gbotj I've been ok working stupid retail jobs at the mall just to be able to pay my bills I had to recently get rid of my car so I would be able to afford going back to school to finish my credits so that hopefully when the city gets it act together financially I will be able to go into the NYPD, I'm now no longer just hoping for TBTA I'm hoping for any agency that will take me, as of recently I've rediscovered my hate for working retail.
Otherwise things have been eventful I was awarded APO of the year, and I made my first collar after a foot chase for criminal menacing earlier on in the year, How have things been with you?

gbotj, i hope what you're saying is true with those retiring to greener pastures, i'd love to get called, i'm in the early 700's and when we got our list #s i was told i could have possibly gotten a call by now! so much for that!

Neuro that great man! Congrats on the award.
I've just been waiting...and waiting....and waiting...did I mention waiting? lol.
Its good to see you posting again on the thread.
NYJets -
Thats what I heard, about 100-150 retiring over the next 2 years or so. Thats a big number for an agency with 900 (give or take) members.
And with a 700 list number, I do think you would have been called by now if the economy wasnt so bad. I think my group got down to the 430/440 on the list, at orientation they said expect a class end of april/early may. If they would have continued everything the way they were going they probably would have had another class sometime this fall....That would have been your list number band.

i'm hoping people went to nypd or gave up by the time they call etc.etc.

its going to be hard to give up, no other agencies in NY are hiring anytime soon other than NYSP and some of the upstate agencies. plenty of agencies make you wait 1yr plus to be hired, its nothing new. NCPD usually makes you wait anywhere from 7 months to 1 year. MTAPD sometimes takes 2 years to get hired.
Unless guys on the tbta list were hired in July 2008 for NYPD they wont be getting on NYPD until Jan 2010 earliest, and I bet the Jan 2010 class is going to be packed with people from lists from 2006-2008.
Im not sure on this but I think on the last TBTA list they were in a hiring freeze for a few months. They still made it to list number 1600 or so.

Do you know how long it takes to be hired by School Safety or DEP Police? I know DEP Police is giving an exam in February and School Safety is giving one in March.

dep is very quick.
NYCTNT

Get hired by DEP is NOT quick.
They hire only about 30 per class and do not have steady classes every 6 months or so like NYPD.
SS hires more quickly than DEP for sure.

Hello,Even though I am not on this TBTA 2065 list would anybody know if they have actually extended the hiring lists before after a hiring freeze? To me a hiring freeze means a list freeze. So if they don't hire for 18 months then the list gets extended for 18 months after the original expiration date.
I apologize for going off topic but I have heard that they might not hire in DSNY for at least 2 years(exam 6063) Yeah I know that is a city job,but both lists have 4 year time frames. Thanks

Vab, I am right there with you. I was up at 6:45am and the phone hasnt left my side since (even though Im pretty sure they dont call prior to noon).
I honestly can not believe how long its taking them to hire us. Prior to our group, they put in a class every 4 months. Usually for 1 year they would have 3-5 classes. Now we've been waiting for the call for 9 months....
bjj0326
01-12-2009, 12:49 PM
call has to come by thursday if it is gonna be the end of the month. gotta bad feeling
gbotj
01-12-2009, 04:00 PM
another day, another dissapointment.
For some reason, I've had the feeling its going to be 27th rather than the 26th. My thinking for this is that a new pay period starts the 28th, so they would just pay us for 1 day work, and then go through to middle of february before cutting new checks. Same thing happened with the feb 08 class, they were hired last day of the pay period.
The way I look at it, is we're closer than ever now.
bjj0326
01-12-2009, 06:06 PM
For all of our sake I hope your right
gbotj
01-12-2009, 06:55 PM
I mean, either Jan 27th, or 2nd week of February is a very strong possibility. For the past 3 years TBTA had a February class and all 3 times it was 2nd week (Feb 12, 2007. Feb 12, 2008. and Im pretty sure there was a Feb 2006 class too).

