I'm wondering the same thing. 20 is an impressive rank. Unless they rate it like Onondaga County does. I got a 90 one year and was number 4. I find that very hard to believe.

I got a 70 but am 814. Out of thousands of people who took the exam, how can I score a 70 and still be 814??!! Do you think that many people failed?

I'm not sure how many peolpe took the test for the park police. Probably at least a couple thousand. Keep in mind that all the people that took the test with you may not have necessarily have been taking the park police exam. That test was also being used for SUNY PD and some towns and villages. However I'm sure many people did fail as I found it to be the most challanging exam I've taken yet.

I talked to PP recruiter before and he got hired with a 70. I also know a guy that got hired with a 80. I think PP is a great deal you can transfer to a municipal agency unlike University Police.

Why can't SUNY police do a lateral? Are they just considered peace officers?

It's some civil service law that was enacted because too many people were becoming UPD officers simply to transfer to other agencies.

This is not true. A guy who was in my academy with me went to a SUNY school...and after his probation 1year, he transferred to a local pd. From what I hear, it's not uncommon for a department to take you. This was in september of 04...but he didnt' transfer till sep of 05, so it happens. As long as the academy is the same and the departments accept it, it's fine and civil service has nothing to say about it...I've met 2 or 3 guys who were from SUNY Fredonia who transferred to Monroe count sheriff's office, and one of these guys then went to Cheektowaga police...it happens. As long as your state certified, there's nothing they can do..

It must just be the downstate ones then. My old boss used to be a UPD cop on Long Island (Stony Brook) and under no circumstances could you lateral to another department, they were losing too many to the Suffolk and Nassau PDs. You could take the test and whatever department you're looking at could accept your state academy, but it's not a lateral in the way most people think of it - you still have to take the test and be selected.
Like I just said, this might only be for the downstate region. SUNY is divided into 2 regions - upstate and downstate.

Congrats on your score. Thats impressive. I just talked to a detective from Stony Brook. He said they are really desperate for cops. There is not much going on at SBU though, so if your looking to be active you may be disappointed. Keep me posted if you hear anything from State Parks.

Are they going to assign any more State Parks PD officers to LI?
While they are at it we could also use more troopers, we have litterly no police presence on the state parkways here.

NYS University Police Officers as of 1999 graduated from Police academies with Police certificates. NYS University Police Officers currently are not able transfer/lateral to another agency. :mad: But if the officer is on the list for that agency they do not have to attend another police academy. This will soon change SUNY is sponsoring a bill to put UPD officers into the Police and Fire retirement and also add UPD officers to the civil service law allowing UPD officers to lateral to another agency.

It's in Albany at the NYSP academy on the 1st and 2nd..they are splitting up the days for people. The academy is yet to be determined, they were either doing it at the NYSP academy or Geneseo, they haven't decided yet. The canvas letter, once sent back, they will then send you a background packet that you have to bring with you when you go for your PAT. If you pass the Agility, then you meet with your background investigator. They will then ask you to come back the next day for more paperwork, then you go home and wait. This is what one of the head recruiters told me, he knows my captain. Good luck to all and start your running.

My buddy worked for the state parks police and he went to the academy in Oswego and said that's where they've always done it. Why are they moving?

The Park Police no longer uses the academy in Oswego because SUNY did not let ENCON renew their contract to use the building. This years academy that started November 7th and graduates May 5th is at the NYSP academy in Albany. Rumor has the academy going to the NYS Fire academy in Montour Falls, NY, but nothing is final.

April 2 for the PAT. Then April 3 for the psych
I ordered copies of the eligiible Lists for Park Police and SUNY Downstate Police.
Here are the stats
Park Police
Statewide
- 970 people passed (got a 70 or higher)
if you score a 100= rank 1
95 = rank 3
90 = rank 20
85 = rank 165
80 = rank 385
75 = rank 611
70 = rank 814
SUNY University Police Downstate
Downstate area 7-13
- 378 people passed (70 or higher)
if you score a 100 = rank 1
95 = rank 2
90 = rank 7
85 = rank 48
80 = rank 123
75 = rank 221
70 = rank 310
I hope that helps a little

Curious where you guys signed up for the NYSPP and SUNY poilce tests? I'm sure there wont be another one for quite a while yet, but the NY State Park website lists nothing at all about the park police, and its hard to find info on the SUNY tests as well.
Is it all done through the NYS Department of Civil Service?
Thanks!
Yes, Its all done through NYS Civil Service.
I called up Park Police to tell them I won't be attending the Agility on April 1.
The woman on the phone said that IF they have another Academy class in early 2007, I would have to take the written over again, to be considered for the next class. I don't know why that is, considering there are over 900 people on the list for this test. Maybe there was a misunderstanding, I don't know.
anyway, from what she said, they might give a test in December.

I just have one question, do you do the situp's, pushup's or run first. And what if you fail either, are you out for good??? I heard that some people miss the time by a little bit and they still passed. Example, my one buddy was up there with a friend who ran it 25 seconds slower than he should have and they paseed 3 of them...is this true for the ones who have did this.???

According to DCJS, the sit-ups are first, followed by the push-ups, then the run. This is the way the test should be administered. Keep in mind that NYSP tends to do their own thing, also I've never taken the NYSP test so I'm not drawing from personal experience here. I'm only stating the way the test should be administered.

Currently the starting pay for the NYSPP is $32,803, but with binding arbitration settled, the pay will be going up very soon. No details have been released yet, but they will be out soon.
