Im a college student, and currently in a reserve PD.

I would LOVE to have a job that is tied into LE, so when I graduate school my resume will look that much better and it definatly beats waiting tables.

I worked a bit in loss prevention before (nothing undercover though) and am currently trying to find a job in that field, but it is pretty rare to find spots open for LP positions.

My question is, what other forms of employment would be available that are somewhat tied to LE and are able to be worked by a college student such as myself? (and i would rather NOT have to get a security license)

Some places have Community Service Officer positions that can be helpful in getting a sworn position.

Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl's are always hiring LP, however, if you truely want a job in LE, I would stay away from this field for now! Try an Internship or CSO somewhere, or any type of Volunteer at a LE agency.

if you want an LP with action, go to home depot, they tackle the crap out of everyone at the door, I know some friends who came from there, they have many funny stories, at my work old navy, we can tackle but only if needed, so we are pretty much hands off, buts its not bad

Oh yeah thats extremely smart to go and tackle every shoplifter! I don't know where you come form with that kind of action, but if you are going to takcle a shoplifter and they have done nothing to allow you to tackle them, then be prepared for them to turn around, sue you, your company and press assault charges against you! Don't believe me? Well I have dealt with many of gung-ho type punks like you thinking you are god almighty chasing Shoplifters! When I worked L/P years ago, no force could be used except to handcuff a shoplifter if the situation dictated itself!

wow, i did not think i would offend you geez, i was just saying if he wanted an LP with some action then those were the compaines. We have a no contact policy and no handcuff policy where i do LP at and i have never tackled a shoplifter nor do i intend to b/c i would lose my job. So before you go off on me and you do not have all your info just ask. I would never ever make a stop (contact or not) unless i was 200% sure they had something, risking my job for $20 is a no, but when someone is trying to push out a shopping cart full of $700.00 of unpaid merchandise they may not respond to "excuse me, can you come back to the office with me". like i said i have never tackled anyone, i approach with respect and hope the same in return. So before you go off calling me a young punk kid ask for the facts first.

Hey man,
Another thought would be a hospital security/investigator. On a daily basis, I

I know you dont wat to get a security license but thats pretty much a good way to go. I worked for CIS World Services in high risk properties over by USF. We carried all the same equiptment as I did as a LEO aside from a Taser. We worked very closely with the HCSO and TPD. Now if your not wanting to get into security I know TPD and Clearwater Pd are looking for community officers. It helps them out as far as accident reports, and other things non Sworn related. look into either those may be your best chances aside from that corrections is the only other thing tied to LE. I must also remind you that pay for community officers isnt all that great and generally start at around $9.00 to 10.00 and hour and some even lower. CIS wasnt much better but it paid $10.50 to 10.75 depending what area you work

I would not advise going into loss prevention. It didn't help me at all and I found the job quite boring. I would suggest trying to get an internship with Customs/Secret Service/FBI/DEA or whoever. When I was in FLETC we had several classmates who were interns and had no LE experience. Working in a hospital security department is not a bad idea. I worked for several years at a hospital and we handled everything(Domestics, Assualts, theft, drugs etc..). You mentioned that you were a college student so why not try to get on with the campus police?

Goodluck

GO Bulls!!!! Hey I just graduated USF and am now currently in the H.C.C. Police Academy Class 506. Welcome the the board and all. I was hoping to get hired by HCSO but they now require new hires to have at least 2 years LEO experience, or get sponsored through the academy by them. The rules just changed Feb. 22. so I would have to go back through the academy I am in now to work with the SO here. But try to go with The reserve officer, it's a great way to get your foot in the door.