Do you have your bags packed??? By the end of 2009/ early 2010 you are coming WEST, even if I have to send the ticket to you myself !!! ( by then the city of L.A. will have "miraculously" come out of its budget crisis, and The house that "Jack Webb" built will have a badge waiting for you):D

Word at my fac is that the earliest will be in April. This is not one or two people saying it but more than a handful.
Also, the first test in the academy is "counting up" and you definitely must score a 100. ;)

'E-ZER PASS' EYED FOR CASHLESS TOLLS
By TOM NAMAKO
January 24, 2009 --
Tollbooth attendants could soon be left in the dust.
Cashless tolls could come to MTA bridges and tunnels after the agency conducts a 14-month study to begin at the end of this month.
The technology could have drivers waving goodbye to awkward cash handoffs and mechanical barriers.
Instead, drivers would zip through the same way they do in E-ZPass express lanes, leaving all the work to a transponder attached to their car or a video camera that focuses on passing license plates.
Bills would then be sent to drivers' homes.
The cashless tolls could also save drivers from being stranded at endless stop-and-go toll-plaza lines - and save the MTA funds, officials said.
About 25 percent of drivers who use the MTA's crossings use cash to pay tolls, according to internal statistics.
The agency's Bridge and Tunnel division generates more toll revenue than any other such agency in the country, raking in $3.1 billion each year. About 850,000 drivers use the crossings each day.
It's too early to say what kind of tolling will be looked at, MTA officials said.
"We will use the upcoming study to consider all implementation options at this point," said Joyce Mulvaney, a spokeswoman for the agency's bridges and tunnels.
MTA board members are expected to approve a $1.5 million, yearlong study contract with Hackensack-based PBS&J Architecture at their Jan. 28 meeting.
The Port Authority also began looking into the speedy tolls for their six bridges and tunnels in 2007.
Their project should be completed by 2012.
"Right now, we're looking at the options and related issues, like how to give out violations," spokesman Steve Coleman said.
Cashless tolling is used in certain parts of California, Texas and Florida, and is a much bigger hit internationally, with the technology in place in Chile, Australia and Israel.
The South Jersey Transportation Authority, which runs the Atlantic City Expressway, is also studying video tolling.
Many of the MTA's toll plazas were on the outs anyway, according to an agency report.
"This is the right time to study and assess video tolling," the report said, because "a number of existing toll plazas will need to be replaced in the future."
Cashless tolling was first touted as an option in July 2008.
The MTA's facilities include the RFK Bridge (formerly the Triborough Bridge), the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
The PA operates the bridges and tunnels along the Hudson River and the Goethals Bridge.

This plan sounds much better than it will be. What happens when people don't pay the bill they receive? It's going to be a huge problem for the TBTA.
gbotj
01-28-2009, 11:26 AM
if you dont pay the bill, you wount be able to renew your cars registration. Thats what was said at the MTA meeting on this.
This will likely only affect temps, when EZ pass was implemented, MTA said if they go full automation they will model a Police Departments similar to Port Authority Police. and when BTO spots were eliminated due to EZpass they created the SOD and enforcement posts to to raise manning.

Would this only affect NYS car registrations or will other states follow this rule to? Alot of NJ drivers take the bridges and tunnels too, and if this only affects NY registrations, then the MTA may have problems with NJ drivers not paying their bill.

It will be like here in CA ( in terms of EZ passes on the freeway or parking tickets) sooner or later it will go to "collections", and your state tax returns could be impounded, or they'll just screw your credit score up. Enough people will pay so that it won't make a difference for the recalcitrant evaders + isn't MTA dual or tri state like PORT Authority PD?
gbotj
01-29-2009, 09:08 AM
MTA is NYS and CT.
Nysco
01-29-2009, 12:35 PM
They can't just suspend your registration. That would have to be done by the Legislature and the Gov. But that would only stop NY drivers. What happens to other state drivers?

