Well, I need some information on Aurora PD. My wife wants out of Florida to move to the Denver/Aurora area due to better job advancement for her (and actually me too) and am considering this department.

I am a police officer in Florida with almost four years now. I'm looking for feedback on equipment, morale, and other topics. I know all the information that is on there website, so I know there pay scale, benefits, etc. I'm looking for opinions by other officers in the area or work there. This is a big move, to leave your current department for another, and I am trying to find out as much as possible.
Thanks.

Do a search on Colorado metro depts. There are better lateral moves (and depts) to the Denver-metro area with your experience than Aurora IMHO.

what departments do you suggest?

Jefferson County Sheriffs Office is a good dept. They seem to be keeping up pretty good with new gear and the sheriff is awesome in my opinion. Lakewood is a nice dept. They always were kind of stuck up though. The require a degree no exceptions and they call their officers agents, but they really are a pretty good dept. Well good luck in your search.

Just to let you know brother, I am in the same boat as you. I have already tryed with Denver PD. I am waiting to hear something for their April academy class. They passed me up in January. Hopefully I will get the call in April. If not, I was told I would have to re-apply due to my eligiblility expiring. Some of the departments I was considering, while waiting, was both Jefferson County and Lakewood PD. Good luck.

If you have a degree: Lakewood and Arvada. If not, Westminster, Thornton, Broomfield.

I do have a BA degree and have looked at Jefferson. The only thing bad is that even if I get POST certified, I'd still be considered a rookie since my experience isn't in CO. Kind of hard to swallow with all the other departments offering higher pay for laterals.

I don't think the Aurora PD is a bad place. Never worked for them, but attended the academy with all the Aurora guys as my instructors. Hung around with them for 10 months. They are serious about the training you receive and the commitment you make to them. Even as a lateral you will still have to do a in-house academy, its just shorter than the newbie academy, but still just as military like.

Aurora has had some bad media lately, but what department hasn't at one point in time. Denver PD seems to be bad mouthed constiently and people still apply there.

Aurora is considered one of the best around the metro area, and typically people don't like them because they applied and didn't make the cut.

Good Luck

I dont work for Auroua PD but I did a lot of research before applying for DPD, denver. As a lateral you will still have to go through an academy. It is very strict and hard. They expect the very best from there officers. I had the opp. to be taught by some of there instructors and they are truly the very best at what they do. In Auroua you will be working with a lot of gang activity, riots, child abuse, and the norm. Auroua is becoming more dangerous than Denver. The officers I have meet from APD are top notch. They take great pride in being the best. They support each other and love there training. But I cant say that I have agreed with how they have handled a few things here and there. But thats any department. But I must say if you are clean cut, top notch, and like things in a military setting you will fit in just fine. If you need anyone to talk to in the department talk to Sgt. Young. He is a great guy. Let me know if you want specifics on anything and I will get you the information.

Thanks for answer. It definitely seems like I would enjoy and fit in well at Aurora; the things I don't like at my department are the same things that Aurora is known for and exels at. I guess my only question is how many are they going to be hiring over the next year. Down in Florida, every one is pretty much hiring all the time and there are still vacancies. What is the job market like there?

According to an article in the Denver Post, Aurora PD is hiring 70 officers this year.

"Auroua is becoming more dangerous than Denver".

I don't agree. I know officers from both cities and have never heard an APD cop make the claim that their city is becoming more dangerous than Denver.

According to the CBI in 2004, Denver PD had over 37,000 reported crimes including 87 murders/manslaughters. Aurora had 13 murder/manslaughters with less than 20,000 reported crimes. DPD made around 42,000 arrests that year while APD made a total of around 18,000 arrests.

How is the equipment out there in regards to technology they use and vehicles?

Hmm . . I'm not a big equipt. aficionado, but the simple answer is here's a pic of our cruisers: http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=rc0v34

All cars are supposed to have computers in them and I haven't yet encountered one that doesn't, but I hear some of the PAR guys take their computers out of their cars. Most of our cars just got new computers and it seems the system works pretty well.

