Here in the carreer section it states that SCPD is going to give the test in 2007, but I can't seem to find the application for it. Does anyone out there have any idea?

You won't be able to submit it until the exam is announced, though. If they are having a test in 2007, the exam will be announced some time in September or October of 2007.

HA, good luck. I took the test a few years ago. I have NEVER scored less than a 90 on ANY police test. PLUS I at the time had about 8 years experience. MY SCORE- 80... I was well over 6000 on the list. Of course if you fit the mold of what they want then good luck. SOmeone has to get hired.... Just not an old guy like me.. :(
Oh yeah,I do know someone of high importance there and that didnt help.

I took the test in May 2003 and got a 90. I have yet to hear anything about being called back. Although they do want to hire a lot more cops by 2008 because of increase in population in suffolk. Also when you take the test they ask you if you want to be considered for all the towns out east so that increases your chances of getting hired and for all that money as well. Good luck

It's not like their test is any harder, it's the same as every other municipal test in the state. Why did you only get an 80?

Did you take the test?? It was more or less a evaluation of your personal attributes and personality. I couldnt think of a better way to say it. That way they can SCORE you the way THEY WANT. THAT is fact. There was NOTHING on the test that had anything to do with police work or general knowledge like every other test Ive taken. It was kinda like a psychological test and they get a feel for your personality. There are no WRONG OR RIGHT answers. I hope that explained it. Every other test Ive taken was 100 or so questions, multiple parts, maybe a memorization section like NYPD, which I scored in 1993 a 98.8, Pittsburgh I scored a 94 in 1993. Local tests in the PIttsburgh area, I scored 96 on one and a 94 on the other. Anne Arundel MD I passed and on the oral boards I scored a 99. Local PD here on oral I scored a 98. The job I work at now, oral I scored a 98.
Please dont think this was bagging rights here, just an explanation of my thoughts on SUFFOLK. Theres a reason its acalled SUFF@#K county  cause they FU#$ you at the drive through..... ;)

Sounds like you took a psych test. You didn't take the civil service test because that's the same state-wide with the exception of NYPD and NYSP.

It was a psych or personality test but that was the standard entrance test for Suffolk PD. I guess there is a state wide Civil service test that is giving but that wasnt it. I took it I guess 2 or 3 yrs ago and they set tons of people up at local High schools, I took it in Babylon H.S.
Its not in the cards for me, oh well.

I'm not sure what you took, but it was not the civil service exam.

I also took the May 2003 test, and I agree with e-man. There were definitely a lot of questions that had nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with personality and experience. It wasn't the NY civil service test that is given for other counties. Suffolk has developed its own test for entry level purposes.

My apologies then. I was assuming that the test was the same there as it is throughout the rest of the state. I don't know how they got away with administering a different test.

What makes Suffolk cops deserve that much for doing nothing when compared to the dangers a NYC cop faces

It comes down to cost of living, so the question you should be asking is why DON'T NYPD cops deserve the same or better?

Top pay for NYPD is aboutr 60K plus tons of OT.
Top pay for Suffolk is about 100K  Yep a hundred grand a year for suburban type policing. Its the same all over though. My last job was in the city{ghetto to be exact} and my top pay was 52K, now Iam in a subrurban department, bored as he!! and will top out over 65K.
Wish I could move back home, hundred plus grand a year, I could do ok on that... :(

Yep, your suburban departments always make the $$ compared to the cities they surround.

Don't forget that suburban departments always have fully loaded SUV's for patrol, new radios, SWAT gear, computers, assault weapons, K-9's, etc. Meanwhile the city cops who really need that stuff have 20 year old cars, typewriters and crappy radios.

They ALWAYS have those things? There's not a single suburban department in my area with SUVs, SWAT gear or assault weapons.

Allright, I was exaggerating a little. My point was that the departments that don't need it usually have better equipment than big city departments. And yes, in NJ there are departments with less than 20 officers that have Expeditions, SWAT gear, assault weapons and sniper rifles.

You dont work for my department do you?? ;) We have 2 Ford Expeditions, all cars have guages, MDTs, actual snow tires in winter, WE even get half the fleet new EVERY YEAR. The Ford Exp.s have AR-15s, all cars have extra ammo, slim jims, stuff. My old department had MDTs years ago but the server went bankrupt so they still dont have em, oinly certain people can carry a shotgun, cars are falling apart, the wagons are rear wheel drive and the hills out here are killer. We dont have K-9 but the old place had a good size unit. No snipers here but we can call the county team if we need.
More money, less work- AInt life grand

Hey guys. I've been a member of this forum for quite some time but rarely post as I've been moving around and extremely busy( I've got a baby boy coming April 1st). I'm back in NY for good and living out on the Island (Suffolk). I've always been interested in working for SCPD (pay's a major factor aside from living a life long dream). My fiance's cousin's been on the force out here for afew years now and said the exam wasn't all that difficult. That and they're looking to hire alot more "minority" officers. So, I'm guessing that's a plus for me.
I've just been reading this thread and I'm just hoping I fit their criteria. Great info. here. Keep it up, guys. And goodluck to anyone else going for this. Stay safe out there.

SCPD cant hire anyone until the Sheriff's Office rehires the 20 deputies that that the old sheriff fired.
Besides, SCPD is still hiring from the 1996 list lol. Just apply for deputy sheriff its the same job but countywide and the usual sheriff work like civil process, courts, etc (SCPD only patrols the western part of Suffolk County; Sheriff does whole county with emphasis on the rural eastern part) with take home cars and they hire alot: http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/webtemp3.cfm?dept=36&id=1941

Yea, I've read and heard they're not hiring anyone till they hire 20 deputies but I'm not interested in that position. I'm sure they'll get filled quickly. But I've got plenty of great references already on the job in Suffolk and have been told I'd make the cut... hopefully. I'll see how it turns out. Again, thanks for all the info. guys ( and gals?).
