Is ISP hiring now?

Affirmative. They have a pre-application on the career section of their website. The next couple of rounds will be for lateral officers for a 12-week cross over academy.

With the ISP application deadline looming (3-22), anyone heard about how many lateral applications they've gotten so far? I've heard a number myself, just wondering if it's close to what anyone else has heard. ;)

what did you hear? I have not heard anything

You apply for the full 23-week academy or the lateral 12-week academy candog? I haven't heard ANYTHING about the full academy as they probably won't be doing one for awhile.

All I Know Is 1 Officer From Our Department Is Going Along With 2 Other Officers In The County. They Were Kind Of Wondering How Many People Were Actually Going To Show Up. I Guess They Were Just Notified Yesterday. Just A Little Info.

Yeah, I've been wondering the same thing since I got my e-mail from them on Thursday. This process is going to be moving right along considering the academy starts in August. The word that I was given by a couple Troop buddies of mine is this, for anyone that is in the process:

As of the close of business on 3-22, from the time they first posted that "pre-application" on-line until that deadline, they received a little over 1,000 applications, from 27 different states. Of that 1,000, they were told that approximately 305 or so applied to the lateral academy and they were hoping to get 50 officers out of that. From what they said, this is the first time ISP has had 1,000 applications for a process since 1995.

Keeping my fingers crossed on this one guys and gals. I've lived with having an injury and bowing out of the 64th class for almost 2 years and am hoping to make it back. Good luck to all of us pursuing this choice. ;)

You apply for the full 23-week academy or the lateral 12-week academy candog? I haven't heard ANYTHING about the full academy as they probably won't be doing one for awhile.

I applied for the traditional academy 4 weeks ago and was under the impression that they were going to do both this year so I emailed earlier this week after finding this site and reading the posts and the ISP advised that they are currently preparing for a traditional academy. They didn't elaborate and further though.

A couple questions, I am 26 w/o any LE background but do have an associates degree and will have my Bachelors (Business) this August, will that be a big help even though they dropped the college requirement?

Now for the one that concerns me: How important is size? I am fairly small, just 5'8" and weigh less than 150lb  I have recently started working out trying to build mass before any possible interview because I am concerned I'll be weeded out on the spot once they see how small I am. Other than size, I am in excellent shape and can pass all of the physical agility test requirements the ISP has listed on their website.

I spoke with a trooper in the past and he told me not to worry about size because once you get through the academy, your training will take care of you. He is actually the same height as I am, but is much bulkier. Any truth to that??

One last one....I do not have a problem being stationed away from home should I even get hired. However, my wife is not big on that particular possibility, but is supportive of my career change other than that. If you are moved, how soon can you transfer closer to home and what factors, if any, do they consider when deciding who goes where. I am married, have a child and bought our home 2 years ago....does the ISP take those factors into consideration??

I appreciate any comments or thoughts. I love this site, wish I would have found it sooner! :)

I don't think you have much to worry about.
I applied for the traditional academy, too.
It will probably be atleast this fall from what I have heard though, for testing.
I can answer a few of your other questions as well. Or atleast give you my personal opinion :D

I am in my early 20's and 5'11" 175 lbs. (skinny) I believe I have increased in muscle size over the last few years just from working at my job and working out whenever I can. I still am not a "big guy" though. You and I have to accept that we will be around the size we are for the rest of our life unless we do something stupid like, take steroids, or go on a rediculous diet along with working out 5 times a week.
(That's just not gonna happen) My point is..don't worry about what your size, I know that alot of strength needed in LE is mental!

Now as for your college degrees, I remember an ISP trooper talking about how they dropped the requirement, but still would prefer a applicant with atleast an associates. I respect people a great deal with degrees, but I am one of those guys with "street smarts" and no college. It depends on who you ask, I have a friend who is a highschool graduate (no college) and a Sargeant with a small department and he performs his duties just as well, if not better than someone who went to college. Alot of people will tell you degrees are good to have "just in case" ....you never know what could happen during your career, you may need that Bachelors degree to fall back on. Others will tell you, "If you're a good enough cop, you don't need college".

I really hope that I am the second quote!

Hey, Good luck with the hiring process. Oh, and before I forget...I relate to you about your wife. Mine is definetly not big on moving, especially moving far away from her parents, but to answer your question. Sgt. McElfresh advised that after the completion of your probationary year, you can put in for your transfer to the post you would like to work at. I know that some parts of Indiana are in major need of troopers over other parts. So expect to move! Once again, good luck, maybe I'll see you at the testing.

Hey guys,

I don't believe size matters a whole lot. Although I have heard that there were study's done that said tall and muscular men were were like some 58% or crap more successfull than short men. Who knows I definitely wouldn't worry about it just don't go to the interview with small mans complex, lol

As far as gaining size it is possible I went from 170 to 225 in about a year and a half just working out no more than 4 hrs a week and eating right, most of the time I only worked out twice a week for an hour. Yes it's totally legal.

I hope they start the traditional soon. My wife is all for it. they only thing I don't like is the 11k a year pay cut, but $ not everything.

good luck to both of you, hope to see you at a test soon

Candog,
That is impressive, and gives me hope LoL.
My goal is 215 lbs by then end of '06, and I also read that study LoL.
Hope to see you at the testing.

SW,

The below info is partially pasted (obtained) from the ISP site:

1) Submission of completed Preliminary Application Form
2) Written Test (Excluding the Lateral Academy )
3) Physical Ability Testing
4) Oral Interview
5) Polygraph/Psychological Tests
6) Background Investigation
7) Fitness Examination/Psychological Evaluation
8) Superintendent's Review

The expected duration of the selection process will be approximately five months for the Lateral Academy and approximately seven months for a Traditional Academy .

Any applicant who competes in a selection process for a position as a sworn officer and is unsuccessful in achieving hiring status, shall not be excluded from competing in any subsequent selection processes. :D

IrishMP1: I emailed ISP last week asking the same thing and the response that I got was "We are in the process of conducting a lateral class but are preparing for a traditional class.."

I know that doesn't help much. The trooper that I talked to a month or so ago told me that it could very well be 1 or even 2 years before I hear anything due to the lateral. But he did tell me to track him down once they did and he would give me some advice and other tips.

Good Luck!

Yeah, the word from a trooper buddy of mine is that if the lateral process goes well, there may not be a traditional academy for up to two years and by that time, they're thinking they may be able to fill all the open positions with those laterals. Just info I've been given. Who all was at the lateral agility test this past Saturday??

I'm really kicking myself in the butt for not doing this 4-5 years ago like I had intended. It looks like I'll never even have an opportunity unless I join a local PD for at least 3 years.
