What is your take on the emerging DOD/DOA Police Forces taking over the military base law enforcement?

The guys that I have talked to seem to be getting the same training that the local police are getting but most aren't state recognized.

I think civilianizing military law enforcement is good if the training is good and the pay is kept competitive. MP's should be out with the Army, not at home at the base.

The problem around here is that GS-5 and GS-6 is not competitive with the cost of living and what local PD's pay.

We really don't have too many military bases left in the Bay Area. We have one Army reserve post, a (most of the time mothballed) Navy Depot that is currently run by the Army and will eventually become an Army Post, and Travis Air Force Base.

I don't know anything about Travis but know about the others. Out here they don't pay enough to compete for the same applicant pool as the local PD's and SO's. The federal retirement can't compete with CalPERS retirement either.

Federal cops are not recognized as peace officers under CA law but they have some powers of arrest with respect to some local laws.

Here in NY most of the departments start out competively but after a few years, they're not anymore.

Fort Drum police are the third highest paid to start. But not to top out at.

The retirement for the police officer not covered by 6c doesn't compare to a state or local 20/50 retirement.

I could be wrong, but the DOD/DOA police are looking to get off duty-multi-jurdiscational powers. I would work for them if they had a permenant spot. I used to be an MP at Drum, and alot of friends are cops up there

most dod/doa police positions are perminant but drum has mostly term. Campbell has mostly temp positions... Maybe they'll go perm.

I think when DoD gets a straightened out budget they will convert alot of jobs to perm. or out source (via A-76) slots. I recently read an article about some of the security guards hired at the DLA in Monterey were the company forged training records and hired known convicted criminals. I spent 5 years in that mess known as DoD/DoN/DA and unless they do away with 18 y/o military mindset towards its civilian LE's then its LE program in most places.

I know I seem like Iam venting but there are alot of great officers who work for the branches but are unfortunatly stuck due to circumstances (IE Family, retired mil getting another check) but I doubt life will ever change.

That is totally the truth!
