Nice, there are a few of us on here not bad at all. It's cold up here now though so I wouldn't say everything is good =/

Quick question for all you fellas/ladies on here in the MASS forum. I see alot of you were from here but since have moved, i'm not trying to be noisy or anything but is it because MASS has limited law enfrocement opportunites?
One of my good friends just move to Florida where he is going to apply for the sheriffs department out there, he told me he does not miss it at all because there is to many limitations out here for individuals who wish to pursue a future with law enforcement. Personally I have 10 months to go for my "prefrence" as a Police Cadet. I was just wondering if any of you miss it or is there more else where.
Thanks

Yep, that was my primary reason: Limited L.E. opportunities in MA. I grew up in a small town in MA, but moved to California in 1977, when it became clear to me that without resident status and with no veteran preference, I had no chance to get hired on any reasonably big PD in MA. And I knew I did not want to work for a small PD in some quiet town, which is where I would have ended up if hired in my town, or if hired by one of the small PD's (whether Civil Service or non-Civil Service) in MA. So after a couple of years as an Aux/Special in my home town, a summer as a Summer Special on the Cape (Dennis), and one year as a Campus Cop in MA, I moved to California, and joined one of the bigger L.E. agencies in Southern California..... been there ever since, going on 29 years now. As far as a L.E. career, it was the best move I ever made. The pay is really good out here. And I have done far more varied things (assignments) during my career with my Dept here in SoCal than I could have done with any PD in MA, let alone any PD that I could likely have been hired by. I have worked Uniformed patrol in gang-infested urban neighborhoods; Detectives, narcotics investigation, both undercover and as a case investigator; supervised a covert surveillance unit; and am now, in the twilight of my career, a helo and fixed wing pilot (and supervisor) at my agency's aviation unit. I don't think there is any agency in MA that I could have done ALL those things at. Bottom line: Career-wise, I am glad I made the move. Sometimes I do still miss my old home (MA), but I visit often; and I sure don't miss the weather! If you are young and adventurous, with no "ties" (i.e., wife, kids, etc) then you might be well advised to look at L.E. opportunites in other parts of the USA that you find geographically attractive.

How much work is there in NH? =/, thats good to hear though that they pay good, I think that MSP gets paid good money think about it where else could yo make 80,000$ and not work any overtime. I recently have taken the NYPD exam, although im hearing about there new contract they state first year rookies make about 41,000$. Congratulations to the both of you and keep up the good work, So california has some bad parts to it as well stay safe.

Growth is still at a fast pace. Everyone including myself moved to N H. Houses are still a bit cheaper. The crime rate has jumped up in 5 years. Makes since. All the problems moved north. Excellent Training academy. Good luck.

No disrespect to anyone who lives in NH. I know they have there crime as well but we just do not hear about it alot, I guess thats why I asked how much crime they really had. I thought the real estate up there would be more then ours down here meaning (southshore area). What academy do you guys go to out there?

We came up hear from Lynn, Ma 18 years ago, the population was approximately 3500. Now its 8000. Building is growing on everywhere.
Real estate is a little cheaper. The property tax has gone up. Population grows, we need new schools. All full time Municipal, State, Fish & Game and Liquor Police officers attend a 12 week boot camp academy in Concord, NH.

I was in the "no ties" catagory a few years ago, and had gotten offers in LAPD, CHP and LV Metro. I went through the whole process, was ready to move, then family commitments kept me in MA.
I never thought I'd make it to the MSP but things worked out well, I'm glad I stayed. No doubt about it, it's the hardest place to get hired. You have a better chance at getting into Harvard. 20,000 people took the MSP exam in 2002 and 2 classes of about 300 total have graduated, 19,700 didn't.
Don't just test at one dept/agency. Take as many tests as possible all around New England and take the first one that takes you.
Good luck.

I'll agree it's tough to get on..right now going on 3 years as a campus cop and 6 mos as a part timer in a non civil service town pd which rocks the only down side is no full time openings for the next 4 to 5 years  ...Only thing keeping me here is that I am finishing up my degree which should be done this Dec Then I'll start looking... hopefully some place warm and more affordable :D

Nice, Good luck to you with your degree and continue to pursue a town/city with a full time employment opening. Sine where in Mass are you located, I know they ship the new guys out a little far after they get out of the academy and there supervising period has ended. I think the next MSP test should be coming up sometime this year.

Lived in on the North Shore all of my 39 years with the exception of my 8 years in the military. I was one of the lucky few that actually fell into the job about 3 weeks after leaving the military, talk about right time and right place. Like everyone said, MA is very tough in obtaining a LE career but never give up. Good luck
