I will retire in a few years from the Sheriff's Office in Orlando. Are there any departments in smaller towns that I could work for?

I'm from Massachusetts but am not yet LE. I'm finishing my freshman year in a DC university and will apply to agencies when i graduate. I do, however, know a lot about Mass police through friends and connections. There is a lot of tradition in Mass, therefore it is hard to get onto a department. With a lot of experience I'm sure you could get in but it may take a while and departments don't hire too often. This is probably the only response you'll get on this forum. There is a better forum that you can put a thread out on. www.masscops.com. Here is the link to the forum where you can find employment information. http://www.masscops.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=7 . If you have any other questions just send me a message. Good luck!

That's too funny.....I am a Massachusetts LEO (P/T) and I am trying to get into the OCSO in Orlando.
Any advice? ;)
Massachusetts is very tough to get into; Civil Service creates nightmares for otherwise qualified candidates, however, there are a lot of non-CS agencies that you may have good luck getting into:
ie:
Bolton PD
Mendon PD
Norfolk PD
Nantucket PD

What part of MA are you interested in?
If you're looking at the Southeastern part of the state near but not on Cape Cod, the towns of Marion, Mattapoisett, & Rochester are all non-Civil Service, which means you don't have to take the statewide test that's held every two years to get hired.
I also think that the towns of Swansea and or Somerset are non Civil Service, but don't hold me to that.
Like the other poster said if you check out Masscops.com it'll give you an idea of how things work up here. They also have somewhere on the site a complete list of all the non-Civil Service towns in the state which you will find useful.
If you want to know the whole deal on how Civil Service works and how most of the cities and towns hire in MA sent me a PM and I'll shoot back an explanation to you.

Word of caution on MassCops.com - 91% of the members there are whackers or wanna-bes. I joined up over a year ago and left after about one week of the foolishness over there.
Thank God this site isn't run like TrashCops; I call it that because the majority over there talk trash.
MassCops.com's forums are an insult to the law enforcement profession.

That's funny. I think this site has more wannabees and "how fast do you drive" threads. If you want to find out about a specific department in MA, chances are you'll find someone or a thread about it on masscops.
Good luck.

You may be correct, but this site does a pretty good job of keeping the whacker topics out of the Florida and Mass forums. :)

What are you looking for. I never worked LE in MASS, but I grew up there (South Shore). Those are all smaller departments and away from the city.
P.S. Why MASS?

Seems to be down for the last few days. It got hijacked a few weeks ago by some nerds, and the administrator got it back up from his laptop while he was in Vegas. He has been upgrading and tweeking things lately and hopefully it should be up and running soon.