I dont know, I wouldnt be surprised if we get the call on March 13th (the longest they could possibly wait before drug tests run out) and give 18 days notice (like the June 2007 class) and start on March 30th.
or the class will start sometime in march and we will get the call prior to the drug tests running out
or we will have to do new drug tests.

hey fellas, gbot and tnelly i'm trying to PM you guys but the lousy work computer has the "O" as a site using quota so i can't seem to post. i'll hit you guys some time today. things have been good trying to get back in shape a bit. i can't believe how badly out of shape i got in the last 3 or 4 months, but i'm getting there. having a 2 year old really messes up eating sometimes, and my wife and i just got lazy and ordered out a bit too much.
the bto's are still doing block training which seems continuous, so i guess a good indication of when we would go in would be if someone gets word they will be postponing or atleast greatly reducing the amount of bto's going for block. let's cross our fingers for may/april and hope they can get moving on this list for the rest of the guys waiting. i hope they can get a regular schedual for the classes going, i don't want to be junior scum at my facility as long as the last group of guys that went in, they're going on 2 years already.

hey Vab, hows it going man, i haven't been on in a while and had no idea so much was being said on rant. gbotj i sent you pm. yeah this sounds good. i talked to a buddy and he's hearing march 9th and i talked to a bto on the narrows today going home and he said the chatter was for the 9th also so this is looking good. we should get calls next week or the week after at the latest.
as for notice bjj, has to be minimum one week because we have to get fitted for uniforms at parks (they still have us fit at parks in Brooklyn right?) and then pick up a few days later. they try to give us two weeks but i know that isn't the case all the time. my buddy who went in was a holdover and he got a one week notice.
lets see fellas i guess we can look hard at our phones again, keep em charged.
gbotj
02-17-2009, 08:15 PM
yea usually its 1 week minimum, unless something happens and you get called the day before. I heard that happened with someone from the last class, there was a problem with their BI and they got called the night before (I think it was the night before)
They have to have a sufficient amount of time to send out packets, allow us time to fill everything out and get things notorized, and time to get to park coats and get our uniforms.
The last class got 2 weeks notice, and the class from June '07 got 18 days notice.

gbotj
02-19-2009, 12:51 PM
no.
People going for the third test were people who went to orientation in March 2008, the first initial drug test, then the one in September, and now this one.
Those DQ'd from the first round back in November had their second drug test in September and now this one. Those who only had 2 drug tests were the guys with higher list numbers who were not contacted in September. I believe on the other page someone posted that the last drug test they had was in March.

sure there is a difference, nobody will deny that,i don't think anyone ever said that tbta was like nypd, just take a browse through tbta rant. but for the guys that are more law enforcement oriented at tbta, bto's run similar risks as nypd in quite a few instances, especially when it comes to the scope of vehicular stops. sure there are alot of guys that don't give a rats bhind when it comes to law enforcement, but getting a few guys that stay pro law enforcement after academy would be an asset to the department and to their fellow bto's there are guys that give tbta an unsavory image but the whole unit shouldn't be judged by them and their lack of motivation or lack of management to enforce. i think what it comes down to is that nypd deserves the same amount of courtesy as someone from tbta would get from them. i was always extended professional courtesy from PD and that will always be how i operate with them. so a p*$$ing match isn't necessary here, it's just that to say it's not the same job at all can be insulting to a guy who runs similar risks doing his job properly & trying to do his part to keep the roads clean from people who would put good and innocent folks at risk

Make sure you have the baseball cap on that they give you with your grey's. Also make sure you buy like 50 black pens cause you need black only and if you don't have a pen they will ding you. Also don't be late. Roll call is 0650 hours but we were always there by 620 and NO LATER. plenty of extra time in the morning to talk and study. Be careful who you trust! There are a few female Sgts that might even be Lt's by now. You'll learn real quick not to trust them. Good luck and get ready for the first 2 days of paperwork, paperwork, and more paperwork!

Ok went to Olinville, nice operation they have running there and pretty friendly. Was busy inside. Little old lady measured me for the dress uniform which will be ready some time before graduation. She said I would get a call for them. And she had me try on my size for the grey shirts, pants, and belt. The pants are as hideous as I remember, and the hat is pretty generic but comfortable. They do not alter your training uniform for you for free but they can do it there for 4 dollars. I opted to just have my local guy do the pant alteration. No patches on the shirts yet. I am assuming we will be issued them. The lady was complaining because apparently the shirts they got came pre stitched with police academy patches which she had to take out...but everyone at the place was nice. It's a full service supply store, range under the store too. Plenty of street parking. See you guys on the 9th

You might want to check with D. Wells about the patches and the alterations. When I got my uniforms from Park Coats they altered them and the shirts had the patches on them. The TBTA is paying these people to do this stuff so I would check before you show up and get reamed!

