Just curious, for anyone who might know, how good is Suffolk County about accepting L.E.O.s certified in other states? I know you still have to take the Civil Service and go through the process like everyone else, just wondering if it would help you at all to be certified already somewhere else. I know before I moved to New Hampshire, I started the process for Southampton Town, and one of their policies was that you have to live in the town to be considered. If that is true all over Suffolk County, it sounds like you would have to move there before you even start the application process. Am I right? Thanks

It might help you to be selected, but you'll still have to go to the academy again.

To be considered for a town police on the east end, you must live there first. If they don't find anyone then they branch out. Suffolk PD can live anywhere.

Nothing will help you get selected, though having prior service and a clean record always look good while undergoing an investigation for employment. You're assigned a list number that represents where you scored on an open/competitive exam in accordance with NY civil service law. As far as an out of state equivelancy certification goes, that would be subject to the NY State Municipal Police Training Council, though the county of Suffolk will still make you attend the academy. Suffolk County even requires NYPD officers who come over to attend the academy, though some of the village and town police agencies will accept a current NY certification. I've been told that these smaller agencies are allowed to give preference to area residents who are in the same range on the civil service list as people who are not from the area. Don't be discouraged though. If you want a job like nassau or suffolk then move here, get a "in the mean time" type of job, take the test and keep your nose clean. Stay in excellent physical condition, both the nassau and suffolk academies are pretty tough. Not like Paris Island, but it's tough when you're not 18 anymore, have bills to pay, a home and family to care for etc..Check the state website to find out how to contact the MPTC. Its probably www.NYS.gov or something like that...Good Luck

great info. Irish. I'm living in Suffolk Co. (Shirley) and looking to take that exam coming up. For the summer I was thinking of applying for the position of part-time officer in South Hampton. Think it'd help out for the Suffolk Co. exam?

...Just got my my orientation letter.It is for april 24th.Anyone else here going on that date? So it says to wear proper business attire, ..is that a "suit and tie" ? and how long is it for? Thanks guys

I will be attending the orientation on the 24th as well. Rich what department are you trying to get on part time with? I'm going for part time Suffolk park police officer.

I took the full time test back in the end of 2006. There is no part time test. They were accepting part time applications last month so i put one in. I'm hoping to maybe get in part time and then when they hire for full time again I'll already have my foot in the door. I'm hoping that having already successfully completed the hiring process from last year with the park PD will help me. It sucks that they over processed for the current academy. I was one of the odd guys out.

I'm not sure on that, I'm guessing there isn't one due to the fact I'm located in Babylon. Hopefully we'll find out at the orientation. Good Luck to all.

...I am applying for part time, town of southampton.I live in sag harbor.Hope i meet up with you guys, on the 24th.I am 36 , so ill be the old guy with the cane...LOL. you think they will let me use that for the 1.5 run...haha.

..Also, when doing the "sit-ups" what position are your arms supposed to be in? behind head, or crossed on top of chest?

...And is the run on a track? indoor or out?

..Lastly what to expect at orientation?

..STX, i did read in a local paper out here (dans paper)...and i do hate to even say this, but it said southampton does not hire out of there town.Hopefully the paper was missinformed.I hate that paper anyway.

Hey Rich I appreciate the link. From the way I read it I believe that is for full-time only. But Hey we'll find out at the orientation. I'll make sure to look for that old guy with the cane haha. just playing. Gotta say thanks to Rich for his wealth of Info.
