What shift in your facility has the lowest seniority staff? At mine, and I'm guessing most, it is the afternoon-evening shift. I have always worked this shift at my institution. It seems that the majority of new hires come to this shift. Of course, day shift seems to have the higher seniority. Midnights surprised me, though. They also seem to have fairly high seniority. I assume that is because of the lack of inmate contact.

On First Shift ( 12am-8am ) We have the most seniority. We have 26 officers and 14 of them have 10 years +.

Afternoons (1545-2345) have the lowest seniority. I've been there since I started 8 years ago. For me to go to days, it will probably take at least another 5-7 years for me to get there and stay. Midnights has a mix of very high and somewhat low seniority and everyone on days has at least 10 years in.

We have a wonderful rotating schedule that insures everyone works every shift every few weeks.

Sounds like hell, lol.
We work 12 hour shifts and with out a doubt night shift has the lowest seniority. All new hires are sent to night shift. It doesn't seem to matter that we are unbelievably short staffed on first shift, they all go to nights if they want to or not.

I kind of prefer the 1400-2200 shift. There is less brass and more inmate contact.

Afternoon shift 2- 10 pm has the least senior/younger aged staff
Day shift 6 am- 2 pm has the highest senior
Midnight shift 10 pm-6 am(which is what I'm currently on) has a mix of both.

We are on the 12 hour plan. Days = 6am to 6pm and night 6pm to 6am. We get an automatic 15 minutes of overtime everyday for our squad meetings. We just completed our seniority "bump". Seniority counts between our Facilitlies also (we have 2). Of course all of our senior Officers bumped to the Facility where there is less work and the Junior Officers work with the higher security inmates. The breakdown on shift is pretty even on all shifts. Nice not having so many lazy veterans around (I have 6 years on). :D
Most of the new guys at my jail work day watch 8/4. All the bosses are in the prison on D/W and the majority of the work is done during the day so hence the new guys work days. Morning watch 12/8 is full of old timers getting night diff and watching tv. At my jail you get to bid on where you work every 4 months.

0730-1600 Highest senority
1530-0000 Lowest senority
2330-0800 Mixed
Seems like a common theme with most deparments.

Our shifts are a pretty good mix. They don't want to have any shift lacking in experience so the Sr. Captain spreads it around.
