I stated in the intro post that I am on the waiting list for Illinois DOC and on the third step for employment with county corrections. Law of the land for corrections is there are lots of vacant spots open with all the OT you can stand and with my wife I'll galdy accept. My question is what are the pros and cons at each level. I do know there are variables at each place that possible could not be addressed with out specific question from myself so what ever you could throw out there will be appreciated. Also kinda off topic, but most of us are nervous the first few days at a new career or department so what advice do you have for a possible green horn?
Thanks and have great day!

Hey, I can't compare because I have never worked at the State level. I chose County because not only do I make alot more, but it is WAY closer to my home. I can't stand commutes.

As for advise, pay attention to what your Training Officer has to say. We have the "boot" train with multiple Training Officers. You will develop your own style of doing things in time, until then, do what they say.

Good Luck!

I worked for both the Idoc and cook county and there really ain't much of a difference except the age hire criteria and the off duty carry. The Idoc does have better control of their prisons and the county is out of wack because of their staff shortage. They both have good experienced staff that are gonna guide you just be careful who you talk to and "NEVER" I mean "NEVER" trust a convict pre-trial or hold over. All you gotta do is watch and learn and you will see. good luck..... ;)

In FL county pays better, does less work and you get as much OT as your heart desires.

State has a better retirement plan and I believe better benefits.
