By REUVEN BLAU
The city's testing agency is investigating how job applicants obtained copies of last month's Bridge and Tunnel Officer exam during the answer key protest period. "We are reviewing this matter and have notified the Inspector General of our agency," said Mark Daly, the spokesman for the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.

Yeah they are Peace Officers but here in NY I see a lot of people like the play on the status of some agencies, Only difference between a Police Officer and a Peace Officer is that Police officers can execute warrants along with court officers. Thats about it but other wise the job function is pretty much the same.

TBTA officers carry off duty, they make arrest and all of that.

Although most of NYPD's finest like to think they are the only game in town other agencies with peace officer status make more than NYPD.

Hell you have the NYC Deputy Sheriffs and they are classified as peace officers, why I do not know because they too can execute a warrant on civil matters. Their functions are identical to the NYPD's, hell I've seen a couple of Deputy Sheriffs pull folk over and ticket them.

So I don't know to me Peace officer and Police officer and basically the same its

ftdtetr
06-21-2007, 10:03 AM
The whole police officer vs peace officer things is overrated, what is more important is the actual scope of your work, police officers do get much more training. In the cpl it is listed exactly what agencies are police and what agencies are peace officers, and who can carry, many possibly most peace officers can NOT carry but within thier G.A.O.E. they still can still arrest etc. and for the most part nobody is trying to do stuff outside of thier "work area" unless its some type of emergency or major crime, they will just notify whoever is responsible for that area.
A dentist is still a doctor but unless a guy is hurt in front of him in front of him he sticks to working on teeth.

The results should be mailed out either this month or next month, but be advised the eligible list has already been established.

When I took the NYPD exam I called up APD 2 days after I scored my exam using the answer key and found my list number out (keep in mind the answer key was published 3 weeks after the exam).

Why should it be thrown out, just because you didnt do as good as you hoped, everyone else should get f@#ked? That's what happens with exams, someone has to do worse in order for others to be hired, suck it up and take the next test. You were/are found unfit for the position of BTO if they do not get to you.

I found something intersting on the page when i googled TBTA officer-the page also has State MTA on it-the job part said the MTA police officers make $34K to $68K/yr(more than NYPDs $32K to $59k/yr)-how much does the TBTA officer make ( they listed a part time as $12.98/hr or something) and do they-Bridge and tunnel officers -have to attend a full time academy like other police officers......? Also, do NYPD "precincts" look down on TBTA officers or is there a good working relationship(like if a call went out of a crime in progress, would NYPD still respond or contact TBTA to handle it)

nyc2235
07-13-2007, 11:38 AM
TBTA starts at 37k and goes to 52k but you can make a killing in overtime. and the academy is full time 3 months long covering Peace Officer training, Firearms, TBTA rules and regulations etc. TBTA isnt looked down by NYPD in general, some of the oldtimers think BTO's are just security because their idiots.

Does anyone have a phone number where a LIVE person actually picks up??? It makes no sense how we took this test, and get absolutely NO INFO on it. Everybody knows the city could care less, but c'mon they could try a little better at keeping people informed of this situation. None of this makes any sense. Any info,...anybody???

There are many test that have been administered.Average time to get the CERTIFIED list is usually 5-7 months.

Hey Guys,

I am new to this forum and have a couple of questions.

1) Does anybody have updated info on BTO Exam 6091 administered on May 19, 2007? Is the test being thrown out?

2) If you are hired as a temporary BTO, can you join the special 20 year pension plan for BTO's only (called the NYCERS MTA Bridges and Tunnels 20 year, Age 50 Retirement Plan for Tier 4 Members (50/20))? Or do they make you join the regular old Tier 4 plan?

3) To Roman Arts or anyone else currently in the Academy, do they let you join the BTO 50/20 retirement plan when you are hired? Alternatively, is there a waiting period to join that plan or do they require you join the regular Tier 4 retirement plan first?

Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

the test will probably not be thrown out.they are going to have another test for numerous reasons 1. they make $$$from tests.2. they are expecting many retirements and do not wannt to get people from the bottom of the list.nycta is givin a bus operator test next year.they gave a test earler this year and have not promulgated it yet.same reasons as above.relax,if you got a 90 or better and your not an edp, you're in!

Looks like the test will not be used, rumor as of now.Start studying, again.Good luck to all.

Like I sadi before from what I know the test is not thrown out and the list should be established really soon, the reason is there are rumours that the new class of the new list will be going in in November. As far as the question about temp BTO you do not have a pension plan when you are a temp, therefore you cannot join our pension plan.

bklynbob... They have to use the new list. List 2065 is done. The June class was their last class that they hired off of 2065.

The next class will be off the new list. The test scheduled for 2008 was a tentitive one. If they use the test given back in may 2007.. there is no reason for them to give a test in 2008.

I hit really high on the test they gave in May 2007... so hopefully it comes thorugh within the next 2 months.

They don't need to put in a class. they can hire provisionals or they can just pay ot to current officers.the nypd is running 5000 short.Ya think The tbta can survive with a 100-200 less officers? I'm sure they can.......and will.

I am new to this civil service stuff but my understanding is that a lot needs to happen before the City can hire new BTO's from the May exam, including:
1) protests to specific exam questions are submitted to a Test Validation Board. The TVB evaluates the protests and prepares a report with recommendations. (Does anyone know if this has been done yet?)
2) the final exam key is established (This has not happened yet. FYI, 7 of the 9 tests given in December 2006, do not have final exam keys yet - so this may be months away.)
3) exams are rated, followed by a 30 day waiting period for applicants to challenge the computation of their score
4) the eligible list is created
5) people are hired off the list

The above is for a test without complications. The BTO test is under investigation by the Department of Investigation and I don't know how that will effect or lengthen the process.

