I've been researching alot of agency's for Law Enforcment Jobs trying to brain storm.
Out of college at Old Dominion University i'll have a B.S. in National Security and Policy with about a 3.3/3.4 (it's an Individualized Major so no one in my nation besides myself would have it) with a minor in Asian Studies. I'll have 4 years of finance experience at a radio station and several internships in Human Resources as a GS-3 in the govt. I'll be 21, perfect health and no record or speeding tickets. However, chances are i'll have no law enforcment exp. other than an internship for the Inspector General i'm trying to get over the summer.
I was orginally leaning IRS till I looked at the tax test they take. FBI and State Dept were out because of age requirments and travel. I had looked at Dept of Int. as well as USDA or the OIG. Does anyone know anything about there agents and a chance I could get that job?

How do you figure you will be the only one "in your nation to have this degree"??? Are not from the US? And if not, I know plenty of individuals that have gotten a BS in National Security. For one, I do not even know of any Minors in Asian Studies at Old Dom. nor any studies in National Security neither...explain if you can vouch differently.
And usually an Internship is a "non-paid" position, so I am not sure where you got this GS-3 in Human Resources...which agency for the "govt"?
Now you say you have researched Law Enforcement. Do you want to work as a Agent (1811) Series or be a Police Officer, A Sheriff's Deputy, etc..?

It's an Indivualized Interdisplinary Studies major. No one else has it because I designed it myself. I went through all of the course book to design the major just like the school would, I bring it before a council to have it approved and then it is MY major. No one can use the same plan as myself.
That is how it's my major. We also do have an an entire asian studies dept with a major as well as a minor in it. I'm not sure how new or old it is.
An internship is not usually unpaid eithe, it's literally a toss-up by where you're applying for it at. Everyone I've had to has been a paid internship. It's through the Dept of Navy, go to there Human Resources site and they have tons of paid internships-- I'm almost sure all of them are actully. I do know some agencies do non-paid ones but all the ones I've ever seen and gone through for the Navy as well as private have been paid.
I am looking for a 1811 career.
That make any sense at all or not?

Not really because Interdisciplinary Studies is for teachers, but hey if you say so, but a Degree in National Security, you are not "the only one" with it...numerous colleges offer a degree in National Security now. The minor in Asian studies, are you sure you don't mean Japanese studies? I am still not seeing any major or minor in Asian Studies.
As far as an 1811 job goes. I think you may be too young and are lacking in the work experience. Yes you may have a degree, but you will need some job experience in your background. Still apply, but beware that several other applicants will either have previous LE backgrounds or Military.

no its not for teachers. thats one aspect of it. People do IIS majors when they have a solid idea what they want to do but the school does not offer it. I know a girl who wants to be a political journalist so she is doing an IIS major where she takes both journalism and PoliSci classes and creates her own major.
You're right i'm not the only National Sec. major-- I'm the only one with my particlar course work in it.
you do it for alot of other things. We have a japense studies degree as well as an asian studies
let me send you links...

I figured the experience would be what kills me-- Do you know any ways I can get experience while still being in school? I've had problems finding a good way to get my foot in the door. I took the Dept. Of Navy jobs in hopes the GS experience would count for atleast something for being a prior government worker. Any good ideas though?

Gotcha...much clearer now. When I went to school it was specifically for students wanting to get into Teaching.
The GS experience will only get you in the "system" as far as a Govt. job. But Experience in the field of LE or Investigations will help you. You should try for an internship in the FBI, that way when you are near the age of 23m you can apply. There are many other Federal Agencies out there that you can apply to an Internship as well. Look at Law Offices, States Attorney's, etc. There are plenty of them out there around the NOVA area.
Good luck.

Good luck. I am sure you will enjoy it. Just don't go be an "aide" to any congressman, etc...lol.

I looked at it. It seemed pretty middle of the lane. Can you give me any idea what the day to day workings of that would be like?
When I read about they give you the jist but I wanted to discover what i'd be doing day to day or week to week not just my overall goal.
Thanks.