Towards the end of the class they will give you a bid sheet. Usually the CBB, MPB, and HHB are not even on the list. Most people end up at the TBB either Manhattan or The Bronx. 16 out of 28 from my class went to the TBX.
It all goes by class seniority which is based on list number. When you see the class roster it will be in order from 1 through 28. Its self explanatory from there.

Everyone else that has been wishing us congrats, THANK YOU ALL, you've been following our antics for a while, it really did get comical on this thread with the waiting and internet cabin fever...
BMAC thanks for the heads up on about the patches and tailoring. i was surprised that the shirts had no patches and that they weren't given. i"m going to call Ms. Wells in the morning and let her know. i was looking forward to having to go to Parks, they are close to me and I've been there a dozen times already. i'm not sure why they ever lost the contract to outfit us but the olinville people were ok, just far for me. i just hope this isn't a mistake about the patches and tailoring. I'd hate to have to go all the way back there just for that. also the pants are different from the academy greys i wore before, these aren't a solid grey, almost slightly speckled... i'll let you know what D Wells says...

Plain, let us know what Ms. Wells says about the patches so we can all figure out if we are going to be issued them during the first week and then apply them, or if Olinville were supposed to apply them.
Just got off the Phone with D.Wells, they did not seem to know that Olinville was doing this (no patches, no free alteration). She told me she would call back, last class had patches on and free alteration at Parks.
pants alteration is no biggie, especially if my local guy will do it and save me a trip. but like BMAC said the PATCHES were on the shirts already for the last group. i guess it won't be that big of a deal either since none of us will have patches....i'll let you know what she says when she calls me back.
Does anyone know if the hat is supposed to be a generic plain blue ball cap or is that thing supposed to have an embroidered tbta logo or patch on it? because it's a plain cap that they issued.

It seems like this Olinville Arms messed the order up, no alterations (free at parks and same day), no patches on uniform shirts, no hats with patches.
Definately let us know what Ms. Wells says because maybe they are issuing the wrong stuff out. I can understand if we have to apply the patches ourselves, but now we'll have to put them on the hats too.

Here is what Park Coats did. 2 l/s grey shirts with patches, 2 greyish pants (Yes they did have a hint of black), 1 clip on tie, 1 leather belt, 1 blue baseball cap WITH a TBTA logo patch on the front. They measured us for our Class A's which were delivered to RI. The greys had patches, all alterations done for us.
During training the shoe truck will show up and you can get 2 pairs. Get a shoe and a boot. If they have your size they give it to you on the spot. Later in the training you'll get your class A's, winter coat, snow coat, uniform shirts and pants, all you brass, tie clips, and extra patches. I would suggest buying a few extra tie clips and collar brass. Do yourself a favor while your at the police supply store, buy a duty belt and an off duty holster for a glock 19. Make sure the holster has a thumb snap. Also pick up the Penal Code and VTL now. This will save you the trip back. They are going to tell you in the first few days to buy this stuff anyway.
Any other questions feel free to PM me.
This job didn't work out for me but good luck to all of you!

It does not go up to 40K. If you look at the contract it clearly states that first year pay will remain $36,900. The second year pay does go up to almost 44k.

Plain, Ms. Wells probably doesnt take care of the uniform stuff, theres probably someone else in charge of that. I think Hal Greenburg is in charge of that, so she probably had to contact him, then he'll contact Olinville Arms, get to the bottom of it, then tell Ms. Wells, who will then call you back...got it? I think I confused myself on that.

ok just talked to Wells, they are now aware of the situation including the hat business, she said that we would get a call to either go back, or if we can't go back, the officers who already picked up their uniforms would not be penalized and would be issued patches at orientation. so in the meantime i guess the guys who haven't picked up their greys shouldn't worry about it because they are aware of the situation. i have a feeling Parks will get the contract again next class. i told her about the hat and she started laughing i could picture her shaking her head...
BMAC thanks for the heads up on everything.
but i guess just wait for a call and instructions. maybe they WILL make us go back, you know how they have flip flopped on stuff...if they don't make calls, then just show up with what we are being issued.

