Two nights ago a arrestee was brought into our facility from a leo. Inmate had a loaded 38 in his boot. The gun was found by search room officer no one was hurt. The media is all over this on the news. Thank god no one was hurt. It could have gotten ugly since we just carry oc.

Yep- you got to always be careful. Never take anything for granted. There are a few street officers that do sloppy patdowns (I started out in a jail, and so I know how sloppy they can be). Usually you'll find more drugs, but sometimes you find much worse.

Yea its was a rookie officer that found the gun.I worked the search room for about four years found alot of drugs, razors, knife's,and a few syringes in about every place you can imagine.

Hi One of many,
I hope the Rookie has a positive feedback in their file for that one.

Bloodhound Yea he will be taken care of but i imagine he still little on edge. But this will definately wake up some of the older officers to pay more attention on what coming into the facility.

Hi One of many,
I am glad that he is going to be taken care of.I am sure that he will be on edge for awhile. That should not only wake up the older ones, but also the agencies that transported the person to the facility.

We search in a secure area prior to anyone even coming through the facility doors. They are searched again as soon as they enter the facility.

Don't they search people prior to securing them in their vehicles?
Are they searched prior to entering a police station also?

Their officers stated arrestee was searched twice before we received him at our facility. They must not have checked his boots? It has turned in to a big investigation by our people an theirs. When arrestee enters our facility he is taken to the search room by our officer and the arresting ofc. Where we search him, then arrestee is taken to see the magistrate. The 38 was found in our searchroom.

They released that to the media? Would have never/has never happened here. The officer would catch heck from the jail folks, likely a little talk from the Sgt, and that would be about it.

Strip Out Of course? Every offender that comes through our RDU for the state are taken out of our holding cell escorted to a shower stripped out clothes taken away given their "REDS" red jump suites with a white shirt, socks, and shoes and then they get to go to another holding cell before their 1 - 3 month temp. home.

Every inmate, be it an inmate returning from court or arrested on the street, they are searched prior to entry into the secure portion of the facility.
We do the searches while the inmate is still restrained and still in custody of LE.

Most of the time LE does a great job of searching. Occasionally you will have LE bring someone in and LE states, "I wasn't able to do a good pat down", which usually means, "I didn't bother to pat him down"

At my old prison this policy wasn't in place. We didn't search the inmate until they were in our search room. Low and behold we pat searched an inmate one night........he had a loaded 9mm in his waistband behind his back!!!! You should have seen the look on the LE's face when the loaded gun was handed to him!!

A couple years later I transferred to a new prison in the same state, I made sure we had clear and consise search procedures in place before we opened!!

I have never witnessed a gun being in our facility. But I have found knifes, and drugs on persons coming in. A couple of years back I was told that an officer brought an prisoner in and sit his loaded gun on the booking counter.... needless to say our Capt. had a few words to say with the officer.

One night I conducted a patdown, and found nothing. Needless to say the old boy had on about three pairs of pants. When another C/O came in and conducted a S/S on him they found a knife in his underwear which he was concealing. He was charged and said that he thought he would be able to keep it, it was under 3inches.... yea right.

So I have learned if they have on a crap load of clothing get if off ASAP You never know what they might be hiding in all of that.

Hey bloodhound,

Yes, that is when we changed local policy. The state of Vermont still has not changed theirs!! ugh!!!! We both had to institute a local procedure as the state did not.

This will be taken care of shortly(I hope), as the state goes to get ACA accreditted.

PS, let me know when you want to get "banged", lol

About seven years ago, we had a staff member leave their personal weapon in a state vehicle and "forgot" all about it. The Motor Pool Sergeant will never forget it, an inmate who was cleaning out the car brought it to him (loaded).
