Hi Everyone,
The NYPD Central Park Precinct is looking to recruit new Auxiliary Police Officers. For those who are not aware of what Auxiliary Police Officers (APOs) are, they are civic minded citizens who volunteer their to the Police Department (of NYC) to act as their eyes and ears. APOs don virtually the same uniform as regular officers, conduct patrols in cars (RMP), bicycles (in the warmer months) and by foot.
For those interested, we do require a once a week commitment (one evening or one day on the weekend).
For more information and to apply please follow the link below, and please don't forget to TELL YOUR FRIENDS and FAMILY who may be interested.
All the best and stay safe.

is this an armed position? if not who in their right mind would put on a NYPD uniform without a gun?

Auxiliary Police Officers are not armed with firearms.
I believe they are allowed to carry or are issued OC Spray and Batons

no guns. Just nightsticks, hand cuffs, and the most important weapon of all, the radio (same radio/frequency as regular cops so we do have to go through "central"). They're usually responding before you're finish transmitting. Some of us do wear bullet proof vests if bullets are your concern.
As for uniform without the gun, you don't need the gun. Central Park is the safest precinct in the NYPD. No Auxiliary has been injured in the Park since 1975. (those were different times and it would have been dumb to be a APO back then).
Also, the environment of the park is different from what you would expect. At night there are females, in their full business suit attires who traverse the park in order to get home. Although these girls may look good, as I have experienced they are not the type to talk to, they do have attitude. There are astronomers (with their giant telescopes), runners, and people who are having picnics. Sometimes there are movie shoots, and special events (concerts) that are not disclosed to the media/public. There are some scalley wags in the park at night, but they are usually interested in pursuing initimate relationships with other same sexed scalley wags. They don't bother anyone.
All in all its a fun activity. Any other questions, I'll be happy to address them.
And please do tell your friends!

While I have not been to New York and will not claim to have any idea as to crime rates I can say that wearing a uniform in any city in this nation can be bad for your health.
Also I believe the last APO injuried in Central Park was also the first killed in the line of duty.
Sergeant David Freed was killed on 08-31-75 after being beaten to death with his nightstick.

Hi Im actually in the Auxiliary program right now. I'm in my 5th week of the class. Iam doing it in the 61 in Brooklyn. I was wondering if after I graduate the class and get my shield. Would it be hard for me to transfer to the Central Park pct. The 61 is a great area but I think its going to be too slow of an area for me.I would like to be in an area where their is alot of work. Also the 61 has something along the lines of 100 APO's, not including the members of the class who will graduate. Let me know how the central park pct is? thanks
:D