If you have a PD supply store near you try to pick up a few patches and pt them on the uniforms yourself. Can't hurt. Otherwise good luck. Oh yeah, remember to hang on to all of your receipts for any bridge or tunnel from the first day of the academy until you get your EZ pass. They will reimburse you.
Good luck

yea BMACs got the right idea, if your close to a police supply store just pick up 2 patches (they shouldnt be more than $2 each) and have your tailor sew them on when you go for alterations since your using your own guy. I dont know if you want to spend the extra money. You will only need 2 patches for the shirt your wearing on the first day, then take the 2 your issued and sew them on the second.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Gov. David Paterson and the Legislature are negotiating a deal to rescue the debt-ridden Metropolitan Transportation Authority that could put $2 tolls on bridges over the Harlem and East rivers.
The Democrat-led Senate discussed the MTA issue this week and hopes to have a deal that can be passed in the Legislature by the end of the next week that Paterson could sign into law.
Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver proposed the $2 tolls on the bridges over the East River and Harlem River as part of a compromise.
The agency has projected a $1.4 billion deficit in its operating budget next year and a $3 billion gap by 2012.
Paterson has called the problem urgent and said an agreement was needed this week.

They dont see the logistical traffic nightmare that will occur to their toll plaza set up on those measly little bridges, which lead to little streets.
I can see the bruckner and FDR backed up for MILES because of this.
Pollution sky rocketing due to slowwwwwwwer than snail traffic and hassle galore.
Thanks Paterson, try living here for a little and get a bigger picture.. FOOL!

They will not put in toll plaza's- if tolling on the east river/harlem river crossings goes into effect it will be a 100% "cashless" electronic toll system that is already being used in other states and other countries and work at "normal" speeds. Tolling is becoming more common place in other parts of the country (ie- the more rural) because of cashless systems- it is a whole lot easier for a state/county/etc. to implement than the traditional toll plaza.
There is huge money in this field- and I would not be surprised if the companies that compete in the cashless/video/high speed tolling systems make rather large campaign contributions to certain NYS/NYC politicos.
In fact you may see less congestion if all of the crossings were the same price- people would actually use the BBT instead of clogging up the BQE/Gowanus on their way to the Brooklyn Bridge in order to save $5
I doubt a BTO will ever be assigned to the "other" east river crossings or the harlem river spans, the MTA POLICE will just dust off their "highway unit". Remember the main function of a BTO is to collect tolls- get our union to change that somehow instead of worrying about overtime and just maybe this job won't die out.

When the MTA awarded the study for cashless tolling (I believe it was 1/28/09) both presidents of the BTOBA and SOBA were there, I guess to plan their next step. I have no idea what this means but I've heard things like possibly selling the lanes.
What are your thoughts on this?

Think EZ Pass and cameras for the East River crossings. In Florida new turnpike exits are cashless.....they accept Sunpass (Florida's version of EZ Pass) or if no pass they photo your plate and send a collection notice to the car's owner, at a higher amount of course.

Temp BTO are the guys and girls in the brown shirts whose job is strictly revenue collection (toll booths). They free up BTO's for more LE duties i think.

If you don't have black shoes- you should spend the money on buying a normal pair of comfortable black dress shoes that you can use in real life. You can wear almost any type of shoe in training before they issue you shoes- long as it is black and clean.
Wear the shoes the give you while you are in training, and then right before you get out of training buy a pair of Rockies/511's to wear everyday at work.

Cashless tolling is on the horizon- you really just have to use common sense to realize this, which unfortunately does not really prevail on this job (you will see in time.).
The union(s) instead of taking steps to ensure that we have as many non toll spots (and yes a plaza spot is a TOLL spot) as possible, is sitting back while the MTA is beginning to take away security spots from both the officer and sgt. ranks. The lanes at this point and time are pretty worthless as a bargaining tool- that ship sailed quite a while ago.
But, concentrate on that stuff when you get out there. For now- enjoy your weekends off- seriously make the best of them. After graduation you are only getting 3 of them every 10 weeks.