Sorry Viper2007, NYC employees do not seem to answer the phone.

Give it time. The rumor is that there will be a class sometime between November-Janaury. If thats the case, the people that hit high on top of the new list will be contacted sometime within the next month or so.

TBTA will need at least 2 months to propery screen and investigate a group before they can hire them.

I have not heard anything. But it is my understanding that they cannot hire permanent applicants from the May 2007 exam until the exam key has been finalized and a list established. As per the DCAS website:

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcas/html/employment/kmay2007.shtml

the exam key has not been finalized yet. Maybe the website is not up to date, but it is likely going to take a while.

Theres no way they can do a November class. If they sent out letters now, they would probably start processing towards the middle of Oct. Theres no way that they can properly investigate and process a group of new hires in 4 or 5 weeks... I think we are looking at December of January.

I dont see how the hiring freeze would directly affect TBTA as TBTA is technically part of MTA. ANDDDD... MTA is not a real city agency, but only a PUBLIC BENEFIT CORPORATION for THE STATE OF NEW YORK.

Basically, if MTA runs out of money, then everyone under MTA are out of the job. If the city runs out of money and the MTA still has money, then everyone still has a job under MTA. Of course... soon or later it will affect things!

Unfortunately, the mta is crying poverty, the want to raise fares and tolls. If there are a lot of retirements, they will probably hire a class or three. If not,the new fiscal year stars on 7/1 08.

wow!! I've been waiting for my account to be activated since august!!! its been killing me that I couldnt post.

I got around a 94 on the exam, and havent recieved anything yet. However all the things that are sent to me always take forever since my last name is close to the end of the alphabet (I think they send them out in batches in alphabetical order) and I live out in suffolk county.

Can you guys explain what the packet is about and what it says in it. also was the envelope big when it came (so I know not to get my hopes up when I check the mail).

Ant, as I read in the other pages on this thread you said you scored around an 88. Thats good enough to get called. It will probably take 2-3 years, but look at roman arts, he scored an 86 and just graduated the academy.

well....now the waiting begins.

Stackit02
11-06-2007, 12:51 PM
The envelope was a big one. It came with a cover letter that states that the eligible list has not been established yet, but with your grade we anticipate you will be called. Then it tells you that you must attend a pre-employment orientation. It gives you an entire background packit to fill out and bring with you to that orientation. The entire envelope has about 50 or so pages in it, so its definitely a big package. I am assuming people who got a 95 and above will get the package first.

hiring freeze in nyc. take the us park police test.trees, water ,parks........or carbon monoxide, traffic,********* drivers...................

Trees? Parks? Must be thinking of Park Rangers, we are urban law enforcement, our field office in NY is kind of held back due to understaffing, not a bad job although you will be stuck in DC for a bit.

Anyway, what kind of training does TBTA get?

Cadet2020

Another simple but useful question...I received the packet...so believe the process would be somewhat quick...does anyone know when the next academy class would be...?

gbotj
11-07-2007, 04:22 PM
TBTA Training Sgt.'s said the next class should be late december.

It usually takes 1-1 1/2 months to process a group, a new group is processed every 3 months.

Usually everything is scheduled in three weeks span. So if your orientation is Nov. 27th you will probably have the next step by the 3rd of December. it should be done by the last week of december or first week of january, the next class should be march or april 08' (they put a class in every three months, it just took so long for this class becuase it was the first off the new list).

gbotj
11-08-2007, 12:57 PM
well, it seems I wont be getting processed for this group (I missed it by 1 friggin point) so I heard theres going to be another class in march, so they will begin to process a new group around january.

Can you guys (1st group) please tell us what the orientation is about, along with the next steps as you go along, just to give us a heads up on everything.

Cadet2020

yes, hey you deserve it.

by joining forums and having a strong interest in law enforcement you show that you really want to do the job, and not just collect a paycheck.

I'll let you know if I hear anymore on the academy start date.

I guess I should look at it this way. I should be in the march class which means I'll hit the streets in the summer and not the winter....thats definately a plus.....however I'd love to start next month. lol.

gbotj
11-09-2007, 05:04 PM
I'll tell ya though.

I'm sooo freakin happy they started processing because the first group off a new list ALWAYS takes the longest. After the first class TBTA puts a new one in every three months (usually one week after a class graduates a new one goes in).

once one class goes into the academy they begin processing for a new group, so I (along with the others who scored around the same as me) should get our packet by beginning of january....this gives us time to prepare for the academy and thereafter.

ugh more waiting.

gbotj
11-09-2007, 11:58 PM
probably 2-3 years, hopefully your score will go up with the final key.

romanarts got an 87 and it took him 4 years to get on. I have been told that TBTA is expecting many retirements plus promotions to both Sgt. and Lt. so it may go faster this time.

look at it this way. The more questions you got wrong with the proposed key, the more chances you have to get them marked correct, based on pure probability of others getting those wrong and being changed to right. so that 88 may turn to a 90 and now your looking at a year to get called.

"But remember, you'll be peace officers, not cops"

great another hairbag.

It doesnt matter what your title is whether its police officer or peace officer you may or may not be a cop. There are certainly many police officers who are not cops and many peace officers who are cops.

A cop is what many believe to be a "constable on patrol" correct me if I'm wrong but TBTA patrols bridges and tunnels. Others believe "cop" was derived from the copper shields the NYPD first carried, if thats the case than NO one other than NYPD are cops!