I'm not sure who designed our programs but I can tell you that the icons are named "PMDC," "MDT," and "MRE". PMDC is the Dispatch program and also where we check CCIC and NCIC. MDT is our city's records system, so we can view a history of contacts for a person or place in our city. MRE is our report writing program.

Radios are MA\Com and seem to work sufficiently, based on what I hear about the competition, we have had a lot of problems with them, though, just since I've been on.

If I'm not telling you what you're wanting to know, you'll have to dumb it down for me. :)

Your reply was fine...thank you for the time. I'm pretty sure you guys don't have take home cars....any possibility that is ever going to happen in the future?

COBodhi

Tears are streaming down my face as I laugh hysterically.

:) Sorry. Just kidding. No, only the mucky-mucks get take-homes and that will prob. not last much longer as our new Chief drives his own car. We have a pretty major shortage of cars as it is. Just barely at the staffing requirements for the city, a lot of shifts have several two "man" cars.

I could see them maybe giving take-homes to on-call detectives or something over the mucky-mucks, but I don't see patrol officers ever getting them.

What do you guys carry as a sidearm? Im sendin in my app this weekend, and hopefully gettin the hell out of Georgia!

I would love to work for Denver or Aurora, but I just hate the fact that they are civil service...

Hows the cost of living up there now? I lived in Lakewood back in 98-02 and it was pretty damn reasonable, but im sure thats changed now...

Delta Bravo, let me know how your app process goes. I'm thinking about putting one in soon, hoping to make the May academy. I was also looking at Denver, but one of my buddies applied and they told him no because they needed more minorities. Just food for thought. Anyhow, good luck.

I will definatly keep ya in the loop. I too heard that about DPD, so we'll see what happens. Hopefully I will make that next class in '07 as well. I'll be overnightin my app in on monday morning, and the female I spoke with over there, said its ussually been taking 4-6 months on avg to process everything and get hired on...

Did the recruiter tell you anything special about being an out of state applicant because I'm going to be sending my app in from DC. Maybe luck will flow in our direction and we'll end up in the academy together, who knows. Take care.

Well, if u hate Civil Service, stand by. There are 4 ballot issues in November to get rid of it. Not something that I or the majority of officers I know are happy about, but to each his/her own.
And if THAT happens, you can bet we won't be hiring many white males for a long time (I'm a female, so I'm not saying that on my own behalf).
Good luck to u both!

I can tell u that morale is not good right now, but it was GREAT when I applied. So, by the time u start wherever u start, we may be on an upswing again. lol

Oh, and we buy our own sidearms. There's a list of options. Most of us carry Glocks, a few Sigs. I'm not a gun afficionado, so I don't know all of the list. If you have a specific model you're wondering about, I can check on that for u.

Robert,
They told me, since Im an out of state person, I'll just have to fly in there 1 time, for a total of 4 days. I was told they can wrap it all up into those 4 days, and if hired, the next time I would have to fly to Denver would be for the academy. (27 MAY 07) Which they plan on filling 40 seats for that class, and will give you about 4 weeks notice. I dont know if I can swing that, due to how long it takes to move, and to sell a house, ect...
Im tryin to find out, if I do get hired on, if I may be skiped over, until the next class starts????

Good luck

DB, Thanks for that info, it is very helpful. I'm going to give the recruiter a call as soon as I can. I just hope I can get some leave from my unit to get everything done. Thanks again for the info.

If u get a letter that you're hired, you're in that class. They don't keep a waiting list that I know of. If they have 40 slots, they take the top 40, who all get "you're hired" letters, and the rest have to try again later. Also, you do know about "conditional offer," right?

I was hired in-state and BARELY got 2 weeks notice, so good luck with getting 4. Maybe they have something different set up for that.

I just spoke with the Civil Service Board, and I was told "an
applicant can be held over for the following academy, depending on
extenuating circumstances."
