This is a little off topic, but I was stationed a little bit in SC in the Marines. I seriously considered applying with SCHP, but I stayed in my home state and applied with NCSHP. (and was accepted too.) I can imagine its alot like the HP academy in NC.

For the review board in NCSHP, they asked me alot of questions straight from my polygraph and tried to trip me up with questions such as," you just told us you were a good HS student, but you got a 'D' in Algebra, we are not sure you are cut out for all the book work in our academy." It was almost entirely criticizing any error I ever had made in the past. I answered my questions honestly and explained any questions they had, so it wasnt too bad.

Wear a suit, get a hair cut, clean shave, sit up straight in your chair, look the board members in the eyes. Be confident in your answers, dont look too nervous.

Yeah, I know when I said dont look nervous it is easier said than done. They know you are. I was. I was so relieved when it was over. I decided to hide my uneasiness by smiling alot during the review board. I thought it was a good way to display confidence. There were 5 troopers on my board. One was a female trooper, and she said, " uh excuse me, why are you smiling? Do you think this is some sort of joke.? " I said, "no, I dont think its a joke, its just a part of my personality, I smile alot." (wasnt as if I was grinning ear to ear) I dont know if it was a good answer or even a good tactic, but I passed the board.

They certainly have given you alot of warning. I think I got a letter about 3 weeks before my review board.

Honestly, Ive thought about moving to SC in the future and if I ever do the SCHP will be the first agency I apply with.

How long is the HP's academy? I know in the rest of the state it's only 9 weeks. I wonder how they get away with so little training? It's 26 weeks here.

Well I love my job. Im a police officer, not a state trooper though. I dont know any SC troopers, but the ones in NC really like it. If you like to work by yourself, and do your own thing, then you will enjoy being a state trooper. I really like to work traffic. When the other officers are hanging out at the 24hr gas station or whatever, Im usually on the road looking for something to stop. Thats one of the problems being a city officer and wanting to work traffic enforcement. You can get a call about anything and that ends your traffic stops for an hour or more. I believe I am meant to be a state trooper, personally its fits my desired job description perfectly. Ofcourse working with the city has its perks too. You can work alot of off-duty, so the extra pay is nice.
