Hey Guys,

I am a FL Certified Officer going through the process with Ocoee PD in Central Florida.. It seems like they are going through a hard time keeping Officers.. Does anyone have any info (good/bad) to say? Also applying with Orlando and Winter Park.

Thanks for any info/opinions,
Steve

I know some people that work for Ocoee. They like it but like other small agencys in Cental FL, people always leave to the big agencys after working there for about a year or two. All the small agencys in Central FL have somewhat of a turnover rate. Ocoee is a mix city you have a good area and a bad area theres alot of every type of crime. Small agencys are always a good place to get experience cause you have time to work your calls and its not all fast pace you can somewhat take your time learning. Unlike big fast pace agencys its all thrown at you at once.

Winter Park is a good paying small agency with a good reputation but not alot of action and adventure.

Good Luck

Iceman,

Thanks for the info.. I have some experience and moving back to the area.. The process with Orlando PD takes like 8 months.. plus I have the feeling they fully process alot more people than they will hire.. Do you have any other departments that you recommend in the area?

Thanks,
Steve

Ocoee PD from what I understand has a higer turn over rate then many of the other PD's in central Florida. Not sure of the exact reasoning though. You'll also likely find that the turn over rate for depts in Orange county is higher then those in Seminole (just to the north). Overall, the SO's have a higher retention then the PD's, b/c officers will leave to work for the SO, mainly to have a greater jurisdiction and work for a bigger agency. However, also realize that the PD's will pay more and promote faster then the SO's. There will be enough to keep you busy if you work for one of the cities, unlike the county where you simply hump call to call alot of nights.

Ocoee is an ok department. Not a small agency (medium size agency) but they lose alot to agencies such as Orlando and Orange county. The area is pretty nice but they have a very tough management and one of the hardest FTO's within the county.

As fas as size goes, Winter Park is the 3rd largest agency within Orange county and has about 150 officers. They seem to do a mix of traffic and having some decent calls since alot of folks are moving to the area. IMO, I prefer them over Orlando if I were to go back to Orange county.

Lots of good departments in the area, just take a pick when your certified and apply.

Don't feel bad if Winter Park leaves you hanging. They prefer to hire FHP Officers.
