I used to be stationed in gettysburg. What would you like to know? I may be able to answer, or get someone to answer your questions.

That's where I want to work after the US Air Force... My goal is to use my GI Bill to self-certify myself with PA's ACT 120 cert, then apply for Gettysburg (and maybe other small borough PDs).

Littlestown Boro., Hanover Boro, and Northern York Regional are good departments. Most other P.D.'s are very small, not much opportunity. Are you from that area?

I am actually from Maryland but lived in Gettysburg for a year before enlisting, so I am a PA resident. My wife is from Delaware County, but has lived in GBurg before, and lived with me there before I enlisted. We're both big history buffs, and she loves the Civil War. She wants to work for the NPS as an Interpretation Ranger.

I have so many memories of Gettysburg. I was stationed there for 4yrs. Was shot at, stabbed, got into so many scraps, man, what a place for your first station. I learned a lot. Ever see a ghost? You will there.

I'm hoping they hire me when I'm done my time in the service...
For my AMU class on Career Planning, I need to do an email or IM interview with someone not related to me who is in the career field I am planning on entering, would it be alright if I interviewed you for that? I don't need to do this for a couple weeks, but will let you know!

Not a big station for P.S.P., but it's there if you are aggressive enough. Lots of migrant workers, Balt. and D.C. transients, etc... Of course, we are talking late 1980's and early 1990's. Boy do I feel old now. It's a great place to live and work, don't get me wrong, I was/am just a black cloud. My nickname there was Tpr. Death. It's stuck with me. LOL The people from that area are great. :)

AirmanE3, I was talking to a recruiter for the Air Force Reserves about using the GI Bill to pay for Act 120 certification. He told me that the only thing that the military will pay for is education leading to a degree, and since Act 120 training is not a degree the military would not pay for this.

Stop...and do not Pass GO... I won't go into the bashing of a Military Recruiter in here...but your GI Bill can go towards a Police Academy. Whether it's ACT 120 or a simple Academy you are going to through a Police Agency. NYPD is a huge example of an Agency that you can utilize some of your GI Bill while going to the Academy.

Thank you for correcting us on that. I am very glad to hear that. I guess the recruiter was wrong on that one.

AirmanE3, By the way, how do you like working in security forces in the Air Force? What exactly do you do? I was thinking of joining security forces in the Air Guard. I've put those plans on hold since I'm near the end of the cadet selection process for the PSP.

As Irish said....that's bad info.
I used my GI Bill to pay for my academy in Missouri.......
Get with the local VA Rep and they will hook you up.....

Ok, well, the job's not for everyone... at my base we do mostly Security, and not so much LE... the experienced SrA and higher-level NCOs run the LE (with minor exceptions)... the new cats work the gates and overwatches, the Airmen and A1Cs that have been here work mostly Flightline Security Patrols and on our AMC Passenger Ramp. Some of the job sucks, but it largely depends on leadership... plus, our base is running a two-week Phase I and II excersise... which REALLY sucks, 'cause then we can't chill on post. But, its not too hard. I love flight, would never ever want to be Back-office, even if they do work M-F 8-5 with weekends off!
Any other Q's, let me know!
I am dying to find out if I can work for GBurg!

Another thing, PSP is very military-friendly. You do get preference points on the written test for being former military.
About 1/4 to 1/3 of PSP is former military.

I've thought about it, but I don't know if I can handle that military-type stuff again... I dunno, we'll see!
I'll let you know about that AMU thing! Thanks for volunteering your time!

Lol, well, still in the Air Force, now an E-4 (Senior Airman), long finished the Career class (class got revamped, as did the entire school when we got our second accreditation). I am still interested in LE, but since I do not know yet where my next base will be, or where my wife will be stationed with the Army (if she even gets in), I cannot fathom with which department yet.

A lot of the Local Community Colleges that offer ACT 120 do provide you college credits towards your degree if you take the ACT 120 certification. Thats how they get you to use your GI Bill. It's usually around 20 some Criminal Justice Credits.

From what I have been told, PSP and the local PD's in Adams County have somewhat of an acrimonious relationship. The troopers that I talk to tend to take exception to the fact that every little town has their own PD, but they never seem to be on duty when they should be, and PSP gets stuck with the coverage. Some towns, it seems, have people on duty M-F, 9-5, but when the bars let out and all hell breaks loose at 0200 on the weekends, there is nobody around. Makes it tough when you only have one car out on the midnight shift.

I had two or three people in my ACT 120 class that used the MGIB to pay for it. They were pre-service police cadets and had prior active duty military service. They had no problems.

You may be correct about the acrimonious relationship... I worked in Adams County for three years w/a 24/7 Dept. It is very true that some of the Depts in Adams County are not 24/7 and that PSP has to cover these areas when those Depts go off, but that is what the PSP is for in these situations. Many of times PSP will request that the 24/7 Depts respond into these areas because they have 1 or 2 officers working in the entire county and they can't get there quick enough.
Its not that the non 24/7 Depts are not on duty when they should be, they are on duty when they are scheduled to be on duty and off when they are scheduled to be off. PSP is not "stuck with coverage" they are doing their job, if they need more troopers out there they should send more to Adams County. When "All Hell Breaks Loose" (which for the most part, I have no clue what "hell breaking loose" in Adams County is) 99% of the time almost every 24/7 Dept in the County will have officers on scene prior to PSP getting there.
I don't know what your post had to do with the thread creators question anyway...
To the thread creator:
Gburg PD is a decent Dept for what it is... You will work rotating shifts, get your DV runs, accidents and all the other stuff that goes in-between (stray dogs, criminal mischief, public drunks etc.) If your proactive you can find drugs as a patrol officer. Pay is moderate but fine for the cost of living in the area (try York, Dauphin or Cummberland Counties for better pay if your hard pressed to be a cop in South Central PA). If your satisfied with small town life and you're a history buff Gburg might be the place for you.
Good Luck.
