View Full Version : Ironic Traffic Violations

There are two traffic violations that strike me as ironic.
1. For states with bans on talking on cell phones while driving, you have to call in the stop on the radio.
2. For vision obstructions, I've seen some squads with more equipment blocking the view than cars with a pair of fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror: Radar antenna, Radar base unit, video camera, extra lights, etc.
Just observations, not trying to stir something up. Anyone try and argue these with you though? I know way back in training, we were told to stop at least 10 cars for minor violations like these before using it as an excuse to stop 'bangers. That way we could show that we regularly enforced the violations and weren't just profiling them.

1) You try them both and tell me which is more distracting. Talking on a cell phone where you have duplex transmission (ability to talk both at once) while holding the phone to the ear ... versus the police type radio with simplex transmission (you can either talk, or listen, not both at once) while simply keying a mic button when needed on a mic that needs only be raised when talking, where you listen on a speaker. The duplex communications demands much greater attention, the simplex is more like talking to a passenger. Both are distracting, but the degree is much greater with the cell phone. It is, I think, largely why the handset radios fell out of favor with law enforcement.
2) Our law talks about objects suspended within the driver's view ahead that are likely to be moving, as they desenthasize the driver to the visual clues that will maybe alert him to that car approaching from a side road or a child approaching from between two bushes ... the movement. My radar and antenna are close enough to me, even on the dash, that I am looking over them, I can see hood above my radar and antenna so they have no impact whatsoever on my view ahead of the car.
I suppose there are other reasons. These are just my observations.

I guess you think we should get a speeding ticket because we have to break the speeding limit to caught speeders.

Is it ironic..
that in order to arrest a guy for possession of drugs, I have to seize the drugs, thereby possessing them myself?...Mmmm just a little ironic...

Yes, I'm a cop, and like I first posted, I wasn't trying to cause trouble. It was just a couple things I thought were funny. As in humorous, not wrong. Lighten up folks.

We could get trapped the "but you do it" attitude all the time. In our state is a violation to leave a motor vehicle running unattended. Nobody complains though. Mr. John Q. Public ususally understands even though he may not like it.
Wouldn't get caught up in it and I wouldn't worry about comments from someone seemly so easily offended.

Thanks. I've got thick skin (thick-headed maybe too). I just kept picturing Andy Rooney. "Have you ever noticed how..."

We got one over here, that it is illegal to commit U-Turns without a sign permititng you to do so. When we do it in the course of our duty, the public complains, so then you are informed by managment that it looks better if we complete a legal turn rather than an illegal one to catch anyone. Travel a fair distance instead of quickly turning to chase. Even though we are quite protected by law to break road rules in the course of our duty.

What if we charge the offender with actually USING and INHALING the drug?? can we TEST the drug to make sure its not grass or dog poop?? I mean its good enough for the Ex-President, I didnt inhale....... :D

Well, I'll pitch in. TennSix knows the drill here in Indiana too.
Grant money to go out and enforce the seat belt law.... but no helmet laws for bikers. Both harming only the driver/rider, but write the motorist and just wave at the Harley riders with unprotected melons.

I like that disclaimer! Mind if I use it too?

It's about the money. The insurance companies don't loose near the bucks on motorcycle accidents as auto accidents. Now all the yuppies are riding harley's and they lobbied to get the law changed and the insurance companies didn't put up a fight. With the increase in mc accidents in my state over the last two years, I expect to see the helmet law inacted again.
