I'm from Indiana, I took the NYPD test several years ago when I was on active duty with the Army. They saved my test and I'm considering coming out and doing the QUEST program since I live so far away. Is the NYPD worth the expense of traveling for the selection process and then moving to NYC? What are some good and bad things about the agency?

It's better than some and worse than some. I like it ... now that I am retired that is ;) Bad things? You have to work in NYC ;).
Probably the same crap as other places. Well other major metro areas at least. I hear almost the same complaints from every major metro cop I meet. If I didn't see their patch I would swear they were NYC cops complaining.
Good things? Lots of different details. 38,000 cops but only about 10,000 to 15,000 on patrol in a car actually answering radio runs. So where are the other 20,000 or so? Good question. I have no idea. Secreted in some detail like the phone detail. I was on restricted duty once and a guy came in with a telephone outfit and started working on the phone box. I stopped him and said hey telephone guy, you can't work on police phones without asking the C.O. first. He showed me his shield and told me he was on the NYPD telehphone unit. I had no idea we had a telephone unit. Yep. We do. I checked on it. Turns out we have a telephone unit. They are responsible for fixing and maintaining the phone systems in all police facilities to make sure we are not being tapped by the bad guys. Go figure. Guy was a telephone guy before becoming a cop making half what he makes now to do the same thing he was doing when he was a phone guy! But now besides making more money he has a gun and a badge too and gets to call himself a cop.
Of course you probably have to be a captains son to get that unit but its nice work if you can get it.

don't you mean "Guy was a telephone guy before becoming a cop and now he makes half of what he used to make to do the same thing he did when he was a phone guy! But now he has a gun and a badge and gets to call himself a cop but he had to move to dutchess county."

This just made me feel even better, I really for some reason got this thing in my head I was the only one wanting to be NYPD out of my state, or want to move there. LOL I knew it was crazy but, you know how your mind likes to play tricks on you. But I think some people I tell I wanna move to NYC to be NYPD think I am a but nutty :p but oh well :D
;) Good luck with it IrishMP1 ;)

Nah, you're not alone. I worked with a quite a few people that moved from different states to join the NYPD. Our own little foreign legion ;)
But I never worked with any that were already on other departments first and then switched to NYPD. Although many many NYPD leave and go to other departments.

I'm also thinking about joining NYPD, my only dilemma is finding a place to live up there; I'd like to find a room to rent or a couple roommates to live in a 3-4 bedroom apartment. Looking at apartments in the area I don't think I would be able to afford living on my own with the salary NYPD pays. Anyone know of a good place to find rooms or people needing roommates?
Stay Safe!!!

Forget about Manhattan. Probably way to expensive. Try the outer lying boroughs like Queens, Brooklyn or Staten Island. I don't know if you can still live in the outer counties when yo are hired but if you can then that is also a good idea. Like upstate, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange or Long Island. But I think upstate is cheaper.
For room mates I would probably checkout the bulletin board of a local college in any of the areas I mentioned. If you can afford it and are young Manhattan would be more fun but it is pretty expensive.

See this is what we planned, is to live on the outter boroughs because of how expensive, but my two gals were going to move there with me...and I wanna house or try and get a small one because I just can't live in an apartment. I know that's crazy but thinking with 3 other people or so it can be done, dang it! LOL
Sorry kind of babbling off, I wish you luck as well NCHawk56 :D and thanks for the help guys ;) you all been nice..even though it wasn't my question or anything (runs away before she babbles even more)
