Hey ya'll. I will be leaving the wonderful world of MD policing for a fed. job shortly. I want to get my CCW while I'm still an officer but don't know the specific wording MD State Police will be looking for. I printed off the app. and reviewed it and it seems they're looking for documentation of an actual threat since I don't fall into one of the 'special' categories (special police, armed security, doctor, psychologist, pharmacist, business owner, etc.). Can I just make reference to the job?

Ug. Why is it so complicated here in MD.....in PA all you need is a damn license and $25.

Has anyone here applied for one or know another officer who has who they can put me into contact with? I'm also waiting to hear from an officer in Balt. City who hooks up his officers but I may be waiting a while.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Maryland is notoriously bad in issuing CCW permits. They loathe issuing them and the process is very slow from what I have seen.

Just become a convicted felon and buy a pistol on the street. Pat Jessamy will see to it that you only get a PBJ and fine. :D

very simple...... it's not going to happen.

You can check out packing.org for the laws for CCW in every state. MD is impossible to get a CCW. Check out marylandshallissue.org

What about getting a permit for a correctional officer? Would that be next to impossible?

Yes, unless you have well documented threats on your life or have been attacked previously.

I know of alot of correctional officers who get permits. Its a given that your going to be threatened. They just print two copies of every report they make in reference to a threat then forward it with the application to MSP. Not sure how many get turned down but thats hwo the COs that got them told me they did it. I think they deserve to carry. I know I would hate to run into a guy I spent 6 months with as a CO being the person he hated the most only to run into him at the grocery store with my daughter and not be prepared for him to extract some sort of revenge.

Well, you have pretty much two options to obtain a ccw in Maryland

1. Sense you're a Maryland PI your employer can sponsor your permit. You might want to have a chat with your employer.

2. If you have written documentation (Police reports) of threats against your life, you can apply and sponsor yourself. HOWEVER, it's not easy.

Good Luck!

I know officers who have retired and have no problem getting a CCW in Maryland...Even though you are not retiring (that I know of) but leaving, you may want to explore that option with MSP. I dont know if former officers carry the same status as retired officers.

Dumb question, but are you allowed to carry off duty even as a LEO without a CCW permit? sorry for wasting time and space, lol :)

ANY police officer who works for a government agency doesnt need a CCW to carry anywhere in the United States. (Planes and Federal instalations being the exception).