We graduated the academy on 6/29. It was 16 loonnngg weeks lol.
Academy was great, I feel we learned alot and so far in my 1 week otj I've put alot of the training to use.
So far this job is greeeaaaaaattttt! I love going to work everyday! I lucked out with my facility, they are big with law enforcement, and the bosses are great. Everyone that came to this facility from the class all ended up on the same schedule and we all have almost zero tolls in our chart (we mainly do checkpoints, and work the plaza. A few of us have worked the HOV enforcement, and got rmp assignments already).
the first couple nights were a little crazy, not knowing what to expect. My first car stop, I was a nervous wreck hahahahaha. But much much better now lol. Still learning alot each day, and the guys are great. They really took us under their wings and taught us a few things about collars, and summonses, court testimony, one guy took me in the rmp and taught me alot about the right way to patrol the facility (and there is alot to it! I thought it was just driving across one end and back to the other.....boy was I wrong!).
anyways, good luck to everyone out there. Stay safe, and have fun.

there really hasnt been much talk of hiring. Alot of people are still surprised we were hired! I have heard though that the next class will most likely be in 2010.
About half way through the academy there was talk of laying us off, but then the MTA got the bailout and we were saved (thank god) so hopefully that means they will hire a few more classes sooner or later.
I love the job, I look forward to going to work everyday, it really is alot of fun.
You make of it what you want, you can stand on post and do car stops and "fish" all night long or you can just monitor traffic lol. Best advice I can give is choose your facility wisely. Where I work we are allowed to do basically whatever we want as far as LE goes. Sometimes were told to "look" for certain things. So far I havent collected one toll, and Im rarely on the plaza. But thats how it is at my facility. Over at the Triborough, all they do is collect tolls day after day ALTHOUGH they are really really into law enforcement over there. I constantly hear them on the air with 'one under' night after night.
Ant, if LE is what you want, and your not satisfied with Sanitation, I'd recommend this job to you. Top salary at DSNY is a little bit better, and the retirement is a little bit better, but I know guys where I work who made 170k as an officer last year (yes they basically lived at work but its possible to make a lot of money). I know a few months back there was alot of trash talk on this thread about the job, and let me just tell you that it must be different at some facilities because I certainly do not see any of it. And Im not the only one, the others from my class who came to the facility with me all love it too. Good luck.

Good luck.
So gbotj,
Just curious, but tell me how you make out with your first DWI collar???

Come on man! Transfer to a real facility- where you work didn't get it's nickname because of the amount of action. You don't collect tolls because there is nobody to collect tolls from! Toll taking is where most of the action is- it is like having a mini check point- the majority of collars on this job come out of the lanes, or by officers who stand in front of lanes.
Glad you like it- but I have heard through the grapevine that you did get a taste firsthand recently what most of the supervisors on this job are like when it comes to LE.
Also about that patch- the story I heard from our resident patch collector is that, the Authority wanted us to where that patch in the late 80's early 90's and our wonderful union shot it down because we are a bunch of toll takers- and they still take that stance in 2009- it is a big part of why we are regressing back to the "old days" in our agency- but without any of the perks of the old days.

moon, yea I got a taste of the ****canning. I was pretty upset at first but after I actually thought about it, the boss had to prioritize and the collar had to take the backseat.
Your right, a good amount of collars do come from the lanes, thats why when I am on the plaza I'll usually stake out certain lanes at certain times lol....and hey, leave my facility alone! Hows ur new facility? I hear you EDPs all night long on the air, ZONE CHECK ZONE CHECK ZONE CHECK. All officers please turn in your summonses to the desk. One Under, One Under. ect. hahahahaha.
oh and stop stalking me already lol.

Hey your new just like me I've got my share of the ***** canning already on legit collars. Mostly violations and the skell has no ID but hey nothing like doing car stops on foot in the heart of times square lol I just fish for 509/511's now and look for the occasional cpcs.

lol, ahh the wonderful car stops on foot where the car is rolling up to YOU! (gee there goes the tactics). Already beat ya to the 509 and 511s lol. Its like shooting fish in a barrell.
btw, I like it when I get no ID. Keeps things interesting when you run them, and they give you 2 different ways of spelling smith, and they are 30 years old and born in 1970 lol.
